if you were FO staff for billion dollars sports franchise id take your comments seriously but the FO for the real DC not the internet GM know it alls have all the bases covered, they know what they are doing..its not just Jerry sitting up on judges pulpit without help..he has an army of team of lawyers, Cpas, and many other executives that deal with just Cap and contracts..

they have it covered..

jeez some of you have no clue..its billion dollar corporation not some home based business they are running..

It's a billion dollar business burdened by nepotism. While they "know what they are doing" in terms of operations the bottom line is they're not producing results.

As long as the results are lacking they are not beyond reproach. Running a business they're good at, winning championships not so much. It's a fair criticism.

I would trade Zeke if for nothing else but to set the tone and send a shock through the locker room

Do it BEFORE the draft.......afterward, our leverage drops to damn near zero
While the Cowboys leverage would be less after the draft, it would not drop to zero.

With people speculating that half of the NFL (up to 17 teams) are searching for a Long Term Solution at QB, and there are not 17 QBs in this draft class that would fulfill the demand. Hell, you might be lucky if 3 QBs in this draft become "franchise QBs". And if somehow 5 became "franchise QBs", it would quickly be in the conversation for the best QB class in NFL History while still only fulfilling 1/3 of the demand.

In even the worse case senerio, the Cowboys are not screwed if they don't get something done before the draft. JMHO

Btw, if you’re going to come with the “you’re just a fan, why are you sharing your opinion, you’re just a fan. You’re in no position to question anything”

Then why are you on a cowboys fan message board, going into a thread discussing the QB’s contract status, that was started by a cowboys fan?

if that’s truly how you feel then dont even bother posting on the board or reading anyone’s thoughts.

Either way, you’re in no position to tell me or any other fan on this board, what we are or are not allowed to have opinions about due to our lack of qualifications.
Because in his mind only his opinion matters, and if you go against him he freaks.

Personally the incessant defending of the team and underperforming players no matter what reduces his credibility to the point where I've about had it trying to decipher the way he writes.

Being positive is one thing...but constantly defending futility with insults isn't exactly much of a contribution to what this place actually is if you ask me.

I think you did a nice job of breaking down the options. The Cowboys will pay Dak and continue to not win anything. They aren't clever enough to roll the dice and go in another direction.

They'll score enough points to be discussed, lose against top competition, keep floundering on defense, and each summer Jerry will think he's got a SB roster. Wash, rinse, repeat.

You rock!

Yes yes yes. Jerry has it all covered. He has a track record of massive success over the last 25 years.

He and his front office are clearly beyond question at this point.

I mean. Who is anyone to question their decision making at this point? They’re infallible.
That makes you shoe dirt then because i said his stuff has the cap and money on lock,,you saying different makes you ignorant.

Once you have established a winning culture you can replace one or two high priced players per year through the draft while keeping the core together. K.C. will be fine. What you can't do is overpay underachievers.

Every team has to take cap considerations into account with decision making.

teams make poor cap decisions all the time. Jerry included

Your argument is poor and weak as hell. Just go away dude. Honestly your argument is weak, not really on topic and I don’t care about it.

Hey Kids. Deep thoughts here. As Dallas is not in the playoffs again I have been having deep thoughts about life and how to win in the cap constrained NFL. The cap was adopted in 1994 so its been around 26 years. If you look through time 2 winning models dominate - Win during the rookie deal and Superstars taking a discount. The only outlier is Mahomes and he just signed his deal so we need to see where KC is in a couple seasons. The top paid player is never the champion. Manning’s contract hurt the Giants, Ryan never won, Stafford never makes the playoffs, Rivers retires winning nothing, Rodgers hasn’t won since he became the highest paid, and it goes on and on. Wilson is an example of a rookie contract winner and Brady, of course, an example of a guy that won multiple times taking a discounted salary.

I am so back and forth on Dak. Love the guy but can’t get over the fact that this team has so many holes to fill and they need to pay him 40 plus? It is looking like this draft is going to be QB heavy early so almost no shot Wilson or Fields falls in our lap. Watching Wentz the thought of another ND St QB makes me vomit. I also think the chances of Dak taking a discount is zero. Add in the beyond moronic Zeke contract and I officially believe they can’t afford to pay Dak.

Looks to me like the best option is trading Dak, hope a QB drops to them and if not rolling the dice with a short timer and going into tankathon mode for next draft.

That’s my official stance. Am I wrong? What do you think?

I think, predominantly, you are correct. Although you might add in another few ways of doing it:

1. Build a defense and get a good cheap bus driver.
2. Draft really well, avoid busts and keep your cap healthy with cheap draft labor.

I think Dak is good enough to win it. But I think his margin for getting it done goes down simply because there will be less money around him.

Tom Brady probably isn’t the best QB of all time (he’s just a really good, solid QB). But he was the smartest by taking less than he could have so The Hoodie could put a team together around him.

There is no doubt that over paying for a QB HURTS your team immensely. But it is equally devastating to pay a guy like Crawford 9M per year to do nothing. It’s insane.

The Zeke contract is a killer now. At the time he was our best player and JG needed him to save his job. It’s the only way he knew how to win. The regression of Zeke has been remarkable. Sad.
The Zeke contract is really not as devastating as some of the others, but I wouldn’t have paid him either.

You have that right for sure.

Their best option is to try the Non-exclusive FT but they don't have the balls to do it.

Honestly, in the end though, I don't think they would get it right whatever option they choose, so from a fan entertainment perspective, Jerry just signs Dak to make sure they have a high flying offense rather than go smaller at QB and create a dominant D.

"DEEP THOUGHTS"

-Dump/trade Dak a top 5 QB entering his prime wanting market level contract for his skillset
-"hope a QB drops"
-"or roll the dice with a short termer"
-"Go into takathon for next draft"

Dumb idea award!!!

Thats not a plan, thats just embarrassment suicide. Has Dak really embarrassed you that much?

A) You can sign Dak to a long-term deal and still have space to work with. Between lower cap hits in early years, league revenue increases, and cuts/restructures you still have the space needed to make a move or two.

B) The majority of the offense is under contract with some decent depth as well. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the team doesn’t really need to put many more resources into that side of the ball.

C) Sign 1/2 veteran starter level FA’s and draft 3-4 starters/contributors on defense. With the picks we have this should be doable.

D) Good coaching. Whether Mike can do it or not is unknown as of right now, but if you can get a B+/A coaching staff then you’re cooking.

At the end of the day the question isn’t, “is it feasible to build a team around a high-priced QB”. It’s can you make the correct decisions in the process. The reality is you have the resources to build a SB competing team. The question is can this FO make the correct moves to make it happen?

Certainties become uncertainties quickly in this league. You have to be able to make large strides in 1-2 offseasons. By the time the Joneses fix one issue another springs up due to their lack of proactiveness and football instinct. To me the resources are here to make it happen we are just a bit too reactive for it to all line up unfortunately. Will Mike be fired a year too late if he’s not the guy? These are the type of things that worry me.

I understand the stance WJ and you may be right- but here’s why I don’t think it’s the best stance in my opinion- We can never assume drafting a young QB in round 1 is going to be sure thing good QB. IMO, it’s a bigger gamble than signing Dak. The other thing is, even if we got someone like Lawrence, your team is going take longer to rebuild. Even a great QB talent like Lawrence would probably make the rebuild longer.
