Stephen: No QB even with top 5 pick

What did you expect him to say? Jerry might tease it a bit to get some headlines but Stephen wants to avoid that. I'm positive that if they have a top 5 pick it will be a consideration. He's just not going to come out and say that in the middle of the season.

I keep telling you guys and you just won't believe me.

No joke. Even if we had the first overall pick we wouldn't take a QB. We'd trade the pick.

So don't waste your time worrying about losing enough games to get into position for one of the QBs. Those morons in the front office aren't interested.

You have one hope if you want to test negative for Prescott. That they just aren't able to sign him.

Well, that basically says nothing to me. The statement accredited to Stephen Jones says nothing, at all, about the draft. It only says that they want to sign Dak but they wanted to sign him last year and it didn't get done. They wanted to sign him the year before and it didn't get done. I'd imagine they want to sign him this year but it is about what he will sign for IMO. If he is still banking on a 4 year deal and he is looking at an increased price tag.

It goes on to say that QB is not a priority in the Draft but what does priority mean? Perhaps the team sees only Lawrence as worthy of a top 5 QB so it could be something later, it could be that they are looking at LT, it could be a great many things indeed.

There are no guarantees that we will be able to sign Dak so I don't think that based on what is written here, it precludes anything in the draft.

As it stands, the Cowboys are in position to have a top-five pick in the draft next spring, but quarterback will not be among the team’s priorities, according to Stephen Jones. The Cowboys have wanted to re-sign Dak Prescott all along and could us the franchise tag at a cost of $37.7 million. “Dak is our quarterback and we’re so fired up about him and him leading us in the future,” Jones said.

Only if Lawrence isn’t there. He’s not expecting Cowboys to draft #1 overall. But if they do Lawrence will be the pick. I don’t think any other QB would be a huge upgrade over Dak so BPA makes sense if Dallas doesn’t pick #1.

Looking at your avatar I can see why you'd concoct that theory, completely ignoring what Jerry and Stephen have said all along. They like Dak, they believe in Dak, even if some of us don't.

Besides, Fields is the guy.

Might want to see if they can make a deal before giving his camp more ammo. They can resign him prior to the draft and if not, use the draft. But that would take planning and they don't do that.

Would you
1. Sign Dak, draft best defensive player or OT
2. Draft Justin Fields and use the 40mm on defense. What would 40mm get you in free agency? 3~5 pro bowl caliber starters?

1.
Easy for me. You want a vet in his prime at QB. Young, studs on defense which, if Fields is there, we will be able to get a king's ransom of picks. Plus, FA is not a great route for building a defense, look to this year as proof.

This very well may be the case, but it’s not like he would say anything else right now. Until you have a top 2 pick you say the right things to keep your qb happy.

if they do get a top 2 pick you flip and have to make it seem like you want a qb just for trade value purposes.

Another rationalization.

Google Occam's Razor, then ask yourself why Stephen has to say anything at all? (Hint: he doesn't)

The key would be 2nd slot, cause you are not getting number 1 slot especially if jets lose tonight, stick a fork in it.
