The season opener is just 2 days away, let's take a look at the team's personnel weaknesses, in no particular order:

Swing Tackle-many are nervous about Cam Erving needing to start a few games. He was brought in to do just that, a veteran with starting experience. He is as good as last year's backup in Fleming. Problem is there is a big drop-off from our starters, that can be said around the entire league. It's always a position in high demand as there just aren't many quality Tackles. It's up to the coaching staff to protect these reserves more so then they do with their starters, avoid the Chaz Green nightmare! Let's hope Collins comes back fully healthy in 3 weeks and Tyron can stay relatively healthy. It would be wise for the team to start developing a future starter at the position.

DT 3T-with the loss of Gerald McCoy early in camp many wanted the team to go outside the organization to find his replacement. They do have two high, upside prospects at the position, where Hill was a foreseeable cut by many at the start of this year's camp. Hill reportedly has had a tremendous camp and will be apart of the rotation. They still do have Tyrone Crawford who can play inside if needed. The need is really in the base against the run as they have plenty of pass rush options that can kick inside against the pass.

Corner-many believe the cornerback position has taken a major hit with the loss of Bryon Jones to fa. The group is pretty much the same outside of rookie Diggs and veteran Worley. First off, I for one thought Jones was vastly overrated. Good shadow corner who had zero ball skills, considered a poor tackler. He had one legitimate pro bowl season in which after he was named his play fell off late that season. Trevon Diggs is an high, upside prospect who could eventually be even better then Bryon Jones. He was terrific in press coverage on the college level, with tremendous ball skills. With an improved pass rush up front our corners should be more protected. There is still a need for another high-end CB, but they maybe able to hide the weakness.

Safety-we heard it all off-season, the team has to improve the safety position! From Jamal Adams, now Earl Thomas. We have to understand that Nolan's scheme uses safeties differently, not in the traditional sense by any means. They are used more like off the man corners, this is why we have heard that the likes of Awuzie, Worley, even Robinson can play there in a pinch. Brandon Carr is now in that same group. No more single high safety, but rather each safety playing their half of the field. I have little faith in Thompson, who has gotten glowing reports, but believe this position is ideal for Awuzie, he is excellent with facing the QB and struggles when his back is to him. Would like to see Donovan Wilson get some looks in different alignments.

PK/P-we are all aware how badly the team's special teams hurt the team last season. Maher was a complete disaster in which the front office took too long to replace. Greg the leg has a successful track record, but is coming off of his worst season. Fassell said it was due to injury, matter of fact said the same thing about our punter. Fassell is one of the best ST Coaches in the business, he should be able to turn around this unit pretty quickly and no longer be a liability for this team moving forward. He was probably the best asst. coach hire made by MM.

You missed Center. Frederick is a big loss. The line gave up the most sacks in franchise history with Looney at center 2 years ago.

I maybe in the minority, but I think they will be ok at the center position, especially replacing the Travis Frederick version of last season. Yes, Looney is just a short-term solution, not as good as making the pre-snap line calls, but like the young prospects developing behind him. Biadasz could take over as the starter even this season. Let's not forget the Cowboys won the division with Looney as the starter.

True strengths and weaknesses will be shown soon enough. Starting against the Rams. Our secondary may end up being a strength with the new coaches. Cam Erving might ball out at RT with these new coaches.

We just don't know until we see it on the field. And on top of that with the shorten preseason and everything that came along with that; we will not know for sure until about 3 or 4 weeks.

I am worried about RT and about the secondary in general.

Not too worried about 3T. I don't think we will be playing a lot of traditional 4-3 that puts a huge emphasis on the 3T. In the 4-3 under and 3-4 variants Crawford, Hill, Gallimore will be playing more like a 5-tech than a traditional 3-tech. I think we will be fine there. When we go nickel, I think we will be throwing a large variety of people including the even DLaw, Griffen, and Smith taking turns inside.

I am not too worried about Looney because he has had the entire season to prepare to be the starting C and I think we are stronger at LG than we were in '18. Williams struggled as a rookie and while Xavier is a fine run-blocker, he was a huge liability in pass protection.

I think if Collins can come back and play well, we keep the OL healthy, and a few playmakers emerge in the secondary, this team has a good chance to advance far into the playoffs.

Depression is no more about "weakness" than developing a brain tumor, Skip.
I'm not saying I feel that depression is a weakness. I was thinking the title meant one of 2 things: Either it was sarcasm directed at people like Skip (the more likely scenario) or the OP (whom I don't know and therefore has no expectations of, one way or the other) was one of the people here who agrees with Skip's stupid point of view.

But enough about that. Sorry to derail your thread, Cowboyny.

As far as a developmental tackle, they are clearly high on Terrence Steele.

I do wonder if it may be time to invest a higher pick at tackle...someone that can play both sides for now, and eventually settle in at either spot.

Also, let's say theres a longer term injury to one of the tackles....do they move Williams outside and insert one of the younger guys into the lineup?

That does indeed support the idea of getting your 5 best out there at once.

Williams excelled at LT at UT, and I wonder if Tyron were lost long term would Collins may be an option there.

Of course we have to hope this isnt an issue, but I've thought all along that Tyron, just behind Prescott, is the one guy we absolutely need to run the offense efficiently.

I'm not as down on Erving as most, but if he has to start at LT for any length of time that isnt good.

Biadasz is a high pedigree center who I expect will be the better option come mid season.

It arguable that he was hurt the most by no mini camp or preseason games.

He probably isnt ready yet, or the team isnt ready to trust him (I've said all along his first start should not be against Donald).....

But he will be in the lineup this year at some point and play well. Travis Frederick type of well? Probably not...but it's not like theres no one pushing Looney.

They also lost Martin for a spell, he was also battling a knee injury if I'm not mistaken.

Then, they lost their coach what like, midway through the season? I don't think you can honestly blame all that on Looney being at center.

Perhaps maybe not a day 1 pick, but would be fine on day 2. There is no indication they are moving Connor Williams to Tackle at least yet. You would think he would need some time practicing at the position. Surprisingly Connor actually has taken some practice reps at Center.

Keep in mind that every year, many of the off-season fan consensus opinions about weak or strong positions end up being wrong on most of them.

The off-season narratives are often completely gone by about the 3rd game.

It will end up being something unexpected such as some WRs missing games and that position being a problem while multiple CBs ball-out and get Pro Bowl consideration.

Did anybody see Byron Jones becoming a top CB back in the 2018 off-season?

Multiple injuries at the same spot will set that up nice and teams need to avoid that. No one is that deep.

Thing is, it never at all seemed like the staff around here accounted for that when it would happen....either in adjusting play calling or using help from another position.

Other teams would exploit this. It went way beyond the Green incident, that was just the headline.
