We're really not in the position to take the true BPA, we have to draft the BPA at a position of need.
Every team does that, there are two boards, the true BPA one and one based on their specific needs. Then they have the debate about just who are the BPAs.

And BPA isn't settled for a couple of years after the draft. Zack Martin was the BPA in his draft.....if not for Aaron Donald but the Cowboys scored big with their best BPA in 10 years.

If you take BPA you end up with Zack Martin. If not you end up with a Soft Taco. BPA is the way to go.

However, if a clear differential talent drops, you take him regardless of need. E.g., the OL isn’t perceived as a great position of need, but if an OL rated as a top 5 pick drops to 17, you take him because you have no idea what injuries will happen.

the team needs DT and safety 2 main needs. This team is not devoid of talent. Most who cover the NFL understand that this is a talented team which is why Garrett lost his job. They saw the talent and no reason why this team should have not made it to post season. Clearly if your mindset it we have little talent and need a lot of players fine, but I don't see that.

There are 25 UFA coming due. That's almost half of this team and there's no way the Cowboys would be able to resign all nor will they necessarily.want to. There is a certain amount of player turn over every year and that amount is even higher with the addition of a new head coach. If you think that DT and safety are the only real needs for this team I suggest you look again. The Cowboys are very short on good LB's and that could get worse if Lee decides to retire. Tyron Smith has had an injury problem for 3 straight years now and he also lead all Cowboys linemen in penalties this past season. His level of play has shown some deteriorating so getting another solid LT would be smart in the event that Smith goes down again next season.and/or his play slips some more. LG has been a rotating situation because of injuries and play for the last 2 seasons. Way to many people still think this line is the same dominant line of 2016 and it's not. I love the Cowboys but I also know they need more help than just DL and safety.

Several are low cost FA some will leave yet has nothing to do with getting quality players in the draft. I'm not opposed to staying at 17 but I would never say I would not move up if a player I really like was sitting a few picks before mine. Saying oh we have to stay no exception is stupid.

I am so tired of this. I wish I can find my old post and just re-post for the rest of my life.

Bottom line is the definition of best player available means it does not matter if you move up, move down, or stay put. You draft the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE!!!!!!!!

See Taco. Wasted pick and he’s gone. See Trysten Hill. That’s what happens when you reach for need.

It's obvious that counting is not your strong suite. 25 UFA, almost half of the team and having a few players that will eat up a very large part of the cap and remembering a portion of that cap has to be kept in reserve for rookies, not all of the 25 will get resigned. So lets say maybe 4 of those UFA get resigned to larger contracts and another 4 get smaller contracts that still leaves 17 players of of those another 3-4 get vet minimum contracts or some other free agent from other teams get those, that still leaves 13 or 14 player spots left and the Cowboys have 7 draft picks. Now you talk about quality players and most feel those "quality" players usually come from the first 3 or 4 rounds and then you say if there is a quality player they really like but have to use ANOTHER pick, often in that 2-4 round range, use just gave up possibly getting 2 quality players because of that lost wasted pick on a trade. I'v said it before if the Cowboys thought they were only a single player from getting to the Super Bowl, I'd have no problem with trading up to get that player, but we both know that isn't the case and the Cowboys will need all of their draft picks to help fill some of the holes left from those 25 UFA's that didn't get resigned.

Looking at the chart I would say if a player like DT Derrick Brown is still on the board at 12 or 13 you bet I would be willing to move up to get him. I'm not opposed to staying up at 17 but I also do not know how the draft will play out and if the opportunity came where a player I may have rated very high and feel he would bring a big impact to a area of need then yes I would not be afraid to go get that player.

If that player that fell was Burrow or Chase then maybe give up a 3rd yo go get them if you think that they will improve the roster. But that’s not going to happen most likely. More likely option is a trade back than trade up. JMO.

We are not keeping all 25 FA, some will get signed but there are very few that will be big contracts. If I can swap 1st rd picks and give up a 4th to get an impact player I would do it. Dallas will also be involved with FA but thinking that all draft picks will even pan out is a joke. If I can walk away with some of my pick being impact players that makes a hugh differance. Take Donaldson out of the Rams front and they are not crap, that 1 player makes a hugh differance. Again Dallas may stay at 17 but I would never throw away option as you seem willing to do.

We all know the 2 players you named are top 5. Dallas is not going to move up like that. if you get a player as mentioned like Brown who slips to 12 then what it would take to move up is not that high of a price. Frankly I don't see Brown falling out of the top 10, only way that happens if after QB's there is a big run on WR.

Yes. I agree that the players mentioned are concensus top 5 picks. But that’s the point. If one of those players fell to around 12 then you might say the cost of moving up would be worth it.

There is no point in moving up to say a player at #12 that is only worth the #12 spot because it’s not worth giving up the draft capital to go get him.

You probably want to try to move down rather than up at #17 unless something really unusual happens.

Aaron Rodgers fell way down in the draft that year and that was not anticipated. I’m talking about moving up for a top talent that free falls for some odd reason. That’s about the only reason I would move up.

We can add reading and comprehension to your list of things that need vast improvements in. Nowhere did I say that the Cowboys would sign and keep all 25 UFA's. In fact I did say that probably 4 will get big dollar contracts that will eat up a huge chunk of the cap space. I also said there would be 4 that get smaller contracts and another 3 or 4 will get vet minimum contracts whether they are part of those 25 UFA or from other teams. All teams ahve to keep enough cap space to cover they rookies. That still leaves 13 or 14 players. We have to go all the way back to the 70's when the Cowboys hit on 12 of their 13 draft picks and nobody thinks they will hit on all 7 this season, but they have to have enough bodies to get to the 53 player roster. Now using as you say an additional 4th round pick to get a high impact player is wishful thinking. If that player is considered to be that much of an impact player it's going to take a higher pick than a 4th rounder to throw in to get him. Now you've used an additional pick that may not turn out to be that big impact player but very well may turn out to be a solid starter. It's also possible that the Cowboys end up with a big impact player at 17, at least a solid starter, but with your plan the Cowboys could lose out on getting a couple of solid starters for one big impact player and then having to sign more undrfted rookie free agents or cast off vets that have not developed or are older that they can get cheap if there is cap space left. You seem to forget that the special teams need lots of help and that's where many of the mid to late round picks end up making the team. Like I've said before if the Cowboys were just a single player away from going to the Super Bowl, knock your socks off trading up to get that big impact player but the Cowboys aren't there and can't afford to be giving up 2 draft picks for a single player and giving away the chance of getting a solid starter and be able to get enough talent to fill their 53 man roster..

Bottom line, I would be willing to move up 3 or 4 spots to get a player I really wanted and you wouldn't. I understand the FA we have really do not need you letting me know there are 25 FA. You say giving up 2 picks? Really you are swaping 1st rd picks we would get 12 and give up 17 so that is 1 for 1 but would likely have to give up a 4th. So in the end you used 1 mid rd pick and if that gets me a player like a Donaldson then you bet I get that guy. I highly doubt Brown will make it out of the top 10 but would never limit myself saying I have to have all 6 picks, fact is most of the later rd picks tend not to make it but at least I can say I got 6 guys.

First off you keep saying Donaldson and Rams don't have any Donaldson so I'm assuming your mean Aaron Donald. Second when making your point about trading up to draft a player you should use a player that a team traded up to take. The rams did not trade with any team to move up and take Donald. The rams took him with the 13th pick they had. Third, if a team is going to trade up for a player like Donald it's going to cost that team a higher than a additional 4th round pick to get him so that means either a 2nd or possibly a 3rd round to go with that 1st round pick which means in all likelihood costing the Cowboys another probable starter. Fourth, you're right that often 6th and 7th round picks don't make it but when they do it's usually for special teams, but you were talking about the 4th round pick and they usually do make the team. How about Prescott? How about these players taken in the 4th round. Jared Allen, Brandon Marshall, Elvis Dumervil and Darren Sproles. How about just the Cowboys. Pollard, TE Schultz, Damien Wilson, LB Hitchens and going back further Doug Free. Now some of those 4th round players turned out to be very good players and none of them were the throw away type players you think happens with 4th round picks and why you think it's so easy to just waste that pick. Some just on the Cowboys play vital roles as backups and others are/were actually starters, one the Cowboys QB of the future. Again if the Cowboys were one player away from getting to the Super Bowl than do what you have to do to trade up and get that big impact player but since they're not in that position they need to find as much talent as they can to help fill the needs from all of the 25 UFA that aren't resigned.
