Tomsula was always a highly regarded 3-4 D-Line coach with the 49ers. How does his firing make us more likely to run a 3 man line?

Unfortunately Dallas does not currently have the players to run a successful 4-3 or 3-4 defense. The dline is weak and LB corp questionable. To get the defense to a respectable level will take a multiple season complete rebuild while keeping in mind the unanswered question of signing Dak or not and an aging and injury riddled oline.

I think Jalen and Vander Esch (if he ever stays healthy). Would be beast in a 3-4 as the MLB's. But not sure where lawrence would fit and he is a highly paid person. I think we would need to find a NT too. Aldon played in the 3-4 as a 49er. So we are closer than people think to a 3-4.

3-4 defenses tend to be better vs the run at least when we ran it with Bill Parcells.

But with the way the nfl game has changed you will spend a lot of time in nickle defense and in the 4-3 you can tend to have smaller faster linebackers who are better in coverage then 3-4 OLB's that are basically DE's in a 4-3.

BTW I never knew the rams ran a 3-4. I always thought they where a 4-3 team.

No, Not wasted. Whit limited off season ,Pre season and new coaching staff. What else did you expect? Now they know who worked and who didn't. No more excuses in 2021. they have had their pardon. The old coach in me is excited.

No more excuses?? It's ALWAYS excuses with this team. Has been for decades.

Plus, Jerry wants to win NOW. We have the triplets at WR, but we cant afford to keep all three for very long. We have a talented but aging OL, Zeke is fading.

I don't think the WRs require a win NOW mentality. Gallup is in a contract year next year. We're not signing him. He'll leave in 2022, and we'll happily take the comp pick and cruise along with Cooper and Lamb as our top 2 WRs.

If Jarwin pans out as a receiving TE, we could have a more balanced run/pass offense, with Pollard as the WR/RB, Zeke between the tackles, and Cooper and Lamb wide. We don't have to go 3 wide as our base. I'd rather go with a RB/WR tweener like Pollard as the 5th man. Multi run threat offense.

LB are questionable? They're a joke! Ones over the hill, the other a gimp, and other suffers from fragility.

I'd be much happier if fragility were LVE's main problem. He's just playing poorly.

If we had 2018 Jaylon and LVE to go with Gregory and Lawrence, we'd have a strong core to build a defense around. But they both tanked. Now we're talking about whether we even want to pick up the 5th year option on LVE, and most want to cut Jaylon outright this offseason.

Our LBs are bad, and we just played the old bad ones this year instead of developing young ones who *might* give us something in the future, like Gifford and Bernard. They were our two highest rated LBs, per PFF.

Are we going back to the complete 3-4 scheme? Remember Dware played most of his HOF career in it. Could Randy Gregory have similar results?

If the Cowboys look in-house for a replacement, George Edwards spent the year as a senior defensive assistant. He was Zimmer's defensive coordinator from 2014 to 2019.

But the first question that must be answered is what type of scheme the Cowboys want to use. In Green Bay, McCarthy employed a 3-4 scheme for most of his tenure. If he wants to continue with the hybrid look Nolan attempted to use, adding players to fit the scheme will be an offseason priority. In all but three years of his time in Green Bay, the Packers used a 3-4 scheme.

What do you do the 40% of the time when D Law is on the Sidelines? Why not incorporate a different look?

20 Million Dollar Man playing 60%. And that's a true game average as well; he never missed a game. He *is* our best defender. We are so dumb.

Meanwhile, we played Aldon 73%. The 31 year old who hadn't played in 5 years. Tough row to hoe.

And Gregory, the younger of the 3, averaged around 40% snaps when he was finally available to play.

Dorance Armstrong got 63%. The 4th got more snaps than Gregory or Lawrence.

We are so dumb.
