1990s Cowboys-dynasty Zoners, how bad was the hate?

The media was a lot more entertaining during those days...and actually told exciting stories. Their views weren't limited by a ten second viewing period.

There was conflict, but a lot more compassion to what a fan actually valued. Then, if someone saw something not normal...he would warn a person of that fact. Today, too many see dangers and merely comment, 'Boy, he really is stupid.'

That was the time for Desert Storm and further Middle East developments...

I think back then, apart from fans of the other NFC East teams, most people liked the way the team was recovering from a couple of horrendous seasons and liked the young guns like Aikman, Smith, Irvin etc.
That soon wore off when we started dominating though and I think the hate really started when Jerry did his own deals with Nike and Pepsi... adding Deon just made it worse.
But if you think the Cowboys are hated now, it’ll be nothing compared to the hate that’ll come when we do eventually win another Super Bowl, number 6 will break the internet.

It was way worse than any team that’s been hated recently.

Lakers, Yankees, Pats....

None of those teams, even at the heights of their success, were ANYWHERE near as hated as the Cowboys...

I remember passive fans, yelling at TV’s - the kind of people who didn’t even watch football..

God I loved when Irvin made a huge catch and did his first down or other dance; yes we were indeed hated to the max!!!

It was utterly decadent, and it still is.

The real talk came when the down fall occurred.

Randy White on the sideline for the first time with what looked like a strained thigh
Switzer looking at film and saying Emmit is a lot slower.
Cowboys still looking good but getting eaten alive by Eric Dickerson as predicted in the playoffs.

Thats when I got the flack but it was at the bar not on the internet.

it wasn't as much the hate, that was always constant here in central virginia, as most are Commanders fans. What was surprising was the love for the cowboys, truly america's team.

Plenty of IRL hate in my area. The Cowboys were either prima donnas or bullies depending on the hater. Does anyone remember the Compuserve NFL forum in the early 90s? Plenty of hate there. One Commander fan would predict a Cowboys loss every week and when it rarely happened, he would say "I called it!" Lots of 49er fans in that forum too. All fans were mixed up together, there were no forums for each team.

I think one SB was tolerable, but multiple SBs was just too much and they lost their minds.

We had to read newspapers and watch ESPN for Cowboys news. Not as convenient but the world was a far better place without social media.

Cowboys hate has always been strong, but it got worse after the success in the 90’s.

I'm a Millennial Cowboys fan who grew up abroad and completely missed out on the entire 1990s dynasty.

How intense was the anti-Cowboys hate back then (especially during 1992-1995?) Was it thrice as bad as today? Did all of non-Cowboys America fervently wish for Dallas to lose?
I live in WI. My Packer fan friends absolutely hated the Cowboys. Because of the 90's they still absolutely hate everything about the Cowboys

To take the question a bit further:

1. For those of you who lived in rival territory, what was it like? (We already had folks chiming in from Eagles land; how about those living in Niners/Packers/Giants/Commanders country?)

2. Was there a massive outpouring of schadenfreude and glee over Cowboys defeats, such as the 1994 NFC title game?

I moved to San Jose just after college in 1994. I had and met a bunch of friends there. Most of them were 9er fans. During those big games I couldn’t sleep the night before and would be prepared for war the next day. We would always have big parties during the game. It was brutal. Sometimes it would get heated, they really hated us and to this day made me hate the 49ers.

Now it is much more mellow around here about the Cowboys, but I am sure if we started winning more January/February games, things would ramp up.

That was what I was wondering for comparison. Imagine if the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in the 2012-2015 era. It would send everyone nuts/over the cliff/ecstatic/enraged/smashing their teeth.

In the internet and social media age, the Cowboys have pretty much been a non entity regarding a Super Bowl run or even the playoffs in general really... Yet still the Cowboys are the biggest draw regarding tv ratings and social media talk.
All these 20 odd year olds and younger, who say they hate the Cowboys, mainly because they see older people saying it, won’t know what’s hit them when number 6 does happen.
It’ll be the first time Cowboys fans will really be able to fill the internet and media and give it large... and it’ll definitely be large lol

I guess it depends on where you were. I’m a local so we didn’t see any hate around here. I did travel to a few road games during that era and the hate was rampant. Worse was in Filthadelphia.

I can only speak for the in person hate and I've got some good friends that are East fans, 2 PHL, 2 WAS and 1 NYG, and we've been going around like this for over 40 years, trash talking and I lived in PA from 89-92 during Buddy Ball so you can imagine how bad it was.

When they finally arrived and even all of those guys could see it coming, the hate was even close to what it had been when Landry was coaching because many equated his demeanor to be arrogance and back then there was a lot more divisional rivalry.

The people I know that were Cowboys haters back then, and it was every bit as much for the fans as the team, would try to make excuses for Cowboys success but that 90's team, I've yet to find a real football fan that didn't think that team belonged in the best ever conversation along with GB, PT and SF.

I have always had those mixed feelings with other teams but I do not only appreciate greatness, that which separates itself from all around it and that's how I felt about GB, PIT and SF. Damn I really can't stand them but damn, they're really great and I love watching them. A lot of fans felt that way about the 90's Cowboys too.

The backlash from all that Buddy Fever he fanned up there was over the top. But he was smart, he came in knowing the number 1 team to hate in PHL and he pounced on that with both feet. And he loved getting under Johnson's skin. Who puts a bounty on a kicker?

I was active duty at the time. A first class PO from Pilthy would make my life hell when the Cowboys did well. Needless to say I had a rough time. I did however got him back really good once.

Internet was out two years prior (1991) Cowboys 90's dynasty.

They were testing wireless devices back in 1938 too. Most people didn't even have computers in 1991, let alone internet service. Nothing like it is today.

In 1995 I was in the Georgia Dome watching the game vs the Falcons. Memory tells me it was Deion's first game with Dallas. Anyway, Falcons went up 10-0 and I was getting all kinds of trash talk in my section. Then Dallas reeled off 21 straight points to take control of the game and eventually win 28-13. After the 3rd TD, my section was totally quiet. I had a few falcons fans tell me things like "no hard feelings" that they just wanted to take down the best team in football. So from my perspective, there was a lot of respect for what Dallas had built in the 90's. At least that respect was there in places outside Philly. LOL.

Back then, we embraced the hate.

“Wanna be us? Come and see us.”

Miss those days...

There were some cowboys fan groups. I participated in some of them. The real hate was between the 49er fans and us. There was also a lot of respect.
