Randy Gregory a former top 10 prospect that fell all the way to the end of rd 2, due to drug use concerns. Him failing a drug test at the combine, foreshadowed his future with the team. Gregory has been suspended more games then the games he actually played in. He 27 years old and still playing on his rookie contract in which the team still hold his rights through 2021 season.

We are all well aware of his condition of being Bi-Polar and self-medicating himself by smoking marijuana. I personally know all about someone being bi-polar and how challenging it can be as my ex-wife had the same mental disease. Finding the right medication combination is very difficult, where many who suffer from the disease don't feel like themselves when on the medication.

Randy Gregory reportedly filed reinstatement paperwork with the league office. No decision has been made on his case thus far. With the new CBA, marijuana is no longer punishable by in game suspension. However, players are still going to be tested, the may have to seek mandatory counseling if the player fails multiple tests. I read a story in which Gregory refused voluntary to enter a program, where his agent almost had to kidnap him to get him help. This is something that could derail Gregory's future in the NFL. I do believe he will be reinstated at some point prior to the regular season.

On the field, Gregory has all the physical gifts to become a legitimate edge rusher. He actually is a better run defender than many of us think due to his small frame. With the Cowboys changing their defensive scheme, he might fit ideally as that designated off the ball pass rusher.

His success on and off the field this year could determine his long-term fate with the Cowboy Organization. You would think a player like Aldon Smith and what he has gone through would be an positive influence on Gregory. If and a big if, Gregory gets his act together, he has the potential to become a breakout star!

Nice post. IMO he's one example of un filled potential at its finest along with David Irving as the other. Thought those 2 had skill sets that were distinctly superior to most, if not all current and recent past d linemen. And that is to include Tank of whom I'm not a big fan.Has been discussed quite a bit here but very unfortunate that the risk to reward experiment in both those cases didn't offer better long term answers to supplying a consistent pass rush that's been missing for some time now.

Just maybe, Gregory can finally buck the odds, become an outlier and evolve into a long term solution but I doubt it.

Good God, how long has Gregory been in the league. I'll go look it up but it FEELS like we've been talking about this dude for 5 or 6 years already...of which he's played what? 16 games altogether?

If they changed the rules and he can get in a good camp then he may be useful. When he played last time he got good pressure. He needs to watch the roughing calls though. He got a few that was at bad times.

Can’t be a breakout player if he is not reinstated yet
They are taking there time. I assumed after the rule change he would be reinstated. Guessing the rule will be retroactive..

Xavier Woods, Randy Gregory, and Jourdan Lewis have been breakout candidates for the last three years. They have the tools, yet they are all still in custody. So now, some are thinking they have a shot with a new CO taking over. I say, I'll believe it when I see it. They still need to crawl through 200 feet of raw sewage before reaching the river of opportunity. Let's just hope they pull out their rock hammers this year and get to knocking that wall down.

Laughed out loud at "still in custody ".

The break-out proposition for Randy Gregory is to start and finish the season with the team and without any relapse... everything else is gravy.
He can relapse once reinstated and he wouldn't be suspended at all. We just need him back in there...a bit unfair if you ask me.

He failed weed tests that are no longer going to be punishable but he still has a stigma. If he was drafted this year, he couldn't even be suspended for marijuana use. That aspect alone really shows you how stupid this is on the league's part. Reinstate the man already.

I don't expect much from him. in his years, he is been on the team, off the team, on the team, off the team. when he was he showed potential but he was weak against the run, made too many mental mistakes. I doubt if he is going to break out.

Dallas is taking the approach of throwing people at the problem, the RDE problem. hoping somebody is going to step up. or that they find 4 that can contribute enough.

I am tired to waiting for Gregory to breakout. I will have to see it for a period of time before I believe it.
He has to actually be on the field. If reinstated this could be his first time we get to see him for a entire season. He will be in rotation.

Gregory has never been "weak against the run". He has been a far better run defender than Quinn was in 2019. He was the best run defender in his draft class of the good outside pass rushers.

Don't count on it.

His 6 sacks in 2018 was probably as good as it gets.

Really? This is based on what? Gregory played that season after a suspension. He did not have a normal camp. He took time getting into game shape. By the end of the season he was the best DL on the team. Coming out he was thought to be a top 5 talent. Talent wise he is the best DE they have.

oh, I don't disagree. quinn was down right awful agains the run...Gregory maybe better than him, but better than quinn doesn't make him good....he was very average to below average against the run, most often because he didn't follow his assignments and was too aggressive in trying to pass rush, and would get washout to the outside giving up inside lanes.
