When I watched tape of Lawrence, the thing that struck was how unexpectedly covered his receivers usually were. I thought that was really weird for a big school. I started counting 1-1,000 2-1,000 while watching qb tapes. I think that explains. He throws the ball early. Usually before the thousand part on the 3-1,000. That's before his receivers have time to get wide open the way that receivers at power programs usually can. That indicates, to my untrained eye at least, that he reads quickly and throws it. Which is the biggest adjustment to the pros.
Justin Fields, for comparison, has some real arm talent and running ability. But when you do the Count Test on him, he almost never throws before 3-1,000 and often into 4 or 5. That doesn't mean he can't adjust. But he'll need to. And you just don't know.
When you go to a big program, my sense is that it trains you to hold the ball just a little longer so your receivers will get wide open. That's not the way the pro game is played, and I bet it's hard to lose that habit.
So I'm impressed with that about Lawrence, that he played like a pro quarterback even with the advantages of a big college program.
