Although we have little to go by yet with Mike so far..

McCarthy reminds me of when Jimster came with his UM staff.

Jerrah wants a repeat of that success no doubt.

We shall see.

Clearly what McCarthy wanted and received was control over the coaches with their loyalties to him.

Not to Jerrah.

That's an excellent start.

All the talk about a college HC just seemed like a huge waste of time and money as we would have to deal with a learning curve doing that.

McCarthy and these coaches already know the ups and downs of their positions. Most would like to go on for their own HC opportunities.

When McCarthy did not return to football after 2018 and took his time off..

these coaches were obviously told he would hire them again soon.

He did.

So here we are..

We stand an excellent chance of the assistant coaches having done similar introspective reviews of their schemes as McCarthy has done.

No doubt McCarthy quizzed them about how they would go about coaching under him, what did they learn, what would they change or why stay the same, etc.

Garrett never did that in hiring his coaches and never had final approval..Jerrah did.

So as much as we belittle Garrett, this was the only way he could coach in Dallas.

Not true for McCarthy.

McCarthy could have picked any of 6-7 teams in the NFL.

The fact he came here knowing our history is gratifying.

Somethings could go wrong for us still to come.

But I like Mike. They say teams take on their coaches identity.

We shall see exactly what that is soon.

We’ll see..

Packers getting rid of him and getting to a NFC championship is not a good look.

I also don’t like that he is not calling the plays.

It’s easy to have success when you have HOF QBs. He should’ve had much more.

McCarthy is a good ole boys hire if there ever was one.. He’s NFL family.

I like him alright. I think our roster is going to be worse, though, so it’s hard for me to get too excited.

hmmm...

this is a good point

so let’s remember

1. McCarthy will be coaching a worse roster than JG did
2. McCarthy is taking over an 8-8 team

hence, a better record than 8-8 next season will mean McCarthy is a better HC and did a better job in his first year than trash Garrett did after 10 years of coaching and “building”

There was not a whole lot of teams interested in McCarthy, the Cowboys where the 1st and only team to interview him. The fact that he admitted he lied to JJ to get the job is worry sum to me. It's going to have to be a "wait and see" thing for me.

You're Wrong. The Panthers interviewed him twice and with the Giants and I believe he interviewed with the Jets and possibly the Browns. https://pantherswire.usatoday.com/2019/12/28/panthers-mike-mccarthy-two-meetings-report/

I thought he had other interviews supposedly after Dallas.

You say he lied about that?

Really?

Oh you are nothing if not direct.

I think we can be better if all McCarthy does is to have campfires and roast marshmellows..

and sing Kumbaya all night.

I wonder how much say he really has over hiring his own staff. The KM hire felt very forced - McCarthy had been vocal about how giving up playcalling in 2018 was a mistake, and if he was going to come back, he'd be calling the shots again. Then he gets hired by the Cowboys, and he's like "oh, no, Kellen's going to call the plays, I'm fine with that." I think he genuinely likes KM as a coach, but giving up control to any OC was never part of McCarthy's plan either. That reeks of Jerry.

That being said, I think KM is a great OC and a way better playcaller than the last few years we've seen of McCarthy, so that's a win in my book. I like the results there, but I don't like the process. Most of the position coach hires seem pretty good as well, so I'm on board with maybe 90% of our new staff.

The one hire I really, really don't like (well, besides McCarthy) is Mike Nolan. He had 4 or 5 different stints as a DC and never really showed anything besides basic workmanlike gameplans. He's been a position coach for the last 5 years, because no one even wanted him to try him out as their DC any more.

Bringing him back to a job he more or less got fired at because he's friends with McCarthy reminds me so much of McCarthy's loyalty to Dom Capers. McCarthy kept hanging on to a DC in Green Bay who was clearly overmatched and figured-out, and it probably cost the Packers a Super Bowl appearance or two.

Like I said, it's the process here that bothers me the most. Jerry is still meddling in the bigger picture, and McCarthy is showing a very Garrett-esque combo of pliability to ownership and loyalty to mediocre friends.

Sad thing is that would have been true with any head coach we'd have brought in at least for the upcoming season.

I'm curious to see what it'll look like a year or two from now.

And going back to all that talent we had these past 10 years or so, where exactly did it get us? We were always the regular season and paper champions that found a way to quickly fizzle when it counted.

You’ve been slowly inching towards the dark side lately. What’s happened to you?

?
You should know by now that I’m gonna tell it like I see it. McCarthy was probably a best-available hire. But last year’s roster should have been the best chance we had at making a Superbowl run in years, and we didn’t even make the playoffs. If I thought the issue was the coaching I might be energized for next season. But I don’t. Which means I think progress needs to come from the players or the motivation of the players. With the number of free agents we’ve got exposed, and middling draft position, I don’t like where we’re sitting. Maybe that changes when the roster starts coming together. But as it is, I don’t see how you look at an off-season if attrition and paying more for the same players we came up short with last season as forward progress.

We’ve got organizational issues. You want to see them get addressed, but I’m not sure it’s going to happen.

No he called the Browns or Giants to let them know he wouldn't be interested in that interview (think it was the Browns). Before 2019 started the Browns, Broncs, Dolphins, and Bengals were all interested, but he wanted to coach the Jets.
