So....I’m ready to start thinking about how to revive this sinking ship, starting in 2020 in hopes of getting our edge back. Below are TWO BIG THINGS this team needs now to be truly competitive again in two simple bullet points:
  • Hire a real head coach with full absolute team authority that all players answer to.
  • Allow that head coach to transform this soft, country club culture into a physically and mentally tough team of players and coaches.
STEPS THAT MUST BE TAKEN
1. Jerry must hire a strong HC (Absolute MUST- All other move’s success depends on this!) A HC who will have full and complete command of the team, the locker room, serve as primary team spokesman, and be in charge of discipline. Basically the way Jimmy and Parcells were. Period. The HC has 5 years to win or another is brought in.

2. The new HC hires his own staff- No one is is to be forced on him by the Jones Cartel. Because the HC will be accountable, he gets to hire his people.

3. An emphasis is placed on making this a tougher culture. Find a coach that will hold players accountable to high standards of performance. Does not require Jerry’s approval to cut someone. This culture is as soft as a baby’s cheeks. Toughness- both physical and mental is needed! This team is one of the softest in the league and the new coach must be able to address that immediately.

4. Draft with a clear philosophy for toughness along with more value added for positions such as S and DT. For too long, this team has undervalued the key positions of Safety and Defensive Tackle. How many times have we passed over big talent at both positions in high rounds putting our hope in 6th round safeties or long range project DT players (like this years #2 draft pick) that aren’t ready to play.
OTHER QUICK POINTS
  • Dak Prescott is not the big problem. We can win with this guy under the right coach and system.
  • Jerry and Stephen need to shut up. Get off the radio shows and stop the post game conferences. Your new head coach needs to speak for all things regarding the on the field matters. If Jerry absolutely must talk, make it about the financial side of things.
  • As a show of good will to our long suffering fans, Jerry should at the very least freeze all ticket and concession prices. If he wants to be even better, cut ticket prices 10% next year to show the fans he appreciates their long support.
I realize Jerry will probably never do any of this. But it’s a sane path to get better. And it’s within his power to do and receive “big credit” when it works.

Do it Jerry!
Will you please send this to Jerry via certified letter!

Just thought of this while reading a response....Cancer. Complete and total cancer, and we will know soon if Jerry finally gets it or not by who he hires....and if we see a coordinator hired first, etc
And get rid of that overpaid O'Quinn. Dallas's Special Teams is a disgrace. Speaking of disgrace, Marinelli, Richard get rid of them ALL.

It's quite possible the coaches dont want to hold someone like 21 accountable when he taps out is that they know it's going to turn into a fiasco, and Jerry will inevitably back the player.

Cancer. Complete and total cancer, and we will know soon if Jerry finally gets it or not by who he hires....and if we see a coordinator hired first, etc
Doctors usually like to go in and cut out cancer. There is a margin to remove also. This organization needs a margin where Jerry is becomes like an ordinary owner and is seen in the box but not heard. He needs to drop the GM act too!

Common sense? Does old jerrah have any of that? 25 years and counting. He did one time during that span BUT that didn't last long.

I understand why people say “Jerry will never do this”. But I say we still need to be vocal as fans about it. Jerry reads the papers and probably has somewhat of an idea about fan temperature. The only thing he fears is losing money and prestige.

We as fans need to keep up the pressure. It’s like that old basketball saying, “You miss 100% of the shots you never take”. If we just sit back and say, “Oh well, there’s nothing we can do”, then nothing will change. If you have tickets to the game Sun, either don’t go or pack a grocery sack to put over your head. Stop buying his damn jerseys and stop showing up at training camp. Jerry cares about image a lot and notices fans.

Good one- don’t disagree. But don’t we as fans provide some of his “limelight” and prestige? I’m amazed when I watch training camp footage at the number of fans that treat Jerry like a Rock Star. You never saw that with Tex Schramm. I don’t understand why so many fans see him as a “star”. Leave him alone. He loves the limelight. So let’s stop giving it to him.

Haze The Jones family making fun of us as fan year after year and they will keep doing it over and over enough is enough with them. The only way out of this is if they relinquish the team's ownership but that is not gonna happened..I don't want to see this family team wining anything period

If you think Jerry and Stephen are ever going to stop talking to the media, you’re dreaming. The other stuff can happen, and I think a lot of it was already in place though Garrett wasn’t good at it.

Regardless, The Jones family will always be sharing their thoughts on their team. They ARE the front office, but I believe they will give the coach control of the team....but he won’t have final say on the groceries. Most teams are not run that way.

Don’t forget Jerry ran the team when we won 3 Super Bowls. Jerry was very active back then and constantly in the media. The only difference was we had a SB QB and RB and WR and a great defense with the right coaching staff. The Jones’s are never going to give up total control of the team or step out of the media. It worked before, and it can work again with the right coaches and players.

If I remember correctly, and it is very possible I don't, Garrett did this when he first took over. I remember Garrett having the team practice in shells and hitting. He brought in his guys and turned the season around (sort of). It was short-lived, though, because Jerry choked away Garrett's authority and control of the team. Now mind you, I am not saying Garrett is a good coach or diverting blame. I am just saying Jerry simply can't help himself. His identity is clearly the Dallas Cowboys because nobody wants to put the 6th best businessman on TV every week.

not really

Garrett has always been about style not substance
He knows what to say and do to give the impression of discipline and hard nosed football but Jerry and players saw through that and this sort of facade is not sustainable

I applaud your hope and optimism even though you acknowledge they aren’t a reality.

I’d suggest steps within the Parameters that will be allowed from Jerry not Pipedreams.

No wonder fans continue to be disappointed anticipating or hoping Jerry to conduct himself differently.

It would be nice if Jerry did all these things, but I don't think he needs to for the Cowboys to be better. I think hiring the right HC to replace Garrett will help immediately. Just imagine a HC who actually schemes for the teams he facing. That should help. Then making the right game decisions, and managing the clock better. That should help too.

The next step is in player selection. Draft winners. Guys who have won at every level of football they have played. These are probably the guys who will light a fire under the other players because these players can't stand losing. Draft players based on their game film, not on the combine numbers or how they look in the gym. Stay away from guys where rumors swirl about injuries or off the field antics. Draft guys who you know will be there every Sunday to help the team. Draft guys will heart.

Then, end this nonsensical strategy of not signing top tier free agents. If the right guy is available, make a big pitch for him. Are the Packers getting their money's worth from the two Smiths? Let's compare:
Age Yrs Total $(MM) Avg $ (MM) Guaranteed $ (MM) Sacks
Z'Adarius Smith 27 4 $66 $16.5 $20 13.5
Preston Smith 27 4 $52 $13 $16 12

D. Lawrence 27 5 $105 $21 $65 5

The Cowboys paid Lawrence almost as much as the Packers paid for both their DEs who each more than doubled Demarcus Lawrence's sack totals. Notice the guaranteed money. It makes no sense to not pay free agents market value if you are going to pay your own free agents more than market value. Fix this strategy and stop overpaying players you drafted as if they are better than the rest of the league because you drafted them! Free agency is an opportunity to add players to the roster to fill big holes. Its like being given 1st round draft picks. But if you overpay guys like Zeke, Jaylon, Tyrone Crawford and Tank Lawrence, it hampers your ability to sign 1st and 2nd tier free agents who are better than the guys you have. And by the way, I recognize that not all free agents perform as well as they get paid. But GMs get paid a lot of money to find the gems, not the losers.

Of course but who really expects that to happen?

You don’t set your expectations based on what you think it should be. You base them on reality, recent history and trends.

Bullet, I gave up on any of that a long time ago. None of that is happening, not one bit of it. Not as long as he's alive and runs the team and I don't think that improves when that lucky sperm moron takes over.

The Dallas Cowboys are all about reward before accomplishment. Nice stadium and facility, big contracts and the softest country club setting in the NFL. At least when DeBartolo did that, it was after they'd earned something as a team.

It is all about accepting what is and will not change. Why should it change? The ratings and revenue are still top notch and the pathetic sports people cover everything this awesome person mutters and his son. Everything is fine in Jonestown, here have a nice tall glass.
