God this is true.......I think Oprah once said the money doesn't make character, it reveals it. In other words, if you were a jerk before you had money, it's going to make you a bigger jerk. Check this out.......kids like this will be fine WITH OR WITHOUT the NFL.

Good on Jalen. No kid should have to battle cancer.

....... >>>>Define good, Mr Bennett?? Dont cheat, do drugs, steal things, drink..etc. Or fowl mouth, ego maniac, womanizer, money-binger etc. Sounds like an Ego caught fire and had to deal with the remnants afterwards.

That is a very interesting read. Bennett is a very insightful former athlete. Being a professional athlete has its perks but also its deep burdens. Most fans probably have a very skewed view of what it really means to be a professional athlete.
Exactly
And in the end athletes are like any other person
Some are good and others aren’t
I’m not hanging out or being friends with them so I do care what kind of people they are as long as it doesn’t effect the team
I never cared about Gregory smoking weed other than the fact it hurt the team
It’s his life and it’s his business
But the fact it cost him games that is an issue

There in lies the problem for most because a young spry fellow will spend with the mind set that they'll be young forever never taking into consideration this can be taken from me at anytime. There are many who were never trained this way and put their trust in people to manage their earnings while they just spend and make more. One my good friends did an interview with Clinton Portis on his radio show in D.C. man some of that stuff Marty was saying was reading exactly how Portis interview went. He said that he literally got wiped out before he even knew it by a guy managing his money making investments. I think that's why you see so many guys leaving in the height of their prime while they are still able to leave on their own terms. I don't blame them.
Part of the NFL rookie orientation now includes training on how to financially prepare for the future because it is time that is not promised to be spent in the NFL. If they just pay attention they will be clued into how fleeting an NFL career can be. Teammates are even discouraged from sticking a rookie with a high restaurant bill the first time they take him out to eat.

I have a friend that was in the NFL and I run into him every once in a while. He's younger than I am but walks like an old man because his knees are so bad. His shoulders, arms, hands and fingers are all arthritic. He has two small kids and I watch him struggle to pick them up sometimes. An interesting point Bennett made about coaches and players not being good people was echoed by my friend. He told me a few stories about some of the players he played with and afterwards I no longer look at them the same way.

I've interviewed a few NFL players, Rosie Grier, John Niland and a few others I can't remember. They can barely walk. They have hardly any cartilage in their knees. And then they're carrying all that weight too.

I agree with everything you said, I also want to add that a major point that he made is how hard it is to make money without football. It is hard to earn a living without football. I've been doing it for decades. I can't imagine going from making millions for part of the year to making thousands for all of the year. That would be a mind screw.

The sad thing about it is with just basic investment skills many of these players don't have to work any more, especially those who've made millions. Imagine making about $100 million over your career and not having a penny to show for it. :(

Of course, that's not the average NFL player but still if you hit $1 million, a conservative investment yielding 3 percent interest generates $30,000 a year. That's more than a lot of people make.

It's interesting to see the people who truly cannot and refuse to try to relate to something they have no concept of living through.

Today's player's are weak, just sayin'. Always look out for numero uno because life constantly changes, you have to roll with it or get rolled over.

Bennet is a loud mouth punk that never reached his full potential. Jealous of guys like Witten because they were simply better than him.
Don’t sugar coat it Roy. Tell us what you really think.

I appreciate Bennett sharing his perspective. There are a lot of guys who can't handle life after they hang up their cleats.
Junior Seau, Jovan Belcher and Greg Hardy come to mind.

"Football made me angry. Everything bothered me."

Probably why Cowboys let him go without much of a fight.

you can have a high IQ and be a complete waste of flesh. Bennett had the physical gifts to be a HOF player but never put in the effort. I read nothing insightful at all. What he said should be obvious to anyone with a moderate understanding of the world.

If he had invested his money, he wouldn't have to worry about working a job after football.
