MY top 10 All time Cowboys list:

1 Emmitt Smith
2 Michael Irvin
3 Larry Allen
4 Randy White
5 Roger Staubach
6 Bob Hayes
7 Demarcus Ware
8 Tony Dorsett
9 Erik Williams
10 Troy Aikman

i have to take my Cowboys list just as the Ring of Honor and the only reasons why i'm hesitant to add Deion Sanders and Charles Haley
as such is because they are not Grass Root Cowboys - they did not origin as Cowboys.

if i went further Rayfield Wright, Darren Woodson and Tony Romo would have been next ups.

:oldcouple:
You absolutely cannot leave Lilly out. Romo's not close to this list, sorry. Meredith makes the list way before Romo.

You could replace Aikman with him. I kno , i know but hear me out. Troy was on a team stacked with HOF-caliber players. Tony did a lot more with a lot less talent around him.

Ahhh now what a minute. I'm going to get called a Romo hater for this but oh well..........

Tony did a lot more with a lot less? How? What did he actually accomplish?
All those guys on this list played with stacked teams.
Aikman's career shouldn't take a hit because he played for a smart organization and coach.
The greats play with great players.

Romo was a good QB, not great by any means. Romo wouldn't make the top 50 list. And I'm not a Romo basher at all, he was a good QB, but simply doesn't belong in a top 10 list.

Players easily better than Romo: Woodson, Erik Williams, Cornell Green, Don Perkins, Nate Newton, George Andrie, Witten, Harvey Martin, Cliff Harris, Drew Pearson, Neely, Rayfield Wright, Niland, Jordan, Flozell

I'd have to say that's simply both recency and position bias.

I’m definitely not trying to put Romo on this list (maybe a top 20) but he is definitely more accomplished than Meredith. Give it up Boomer.

Nice list.
I wouldn't put Emmitt at the top and maybe not even top 3, but that's jmo
Either way, if you are on that list, you are an all-time NFL great

No, he's not. Back at ya, because this one isn't even close. Dandy is in the discussion for #2 w/ Aikman.

As yourself what type of numbers Aikman would have put up If he had played in a pass happy offence or in today’s pass happy NFL. Aikman was that good.

All of that may be true but you can’t really argue that they picked a former NFL MVP, 6x all pro, SB MVP, 3x SB Champ, NFL All time rushing leader and rushing touchdown leader as the top player.

Emmitt also has the most rushing yards and rushing TD’s in playoff history as well. Emmitt is criminally underrated...he should be thought of the same way Jerry Rice is as a receiver. You could make a legitimate argument Emmitt is the most accomplished player in NFL history.

I'm with you on this. Loved Roger but Emmitt was the engine that made those those 90s teams go and those teams delivered at a better clip than Roger's teams. I think the love for Roger is aided by lore and hero worship fueled by, you guessed it, the team's emerging popularity back in the day (America's Team and all that). It's the same popularity reasoning people are now trying to use to slam this list for having Emmitt at the top. Can't have it both ways. Most accomplished Cowboys (and NFL) player ever at the position and the engine for 3 SB Championships. "Lore" doesn't trump results.

Love that my hometown guy Randy White is in the top 10. Met him a few years ago at the Cowboys draft (not the one we hosted).

Emmitt has this odd relationship with the fans. I know people love him but he seems underrated for whatever reason. I'm not sure if its because he played in a era full of great running backs like Barry or what. With as decorated as Emmitt is.....seems like he should get far more respect than he does. He's arguably the greatest Cowboy of all time.

Yeah that is pretty shameful. Were talking not only Cowboy history but a top 50 NFL player all time. Probably 80% of people that post here never got to see him play. Which is why I could never put Randy White ahead of him and I loved Randy.
My thought exactly. Randy was my #2 favorite player as a kid (behind Tony D) but I don't see how you put him ahead of Lilly.

Any list that does not have Roger Staubach at number one is just wrong

Or maybe the list was compiled by someone not influenced by Cowboys lore or bias and just looked at the history of the team and its players.

It's because he was the epitome of grinder. Emmit didn't have long speed, wasn't flashy in the least. What Emmit did was get positive yards more than any RB in history. Emmit = Witten. Same player. They're the guys that move the chains and keep the O on the field. The ones people don't appreciate.

Then they never looked at Roger Staubach play and what he did.
