Free agent QB situations should be leverage for contract negotiations

How could it not be?

Look at New Orleans..

Brees will be available..

Bridgewater is available.

Taysom Hill is a RFA and I can’t imagine them not wanting to see him on the field ASAP with his contract status and their long term future at that position.

So we could have Drew Brees and Tom Brady both available.

Then there is a long list of other QB’s starting with Winston, Rivers, Mariotta, potentially Derek Carr.

Who knows how the chips could fall...

How is this not a ton of leverage for the Cowboys to use in contract negotiations if they so choose.

Some of those guys are upgrades and some of them would perform just as good as Dak if they were in Dallas.

If Drew Brees becomes available Dallas should be all over that.

Instead we will give Dak a long term deal and some smart team like the Titans will go get Brees or Brady and be better off for it then we are.

Heard on sports radio this morning that the Pats are willing to give Brady 30 million a year which to me would be insulting. Guy deserves a lot more.

They have no offensive weapons and a late round draft pick...

30 million is more then plenty for a 43 year old QB.

At this point I would take Dak over all the QBs mentioned.

Brady is the GOAT, but age appears to have finally caught up to him somewhat. When the drop off comes it is usually swift, and that could occur this season. Same with Brees.

Taysom Hill isn't a starting NFL QB. He is just a gadget guy.

I disagree and think we need to see more..

The MVP of the league this season was a borderline gadget guy btw.

Taysom Hill has looked really good in the pre-season and has been decent when asked to throw in the regular season..

He’s very talented.

I've seen enough to determine he isn't starting quality. He will turn 30 prior to the start of the season. Jackson may be a borderline gadget guy, but the difference between he and Hill is quite wide.

To me Brady and Brees would be progress stoppers at this point. They come in for a year at best, and we lose a decent but not yet great QB in Dak. Not saying he will be great, but he could be a Russell Wilson type. As he can carry the team if he has the surrounding players.

Sp if Dak is gone, and one of these other QB's come in, Are they really any better than Dak at this point?
Also what is the QB plan going forward. Still need someone to replace Brady or Brees, which will be a later round draft pick. Then you are back to, what do you really have at QB.

I am not for giving Dak a huge long term contract, as I prefer he plays under the tag, and gives another prove it year under a new HC.
Or they trade up and draft a QB in the 1st round. I still like to see them draft a QB in the later rounds if not.

If Dak gets a new contract, give him the 4 years, not the 7 years, unless it is back loaded to not cost a cap hit if released. However even both of those could be bad deals, as what if this next year he does not improve. Still not a horrible QB, but not the QB to carry the team if players go down. Or maybe he could be, in the end do we really know what we have at QB. Still better than most though.

If Dak hit the market right now, he'd be the #1 free agent quarterback, easily.

-Brady looks cooked.

-Brees can still play at a HoF level when everything is right (ask the Colts), but his arm has faded late in the season for two straight years, and he is now a year older. The risk is that he goes 2015 Peyton Manning and just loses it entirely in the 2020 or '21 seasons.

-I like Teddy Bridgewater, but he is almost a clone of Alex Smith. There's a place for him in the league, but there's also a lot of things he can't do.

-Jameis is Jameis and has shown no signs of improvement.

-Taysom Hill... I'll just say that I trust Sean Peyton to use him, but I don't trust the NFL's average OC. Let the buyer beware.

I mean, when you look down the list, no one will give you the same value for the next 5 seasons that Dak does. He's a true long-term answer at quarterback, while everyone else is either a stopgap or a lower-tier quarterback with an offense-restricting flaw (Bridgewater's arm, Jameis's head). Dak is priced at a different level than all these guys, and he and his agent know it.

Cowboys are not winning a Super Bowl with any of these QBs. Dak Prescott was a gift from the Cowboy gods. If he did not have a false arrest before the draft, he would not have been a Cowboy.

Since 2016 this team in spite of a clueless Head Coach and Dumbo GM won 2 NFC East titles and has never had a losing season. Dak Prescott is one of the main reasons for success in spite of failure at Head Coach and GM.

Dak is a 20ish TD a year QB who doesn't turn the ball over much. (Even though he fumbles a ton)

The reason we are "good" is because our Oline and Zeke can control a game and not expose Dak to having to carry the team on his shoulders.

I am not sure Brady would come to Dallas but I would absolutely check it out. Probably same with Brees. Here is the thing though, the guys you are targeting if you are going after an FA are probably somebody like Bridgewater or Keenum, somebody in that area. That salary works and they have enough up side to be able to win for you, IMO, if needed and you can manage the cap with that salary. Rivers would be a guy but I don't think he fits the WCO.

So the thing I see here is to go out and get a Vet who will allow you to go forward. Go out and draft a QB and make that pick early. Leave the ball in Dak's court and if he doesn't show up in camp, then let him sit and deal with it because honestly, if the reports we've heard are true, we aren't going to be able to deal with him and his agent either way, unless we just give in. You can't do business that way.
