People look to upcoming drafts to fix the defense. However, if you want to see how much a 2021 defense will improve, you have to look back at who they have drafted recently. The growth of recent draftees will go along way in determining if our 2021 defense improves, or stays at the same level.

With that being said, what kind of growth do you expect from some of defenders we have drafted in the last few years. Here is a list of guys still on the team

2018:
LVE
Dorrance Armstrong

2019:
Trysten Hill
Donovan Wilson

2020:
Trevon Diggs
Nevelle Gallimore
Reggie Robinson
Bradlee Anae

Reggie Robinson has the tools to be decent secondary piece and Anae can be a good pass rusher. I really want to know what Quinn thinks of these guys.
Robinson is lengthy, athletic and physical so he should fit. The question is will he develop. 0 defense snaps last season isnt a good sign, but it was a bad year to be a rookie too

Remember Wilson only got in the games because of injuries and bad play from the safeties. Just play the guy. Reggie should have been in the secondary during last 4 games of the season.

Outside of Diggs, Wilson, and Gallimore, I have no hope for anybody else on that list.

Anae or Robinson can prove to be contributors but that is far from certain. This defense is absolutely lacking talent. It has no more than 4 or 5 nfl starting defensive players, it's pathetic. Spend every resource in the draft and in free agency in adding 5 or 6 new defensive starters and we may be in business.

One thing Im optimistic of is TO production from Diggs and Wilson. Wilson actually tied for the NFL lead in FF by Safeties with 3

After struggling recently forcing TO's, it seems we are moving in the right direction
I like it.

Once Diggs gets some confidence in his own cover skills, hopefully coupled with the idea that FS will be upgraded, I think he can hit another level as far as being an interception guy.

I keep repeating myself on Wilson....he is a fine starting safety as long as the other safety is better than him.

That bona-fide centerfielder would help everyone else.....and exactly what you want out of a big ticket FA.....makes everyone around him better.

Non of these players nor future draftees matter due to the horrific coaching by Dallas's defensive coordinator (s).

It's a proven fact/stat.

I’m thinking any growth will mostly come from the guys who had a chance to get some snaps. LVE I think still will improve if he stays healthy.
Armstrong I don’t feel like he’s trending up at this point.
Hill again was limited with injury and think he’s trending up-we need him to!
Diggs is a starter this coming year no question.
Gallimore as potential-lots of..
Robinson hasn’t had a chance but think with a full off season will get more opportunities.
Anae i haven’t got a clue where he stands..

I do think we will go backward unless we do both draft defense and get a starter in FA

The only guys on that list who were good as rookies were Diggs and LVE.
That lends me to the fairly common expectation you get Rounds 1 and 2 to find day 1 impact defenders.
Get one after that and you are either luckier than Luciano or you let him develop a bit his rookie season and just ate your lumps.

THill was awful, then passable then injured.
Gallimore was awful than passable but healthy.
Donovan Wilson was toast then a playmaker.
Diggs was boom or bust then injured, then mostly boom no bust.
LVE was a stud then injured, then solid then injured, then mediocre then injured.

Rookies often need time but especially it seems defensively.
Harder to get them roles and not overexpose them.

This is why I'd be really happy to walk away with 3 defenders in the top 60 after trade.

Agreed.
Robinson has tools and Anae has collegiate production but in the most wacked out year the NFL has known since the replacement player year those guys couldn't get snaps.
It is especially bad for RR because we brought in street FAs and gave them snaps at CB.
Anae can at least point to Randy Gregory and say hey that dude came in and took what would have been my reps because he's just really good.

given a chance, we gonna find that Anae and Robinson can play and play well. We may well have our starting safety in waiting with Robinson

I have nothing except draft profiles hype to go with, but I'm expecting Robinson to show up. Still very curious why he didn't get any snaps, especially on special teams.

Got a feeling that the arrow is pointing up on the guys coming in in the last couple of years. Only thing that gives me pause is that the recent suckage on the defense can be laid at the feet of earlier arrivals who also had seemed like their arrows were pointing up.
