The NFL is wrapping up naming the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team this Friday with the quarterbacks show. Montana and Brady are confirmed as two of the QBs, leaving 8 other slots. The list of finalists include both Staubach and Aikman.

Former Cowboys that have already made the team are Tom Landry, Emmitt Smith, Lance Allworth, Mike Ditka, Forrest Gregg, Larry Allen, Bob Lilly, Randy White and Deion Sanders.

Full list to date is here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Football_League_100th_Anniversary_All-Time_Team

The list has skewed heavily to before 2000 for all the other positions, so I don't expect Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers to bump any of the historic greats off just because they have a lot of yards throwing in domes after 2003.

Roger will make it..Troy will not

That's my guess too.

FWIW here's my guess for who they'll actually pick (not necessarily my favorites.) Just going in rough chronological order. Confirmed players are bold. Players from the 75th anniversary team are in italics.
  1. Tom Brady
  2. Peyton Manning
  3. John Elway
  4. Joe Montana
  5. Roger Staubach
  6. Fran Tarkenton
  7. Bart Starr
  8. Johnny Unitas
  9. Otto Graham
  10. Sammy Baugh
Choices that wouldn't surprise me: Marino, Favre
Sleeper picks: Aikman, Bradshaw
Old timer wild card: Sid Luckman

Rob Gronkowski is overrated. I wouldn't have put him over Shannon Sharpe, Jason Witten, or Antonio Gates.

He has 4 of the best TE seasons of all time, he could actually block unlike Sharpe and Gates, and he was a radically better weapon than Witten ever was. You can ding him on career longevity, but in his prime he has zero competition except Gonzalez, who was more of a big WR. He played a critical role in two Super Bowl wins too. Only Jerry Rice has more postseason touchdowns.

I think Marino gets in there and as much as people say Bradshaw wouldn't deserve it, I don't see how you can deny 4 Super Bowls. Tarkenton comes off your list.

Disagree on Gronk. Gates changed how the TE position was played and drafted thereafter.

Rob Gronkowski is overrated. I wouldn't have put him over Shannon Sharpe. I probably wouldn't put him over Jason Witten or Antonio Gates either.
Rob Gronkowski was a monster. In my opinion the best TE of all time. I am not a Cheatriots fan either.

I don't see how Marino makes it. Only 10 QB slots. Here is what I think:

For sure (3)

1. Montana (4 Superbowls)
2. Brady (5 Superbowls)
3. Starr (5 Superbowls / Championships)

Highly likely (4):

4. Elway
5. Staubach
6. Unitas
7. Bradshaw

Final 3:

8. Drew Brees
9. Otto Graham
10. Peyton Manning

Fouts and Marino didn't win a Superbowl -- they don't make the list. Favre was great but also we spectacularly awful at times. Love Aikman but I just don't see a way putting in the top 10.

Actually it's Brady & Montana + 8 slots10 total. So you've got two more guesses to make. :D

Also you listed Unitas twice! :p

I don't think Brees makes it because they've really limited the recent players in all the other lists, no matter how good they were. Like half the receivers were from the black & white TV era or something. IMO Brady and Manning will probably be the only 21st century QBs.

This is all just me trying to make educated guesses like everybody else, of course.

I would think Favre for Brees makes it a pretty good list and injects probably the best QB of the 90s in an otherwise 90s lacking group.

Marino makes it even if your only picking 5. Super Bowls are team accomplishments and have no place in evaluating individual performance.

Maybe Super Bowls shouldn't but we see that they do, especially when evaluating QBs for the HOF for example. But as I said too, yes Marino makes it and he's high on the list as you've said. If I have a bias, it's towards players who changed the game in some way and Marino is one of those guys. No way he's left off.

Marino was insane to watch in his prime given how the rules didn't favor the pass nearly like they do now. He was just unearthly but his teams basically never had a running back or defense.

IIRC he lost a game in the 80s where he threw 6 touchdowns like 48-42 or something stupid like that

Not sure how Brees should make it. He's never won an MVP.

Redoing my list because why not. Again this is me trying to guess the predictions, my personal favorites are a little different.
  1. Tom Brady 2001-present
  2. Peyton Manning 1998-2015
  3. Dan Marino 1983-1999
  4. John Elway 1983-1998
  5. Joe Montana 1979-1994
  6. Roger Staubach 1969-1979
  7. Johnny Unitas 1956-1973
  8. Bart Starr 1956-1971
  9. Otto Graham 1946-1955
  10. Sammy Baugh 1937-1952
Marino and Elway straddle the 80s and 90s. I would drop Elway personally, but I think the judges will pick him over Favre or Aikman from that period. I think Favre get seen as "historically fun" more than "historically great" and Aikman suffers from how incredible his teams were, paradoxically.

The 70s get sold short here, but it's hard to credit Bradshaw too much for the Steelers success on a team so dominated by defense and running the ball, in spite of having 4 rings and some very good postseason play. Staubach is just too good to ignore here and was THE iconic QB of the 1970s. Tarkenton was a human highlight reel before people even used the term, but 1 All-Pro and 1 MVP in 13 years with no rings doesn't feel like it cuts it.

Baugh-Graham-Starr-Unitas seems like a solid run of old QBs. Starr gets overlooked sometimes but had 7 total championships split between pre-merger NFL and Super Bowls, and 2 Super Bowl MVPs, and his career passer rating in the playoffs was an insane 104.8.

I could see Staubach and Aikman not making it but for sure AIkman won't. Aikman has the title of "playing on a stacked team" going against him. I could see them passing up Roger but I see him making the list. He always seems to. Highly respected.

The panel included Gil Brandt and Belichick, whose dad coached at Annapolis when Staubach was there. I bet they stumped for Staubach hard.

Ok I didn't know that. Yeah I mean Staubach is the go to. Especially when you need that Cowboys representation. He's going to be the first guy on these type of lists. Him and Emmitt. Seems like Mike and Troy are the ones who get left out a lot.
