While I'm not making any apologies for Nolan, it's just possible his scheme would work, but due to the lack of prep time because of Covid he just didn't have the time with the players he needed. The defense was so bad it's a stretch to say it was the lack of off season time with the players, just noting that we'll never know, he's gone.

Back to "hoping" for a better defense next year...

My problem with his scheme was he had terrible play up the middle. Running a 4-2-5 is ok if you have a beast in the middle.

I think trying to make some of the changes in scheme with little time in camp and no preseason was the biggest mistake. I think it is hard trying to make changes with no time to work on it and make corrections with it.

I know some of you will go kicking and pounding fist. I expected that, but this is a much doable thing. ;)

You are probably right, but he might not be any more effective trying to run a different scheme than the one he is used to directing. Just letting things ride might not have done much better.

In 2020 Dallas gave up 386 yards per game, in 2019 it was 327, hardly stellar, running the same scheme as last year doesn't give one confidence it would be better enough to get this team to like 10-6 or 11-5. Maybe enough to win the division, but not win much beyond that.

This year is best forgotten, for a number of reasons....

And they can't not know it.

They will either fix it or won't.

We have already seen the dumpster attempt fail.

Let's see what they do.

I just hope Quinn didn't tell them he can win with these players in order to get a paycheck.

I think we need help player wise as well, I think it is short sighted to blame everything on coaches when players also have a role in success or failure. I don't think replacing Nolan makes us an instantly great defense, we need upgrades and in my view DT and FS are 2 big ones to address

Im thinking Jerry and Stephen were saying all season had we just had Marinelli’s D, with this offense, we can succeed. Hopefully we get a lot more talent.

Nolan did stink but players are not off the hook and we need help on that DL big time.

To my knowledge, no one that criticized Nolan ever argued the players were good. But the reality is that there people here that tried to make excuses for Nolan and attempted to rationalize that he was a good coach being let down by bad players.

I tend to think it was a bit of both. I do think trying to implement a different scheme without having the time in camp and pre season was a big mistake and Nolan should have adjusted to the situation instead of pushing the change which hurt us. Player and or position upgrades clearly are needed and again in my view none bigger than a DT. I like Gallimore but we need another guy inside who can help shut down the run and put pressure up the middle on pass plays.

I agree with the first sentence. I think he was let down by players not willing to buy in to his scheme as I believe professional players should. I accept there is a question mark around his teaching, but his scheme I believe in, we just needed the players to make it work and I think he should have been given time to run this with the players he wanted.

We may have been better off. Marinelli defense not great but guys hustled and played stronger vs the run. It tended to be bend but don't break style defense so less risk of giving up the big plays

When was the last time a team couldnt run up the middle or pass for an easy 10-15 yards over center?

Cowboys have had terrible play up the middle for the last several years, that's nothing new.

Unfortunately...

It's kind of weird to think that Terrell McClain might have been our best DT over at least the last five years. Everywhere else he's been just a guy, which tells you how bad our tackle situation has been.
