With Lawrence and Gregory we don't need the right defensive end type or the five technique strong side defensive end.

Between Hill and gallimore I believe we have the three technique covered

We need the 315 plus pound one technique and we need the 300 lb 6 ft 6 with 3 ft long arm four technique defensive end.

We need a free safety but can run from the middle of the field to the boundary on a 20 yard throw. We need another corner to either push Brown to the slot or to play the slot.

We need depth all over the place.

We could use an improvement over Smith and lve.

We need competition on the offensive line to tackle and in the interior.

Sure, but if we draft a Taco type of player at #10 does that fix the problem? If the grade is there, I'm all for it, but if you draft a DT at #10 you want a Donald type of player, not soggy Taco. Donald has to be there to draft him, or you get Soggy Taco. (Yes I realize they play a different position).
I don’t think you’re getting what I’m saying. I’m not saying we should reach for A specific player. I’m saying don’t let the position dictate where a DT is drafted. I don’t buy the argument that a DT should never be drafted that high. It’s just a stupid way to think. Any player can bust. There’s never a certainty.

World theory is valid but can be taken too far. That being said if you have a guy that has rare body type and rare athleticism and production in college then he needs to be taken very high at whatever position he plays.

unfortunately the only player that kind of meets those requirements is the Michigan lineman. Put him at strong side Lawrence at weak side and Gregory at the Leo.

There is no defensive tackle this season that merits that consideration though.

That remains to be seen.

DL Needs:
SDE
1Tech

Quinn needs to find a 4Tech because there isn't one on the roster, and Stephen's cheap idea of placing McCoy there is a typical loser move. I think Barmore would be soild for this position, plus he can line up at either DT on nickel.

New coach is gonna need two 1Techs. I like some draft available players in rounds 2-4, but signing a veteran to stabilize the position early would be ideal.

3 players needed in the trenches, and maybe 1 edge.
I don't know if he has anything left, but Tyrone Crawford seems like a 4T type to me. That guy just needs to be a good run stopper with enough mobility to slide down to the sideline.

And who did he have like that at Atlanta? I'm seeing Steven Means as his LE who was 6-3 250. Maybe backup Allen Bailey who was 6-3 288

We looked at Quinn's base defensive alignment, what needs do we have to fill?

LE-Lawrence/Armstrong (Will DLaw play the 4T in the base defense?)
NT-Future Starter, Woods (Don't think Woods fits any longer)
3T-Hill, Gallimore (Team may bring in a veteran, so young prospects aren't forced to start)
RE-Gregory, Anae (Will Gregory just be a nickel player?)

Biggest question I have, does DLaw start at the 4T LE or as the RE (Leo)? The 4T is basically a 3-4 DE in this scheme. However, Michael Bennett played the role in Seattle's Base Defense.

NT-is more of that traditional 3-4 massive type that two gaps, anchors and occupies multiple blockers. The need is just a base run defender and he will come off the field against the pass.

3T-are either Hill or Gallimore ready to become impact starters? If the team doesn't believe so, they would bring in a veteran, bridge type of starter, can of what they hoped for in McCoy.

DE-no matter what they decide to do with DLaw in the base, they need to upgrade the depth at the position. Armstrong hasn't shown much of anything since he was drafted, Anae has yet to see much of any type of on the field experience, Gregory has never been a base starter, he also is playing on 1 yr left on his contract.

Free Agency

-I think the team signs a mid-tier NT Starter
-Short-term bridge starter at 3T
-Bargain experienced former starting DE
Exactly who are these massive 1techs you speak of? In Seattle Brandon Mebane played the position. He’s listed at 6’1” 311. In Atlanta they poached Tyler Davidson from the Saints listed at 6’2” 309. Both are lighter than the 6’1” 318 that Woods is listed at!

What I read up on Quinn's defensive scheme (posted the link yesterday), the DT two gaps like a 3-4 NT. In my opinion, we won't see those so called 3 Tech's playing the 1 like Marinelli used to play. You want size, length and the ability to hold up multiple blockers. More of an anchor then a penetrator.

I agree that you should not devalue a position if that specific player is elite. If the player is worth the draft slot make the pick. They used to say that about guards too

Staring LDE - DLaw is OK as a backup.
Starting 1 tech DT.

I like Hill as our 3 tech starter.
I also like Gregory/Smith as our RDE combo.

yeah Chris Canty Type.
I see an alignment like this:

3-4 DE, 0-1 Tech NT, Hill/Gallimore, Lawrence (Leo)

LVE-Mike, Jaylon-Will, Gregory-Strong

Basically two run anchor type players are needed. Since they aren't pass rushing positions, should be easier to fill.

Need a DT like Haloti Nagata, Fletcher Cox, Star Lotulelei, or Aaron Donald
Ngata is the only NT/1T in that group. Donald is obviously the top 3T in the league with Cox not too far behind when he's healthy. Lotulelei hasn't done much in the league - don't have him anywhere near the others.
