We will be alright.

Connor McGovern played both Guard and Center in college at Penn State. He has experience at both positions. Joe Looney will now be our starter. McGovern can be his backup even if he starts at Left Guard. Connor Williams has experience at both Guard and Tackle. If he doesn't start at Left Guard, he can be backup to both Guard and Tackle positions.
Exactly, and the VERY reason you dont draft for need, and take BPA.

McGovern wasn't a "need" last year. Somehow he is now quite important.

You never, ever leave a better player on the board because of "need."

This adds a new twist on the draft. Good thing they brought back Looney.

Oh Yah...….…...LOL...…….We won the division because of him. Last time he played center, Dak was sacked like 60 times and Zeke had like 7 TD's.

The voice of reason...………………………...Losing a pro bowl center is no big deal. LOL :lmao2::lmao::lmao2:

Frederick is one of the best centers in the league, even last year when he was probably at about 70%. This is s a massive blow to our chances to do anything in 2020.

Well. I can buy a Frederick jersey now.
it doesn't conflict with my no wearing a current Cowboys jersey.
He was a Cowboy his whole short career.

I completely understand this decision by TFred, and cannot blame Front Office at all for this, but my overlying off-season concern is that this team is not as talented as last year's.

Better-coached? Most likely.

Talented? No.

Deep? No.

This changes the entire draft strategy now.
The off season went from a plus side to way down Near even. It is still only better because of the coaching changes.

If they process this before June 1st:

  • frees up $935,000 in immediate cap room
  • Off the books going into the 2021 season

If they designate him a June 1st move:
  • $7M in cap savings (not available until June 1st)
  • Counts $6.065M against 2021 cap
Those numbers are accurate if he had been CUT, not sure that they apply in the same way when the player chooses to retire.

Doesn’t matter. Guy didn’t want to play anymore. Good luck to him. Looks like C is a key need now. Maybe see if Williams can save his career there.

Draft-wise, this isn't a great draft for centers. The Michigan kid is solid. Wisconsin center is okay. LSU center is ranked high but he got blown back into the pocket the few games I paid attention to him.

I wonder if the big Fresno State guard (Muti) can play center?

The Cowboys have taken some hits this offseason losing 4 starters on defense and now a starter on offense. Not to mention Cobb was a loss.

Retirements and cuts are dealt with the same way, except with retirements the team can try to recoup portions of signing bonus on remaining years.

from https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.c...-retirements-and-trades-affect-the-salary-cap

Teams can end a contract at any time, but so can players. In a player's case, though, the only way they can do this is by retiring. In the end, though, the math looks pretty much the same as if the player had been cut -- and the June 1 rule applies here, too.

For instance, if our player from the example above had retired instead of being cut, his money would account the same way as if he had been cut by the team. If he files his retirement paperwork on or after June 1, the money counts as if he was cut on or after June 1.

Just like anything else in the NFL, though, there is a "but" for this rule, too: if the player retires with time remaining on his contract, then chooses to come back into the league later, he is not a free agent. Contracts apply, in most cases, to accrued seasons, not calendar years. If the player doesn't play, he doesn't accrue a season. Therefore, his return to the field would put him back under the control of the same team, unless that team chooses to cut him. This rule is part of the reason why Barry Sanders chose to retire: the Lions refused to cut him, and he decided he'd rather stop playing altogether than play another season for Detroit. Conversely, Brett Favre retired, and then the team chose to cut him while he was retired. He was then able to return to the league later as a free agent.

Okay, there are actually two "buts" for retirements. When a player retires, the team has the option to pursue the return of a portion of the signing bonus equal to the unplayed portions of the contract, and that money is no longer counted against the salary cap. This is typically done through an arbitrator. This is known as the "Barry Sanders Rule" because this is exactly how the situation played out in his case, as he was required to pay back a portion of his bonus. The difference between now and then is there was no precedent when Sanders played; now, it's explicitly written into the CBA to allow for this arbitration.
