The term staffer sounds different than if it was McCarthy.
Could be assistant to the assistant like Leon Lett or trainer. There’s lots of people in the building all who have important enough roles to cancel practice.

When you have a game on Thursday that makes Tuesday your only real practice day. You're not going to go hard the day after or before a game. Tuesday is it.

In a normal week, I would agree, but as @Risen Star posted above, Tuesday is THE practice day for a Thursday game, so it would likely have to be someone vital to the practice or that would affect many players.
