I constructed a formula to compare Cowboys draft the past decade with the other NFL teams.

Points were based on the degree to which each player contributed whether they were All Pros, starter, backup or role player. Then each category was weighted .These points were applied per game played.

For example, An All Pro for that season was worth 7 points per game, regular starters worth 4 points, special teamers 1 point. It didnt matter if they were playing on a different team, ita about the scoutong department recognizing talent.

The Cowboys ranked at #5 overall. Their greatest success was in drafting a large number of perennial All Pros. However, they fell hard to the middle of the pack in drafting role players, backups and special teamers.

I havent posted my findings yet but....Spoiler Alert!.....The top team is Seattle. Worst is the Jets. The real shocker is the high rankings of both Cincinatti and Cleveland.

As far as 1st rounders, yes good job.....completely neutrialized by the results of the pathetic 2nd round.

For me playoff success is biggest indicator of draft/FA projections than All-Pro votes. High profile teams like Cowboys will always get more national TV games & sports media attention. This national attentions will inflate All-Pro votes from fans. This is why every year we seem to hear Cowboys have one of most talented teams in league but ultimately don't even get close to sniffing championship game. There is a disconnect between actual talent and perceived talent.

Taco had 7.5 sacks in 8 games for Miami and actually played well. He had a season ending injury.

Taco had 5 sacks. Looks like he had 3 very strong starts, then 3 meh games, then spot duty for another 3 games.

Looks like Taco was being Taco at Miami. Though he was their top sackman last year, they don't know if they want to keep him at a mere 1.9mil.

Charlton was a healthy scratch for several late games in the 2019 season and his 5 sacks aren’t fully indicative of how irregular his pass pressure was throughout the course of the season.

How much of a jerk do you have to be to get sat when you're the team's leading sacker?

I would agree with your theory as it applies with the exception of skill players because they have obvious measurable results.

To be fair, he did have elbow/ankle injuries.

Taco is an average starter in Miami. Still not what you want out of your 1st round pick but we definitely gave up on him too early.

If a player refuses to do what the coaches tell him to and winds up getting waived for attitude....he was not given up early on...

Dude is an attitude problem with talent. If he checked the ego at the door and put more effort into the game and following coaches and less effort being a twitter warrior, that would be different.

Goodbye, good riddance. The Soft Taco moniker stays.

Sheesh, the dead part of the offseason started early..smh

Dallas having draft success, mainly with their 1st Rders is well documented. If anyone is surprised by this, well.. they haven’t been following that closely.

Taco is the only disappointment and that has been well regurgitated also. The fact is, Dallas has truely gotten the most out of their draft picks, definitely more than most other teams. I’m not sure what people want other than perfection.. and that’s not draft reality.

Yes, a few have gone on to have a couple good years after they left, but there’s plenty of variables that play into this.. I.e.- salary cap casualties. As others have mention, DeMarcus Ware (My Cowboy of all time) had health concerns and was straining the Cap. Unfortunately, a business decision had to be made. Not that the FO wanted him to leave, but Ware didn’t want to take a paycut(don’t blame him) and the Cowboys had to make the tough decision to let him go. And yes, Ware had a couple more good seasons while being surrounded by a great defense in Denver.

Secondly, I don’t subscribe to Micky Spags mantra of “There’s a reason a player is available in free agency, if they were good why didn’t their team sign him?” ..insinuating the player is less of a player.

Of course there are reasons.. Salary Cap being the main reason. Scheme fit(see Taco), attitudes(see Bennett), or even a players play. Example: A player like Hitchens, Dallas knew was really good and wanted him back, but his play priced him out of negotiations. WE CANT PAY EVER GOOD PLAYER TOP DOLLAR. (See Byron Jones this offseason). Trust me.. if there was no Salary cap, Jerry wouldn’t let any good player leave the building. Hence, the reason for the cap. It’s suppose to create fair and competitive play from all teams.

What the FO finally figured out is.. pay who you can, budget the cap, and find quality players at a reduced price that fit your scheme.

The real caveat here is.. Coaching. Coaching makes a world of difference on the perspective of players and the stats they produce. It’s no surprise, Bill Belichick, maybe one of the best coaches ever, can produce championships without having the big salary players. As a matter of fact, typically when a NE player is due for said “Big Payday”, he either let them walk or trade them away for more picks. He is ahead of the curve.

That said, time will tell what McCarthy can do and how our players and draft picks respond. Good news is, he’s done it before and Will McClay has proven he will obtain good talent to mold.
