MNF needs something groundbreaking and risky to get its luster back. I think if they do procure Romo, they need to cut out the play-by-play announcer and have Romo paired with another color analyst.

ABC/ESPN already does something like this with the CFP games on their sister channels with the coaches and reporters just talking about the game as it happens.

The reason why Tony is great is because is commentary is everyman but with obviously superior knowledge. He explains just enough to enlighten folks without going over their heads. His personality is light, fun, and charismatic.

Picture watching the game in your mancave with Tony. That's the idea I have. Without him literally being in your house, Romo and his co-analyst would talk the game, get excited, and explain nuances.

I think it'd be great. Gruden would've been the perfect guy to pair Tony with. Obviously Jon isn't available, but what about someone like Brees if he retires? I'm sure there's better choices, but it definitely needs to be one to equal Tony's charisma.

Kevin Burkhardt and Tony Romo would be the best duo. Davis isn't bad, but Burkhardt is probably the best commentator in the business right now and he gets the second slot.

So, I'd much prefer Romo with Fox. So hopefully they jump in on this.

Is MNF salvageable? I am for anyone that gets McFarland off but CBS would be dumb to let him walk for money and is the NFL willing to do for ESPN in scheduling what they did for Fox in taking over TNF?

Besides that, Romo hasn't gotten into the golf part of the CBS part of it yet. He gets max exposure with better games and with CBS gets to be a part of his two favorite sports.

ESPN is in desperation mode and reportedly offered Manning 10M a year to do MNF and for someone who is already known, that is a step down. ESPN is coming to the crossroads with all of the rights fees they've got and growth is limited. I would be surprised if they kept MNF, when it's up, and one of the streamers didn't take it.

It would be better off as a NFLN property and let Eisen and Warner do the announcing. Warner did a really nice job.

Actually MNF is shown nationwide, where as the games he does on CBS are only shown in certain markets on any given Sunday
There are various variables determining viewership and they can change week-to-week. For example, Week 14's national CBS Chiefs/Patriots broadcast pulled 28 million viewers compared to ESPN/Monday Night Football Giants/Eagles 11 million viewers. A couple games back in Week 10, MNF's Seahawks/49ers slimly beat Romo/Nantz's Chiefs/Titans by a million viewers (15.84 million to 14.84 million viewers).

In my opinion, MNF could do better even with a poor product if they were on an over-the-air network like their previous home of ABC. Cable networks restrict viewership to subscribers only.

My Boys can't even get to the Playoffs, but hell, Jimmy is in the HOF and now Romo and Aikman are #1 and #2 in the broadcast booths. I'll take my Cowboys wins anyway I can get them.
To add to this, both Tyron Smith and Zack Martin are making 1st team all-decade next week !

It's up to Romo.

He absolutely does not have to take the highest bid.
Not saying he won't, or that CBS won't match, but Romo is under no obligation whatsoever to sell himself to the highest bidder.

Sounds like he can already get 10 mil from CBS though

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are saying?
No you got it and I agree. My thing is for those (not you) saying Romo will chase the money are not considering he has choices that may supersede the greed label being put on him.

There is a belief Romo will jump ship because of money. Well, Jerry Jones made Romo an extremely wealthy man. Romo derives an exceptional income from commercial endorsements. CBS paid him $4 million a year. Romo's agency had already opened negotiations to up that to $10 million a year.

CBS will try to keep Romo. The network may meet his agency's original $10 million per year offer. If so, negotiations will become a wait-and-see situation.

Will Romo ask his agent to play hard ball with CBS and see if they match ESPN's offer? The what will Romo do question is nullified if CBS does match ESPN's offer.

Will Romo be satisfied with the $10 million a year offer, which CBS will highly likely approve because of ESPN's higher offer? That is another possibility that "Romo is all about the money" speculators have not considered.

I, for one, will be interested seeing reaction commentary if the latter happens.

Tony doesn't need the increased exposure that comes with CBS/FOX over ESPN or with the SB gig every third year. And it only took him 1 season for him to have nothing left to prove when it comes to perfecting his craft.

Less demands on his time and more money would be a no-brainer for him to accept. Can't imagine anyone labeling him "greedy".

EDIT> Scratch that. I can imagine plenty of people knocking him. But I can't imagine anyone being able to justify it with a reasonable argument.

If they get Romo they gotta bring Nance with him. The MNF booth has been unbearable since Madden and Summerall left. Time to pony up the $ and get an all star team in there. Booger can stay, for the memes.

The thing is with CBS it's just broadcasting. With ESPN it's the morning shows, the debate shows, Sportscenter, etc...etc. They'll work him to death.
That's what I think. Like, I can see him doing 5 Good Minutes on PTI all the time lol.

I'm a bit surprised that CBS hasn't added him to their golf coverage or college hoop. Tony might not want to at this point, b/c he still likes to play, but at some point, I imagine him being just like Nantz and covering a lot more than just footballl games.

Hope this doesn't happen. The entire ESPN presentation is horrendous. They'd only drag Tony down into the muck with them.
