Interceptions, like sacks, are an offense statistic, not a defense statistic.

This has to be a scheme or coaching issue. I looked up the Cowboys INT stats going back to 2010. Since 2014, the Cowboys have never had more than 10 INTs and never ranked better than 24th in this category.

They had 18 in 2014, 15 in 2013, 15 in 2011, and 20 in 2010. I don't know what changed in 2015 to cause the dropoff in INTs but they went from 18 to 8. 7 is the lowest number of INTs they had in any year since 2010. They had 7 in 2019 and 2012. One thing I noticed is Sean Lee led the team in 2011 and 2013 with 4. He only played in 6 games in 2012 when they had a big drop off in INTs. Demarcus Ware left the team in 2014.

So basically, lack of INTs has been a problem for the last 5 years.

In 2016 they were third from last with 9. A whopping 2 more than 2019.

13-3.

Plenty of blame to go around.

Just saying.

The maddening thing is we don't give up a whole lot of long balls due to it, but it wears the defense out having to consistently be on the field. Watching TE's feast in the middle and RB screens go for 15 yards was perhaps the most frustrating thing to watch all year (aside from offense ineptitude/anything involving ST).

Quite frankly I'd rather give up the long ball now and then rather than this "death by a 1,000 cuts" the defense seems to suffer with.

There's a reason why the league is playing more man-to-man than zone. QB's are so much more accurate and passing offenses so more refined than they were even 20 years ago that they eat zone defenses alive.

Even playing a modified pass defense with the corners playing up and man-to-man and the safeties in a some sort of zone would be better than seeing the defense break the huddle every play and the corners are 7 yards off the LOS... That just depresses me.

For all those who state...we didn't beat any good teams, Dak sucks, why did we not score a TD in 3 games etc etc etc.

The fact that we tied with Arizona (5 wins) and Detroit (3 wins) for the least amount of interceptions in the league should give you an indication as to why we ended the season 8-8 and disappointed so many times this year.

This is an ongoing problem and just a completely baffling development from the self proclaimed "Purge Squad".

Start here when looking to place blame followed by the horrific special teams play that missed a million fgs, had horrific punting, and the worst starting field position in the league.

The real culprits.
Great post and so true.

If only the Dolphins had known the 2020 draft order in advance of trading Fitzpatrick, things might have been different.

Tua and others will be there at 5 , they still have fitz to bridge the gap but Tua or Herbert can use some time to heal and develop..fitz is good for that..it fell in their lap..i like they played hard to the end, beat NE and still get a QB at 5 win win gives the team a boost for next season..

In our version of “bend but don’t break,” I think the fear is that if you turn your head around to look for the QB or the ball, then you might get burned, i.e. break.

What they don’t consider is that you might get just as many or more positive plays for every negative play.

I mean if they knew the Cowboys first round pick would end up being worth more than the Steelers...

Season high 19 missed tackles in a game doesn't help.

All around the league, even with the real bad teams. You would see a game changing play by the defense/st's.. I can count on one hand how many times this happened with Dallas' Defense. Everyone likes to point the finger to the coaching (rightfully so), or Dak, But this defense was bad. That's on the players as well as coaching.
Falls into no accountability.

A lot of it is the scheme played and some of it is our CB1 is a guy that never makes interceptions. They will definitely upgrade from Heath next year and have a different scheme. Also Woods will get better with more experience, the tipped balls aren't easy plays and only a couple of NFL Safeties are actually good at those.

It boggles the mind, how one week our offense was deadly, but the defense was no where to be found... then the next week our defense shows up, and our offense was atrocious. ST was just a damn shame, not a tad bit of improvement until they got Forbath, which was to late in the game to make a bit of difference. I'm still hanging my hat on this coaching staff, because if you look at it the way I painted it, there HAS to be zero game planning together. It's like ole Rod said meh, it's my defense I'll game plan it, and Moore saying the same, but neither side meeting in the middle to put it all together... just can't fathom how irregular this bunch was week to week. IMO though, our season ended in NY against the lowly Jets punching us in the mouth.
