Cowboys don't need to draft WR

I think they hid Devin Smith after the Washington game for whatever reason...

I think the problem was that we really needed someone who plays special teams cuz we had a few guys banged up in that unit, and Street doesn’t play special teams. I know it sucks, and I wish we saw more of him, but I think we just needed special teams guys

I think they definitely need to add to the WR group.

We're one injury away from the WR group being an absolute early-2018 type of nightmare right now. When you know you're one injury away from utter disaster, it's really irresponsible to just shrug and not address that depth situation.

And even if Gallup and Cooper both stay healthy and give us 16-game seasons, the #3 spot still looks like a huge question mark that figures to easily be much worse than 2019. Cobb was targeted 83 times for 55 catches, 828 yards, a 15.1 yard average, and 3 TDs. Replacing that kind of player isn't as simple as tapping a random backup who is on the fringes of being on an NFL roster and asking them to go be as good as Randall Cobb.

Hopefully Cooper and Gallup and Jarwin and the running game pick up some of the slack to make up for us downgrading the #3 WR spot. But we should still be doing our best to keep cultivating a dangerous collection of weapons. Having such a good #3 was a big part of what made our 2019 passing game much harder to defend.

So I think we need to add one good rookie to the mix. If Devin Smith or Cedrick Wilson blows up enough to win the spot, fine, but I think we need another strong, young option.

And if there's one thing McCarthy did reliably in Green Bay, it was drafting tons of 2nd and 3rd round WRs. Because you can never have too many weapons to attack with in this passing era, and he kept drafting them and they kept developing and becoming the next stud starting WR. I want him to do that here, too.

Greg Jennings, James Jones, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams? He drafted them all in the 2nd or 3rd round, most of them when his team was already so loaded that it seemed like a waste or a luxury. But go ask Aaron Rodgers if it was a waste or a luxury that he had all of them to attack with. Go ask some of our old defensive backs or defensive coordinators how happy they were when the Packers played us.

I hope they do anyway.
It doesn't have to be a 1st round pick.
Although, that Ruggs kid looks like he'd fill in the slot WR nicely.
The WR class in deep in talent. Solid players will be available in
the 3rd or 4th round.

People calling for Dez in the slot must've bumped their heads or "something".
Maybe he gets a chance somewhere, but I don't think Dez is coming back to Dallas.
Hey, maybe Houston gives him an opportunity to be a WR1. Bill O'Brien is now the worst
GM in Texas. That's hard to do... lol

Really like Wilson, wish he could stay healthy.
Lots of WR talent. I bet we can find a good one day 3, after spending day 1 and day 2 fixing the D.
Yeah, you simply can't trust Wilson given him being snakebit since joining the league.

I did like him coming in though.

With that being said this is a really deep WR draft and we should be able to find value in the 4th and 5th rounds.

Damn, I was hoping Dallas would keep Cobb. Cobb is a menace to all defenses. Especially when he's on a team with a legit #1 WR. I doubt we replace him.

The Cowboys don't need to draft a WR? What!? They need to be prepared if something happens to Coop or Gallup again this year.. they def need draft one because the other guys wont hold up if the above happens again. Honestly I wouldnt even be upset if they drafted one of those WRs in the first round even after Coop just got signed.. score score score.. outscore these opponents and quit with the slow starts.

I've been fairly surprised that Smith and Wilson weren't utilized more than they were.

I thought both players had the talent to be a lot more useful. Maybe this is the year?

If that was done for some valid reason, this draft has a good supply of WRs in 2020.

I'm thinking the two receivers that weren't top talent players were Brown and Bryant.

I still think if Lamb or Jeudy is the BPA when we pick and all the defensive studs are gone we could go WR at #17.
And we should. Heck I might even say go Ruggs at this point if the board is wiped out. If Cooper or Gallup go down with injury there goes the receiving corps.

There's likely going to be quite a few guys available in Round 4 that should have gone in Round 3 and above. While not a must, you have to give a deep look at some of those guys simply because our depth is questionable.

Maybe they are buying into Ruggs being an ultimate chess piece.

I think that guy creates space for everyone on offense and he is really more then a WR in that aspect.

If you overplay the run game he will get behind your defense.. He should also create space for other receivers too.

Agreed, if either if those two are there you have to assume they would be BPA.

Current WR roster

Amari Cooper - 1st Round pick #4
Michael Gallup - 3rd Round pick #81
Devin Smith - 2nd Round pick #37
Cedrick Wilson - 6th Round pick
Noah Brown - 7th Round pick
Ventell Bryant - undrafted

The Cowboys need to figure out if Smith or Wilson can be a #3 receiver. And they can always choose to bring back Dez to be a possession receiver.

They MIGHT draft a WR because the class is so deep with talent. But they don't NEED to draft one.

You are forgetting my favorite: Jon'Vea Johnson. Kid has got some jets and ability to separate, but needs to work on his concentration skills to make sure he's secured the ball before trying to run with it.

Clearly it's not our most obvious need but if a good one is available then take him.

Not a pressing need but definitely shouldn’t be off the table. 3rd/4th round could be really good value with how deep this WR class is.

No idea where this idea that Devin Smith is good came from. Stop the nonsense just because he’s on your favorite team. He’s been in (and out) of the league for 5 years and has 15 catches. It’s not a coincidence or some conspiracy. He’s good at running fast in a straight line and that’s it.

Maybe you're right. I hope so. But from my experience from both watching and playing a lot of football, when you have a good WR, a WR that just knows the game and how to get open, you take/keep that guy. Forget speed for a moment. I knew guys you could count on at 240 pounds 5'10 always finding a seam somewhere. A good WR can come in any shape or form. Ideally you want speed too.
