We'll know after he goes head to head with a few blocking fullbacks early on.

With the history of rosy outlooks from this FO, I'll wait and see him on the field. It would be a tremendous boost if he is 100% because I think he was missed far more in the front 7 than they'd like to admit. I think he was special, when 100%, but not as special as he could be.

I hope his recovery is not what they're trying to sell with Jaylon Smith. If you watched him at ND as I did, he's not even close to that player.

He needs to have a long heart to heart with his family... looks like this current surgery could get him back to 100% on the field again— BUT another injury that requires surgery puts him at huge risk for an injury to his spinal cord— which is just simply not worth it

I hope he stays healthy— but his condition is a serious one for sure— and he is playing one of the highest risk positions for neck injuries.

On the surface- LBer looks good— but IMO, we need to draft some young talent there in April and have a plan in place to replace LVE should he get hurt and Jaylon if he can’t get back to playing consistently.

I agree. The current starter situation seems to be in a precarious position. A seeming house of cards that has quickly gone from 'set' to a series of question marks.

any ortho surgeon worth his salt will say "prognosis is good." The reality is, everyone responds differently to this kind of surgery. There is really no way to know. I have had the very same procedure done and I haven't been the same since. That doesn't mean LVE can't be 100%...it just means its a crap shoot. Time will tell...but THIS IS SPINAL SURGERY AFTERALL. It involves nerves, muscle, cartilage and bone. If just one of these things doesn't refire correctly, it is a failure.

LB coach has his work cut out for him. Both he and especially Smith, regressed last year. They have to return to 2018 form.

Will be interesting to see how they fit these guys into a new defensive system. Will there be position switches? Will they blitz more and use Smith in that role?

yup, LVE AND SMITH...all of the linebackers were a step behind and woeful all year. They looked out of synch and crap, how many times did we see missed tackles, poor tackling, blown assignments and running backs in the flat uncovered? It was like they weren't taught coverage on screens...it was a theme throughout the season. Greenbay exposed this early and all our opponents copied that with great success. We never adjusted..and if we did, it speaks to how much our linebackers regressed. Like you said, we have our work cutout for us figuring this out. Who is our new linebacker coach btw? HAS that been announced yet?

Surgery being a success means nothing as far as being able to play football is concerned...
That's a pretty goofy comment. Obviouisly a successful surgery provides a dramatically better chance of LVE playing again at a high level than an unsuccessful surgery would.

Smith was always a question as far as intelligence and play is concerned. I think LVEs neck issues could have probably more of a factor for him. He probably has significant range of motion issues in his neck on the field, which most likely affected his ability to scan the field and react quickly.

I'm hoping for position switches. Based on strengths and weaknesses, I think Lee (if he returns) at WLB, Vander Esch at MLB, and Smith at SLB.

I'm glad to see the prognosis for a full recovery is good. That's great news. But it does not mean he will ever be "football ready" again.

Recovery from fusion takes 4 months minimum. And you just don't know how the body is going to react when you are nearing the end. I had disc replacement instead of fusion. I was lucky and my health and condition did qualify me for the newer procedure. But my left thumb and index finger are still only about 60% feeling. At least the pain is in my neck and shoulders is finally gone. And that was excruciating.

If LVE ever plays football again, he is going to need a special neck and back harness built into his uniform to help prevent re-injury and help provide stability. And his head mobility side to side and up and down will definitely be compromised by the fusion surgery. How much is unknown right now.

And, of course. If his neck is re-injured, at best he's looking at more surgery. At worst, paralysis or permanent pain management for life or both.

I don't know man. We'll see.

Good luck, LVE.

If it was goofy, why did you respond? Dallas and LVE opted for a MINOR procedure. Even if it was successful, it simply means the surgery was successful. It doesn’t DRAMATICALLY improve anything.

That has little bearing on his ability to play again. There are really no cases where players came back from issue like this. Chad Hennings for example is one such person. They may have gotten a roster spot but they retired after a year.

Can't wait to see the Wolfhunter on the field again. He's a special player. With competent coaches and a new defense I'm convinced we will see the 2018 version of him again.

Tell me the last time they announced a football player's surgery as "unsuccessful", even when they're later proven to have been botched. This carries as little weight as when they first tried to downplay his neck issues coming out of college. And the second time, when it just needed rest.

But you go ahead and continue to believe that 'all is well' once again. Third time's the charm I guess...

And it ended Irvin's career after one big hit when it was identified. Spinal stenosis has ended plenty of playing careers.

Exactly.. Why anybody would want to compromise their spine and risk paralysis for a couple years of football is absolutely asinine. As a fan, I’d want this guy to retire, because it just isn’t worth it.
