Are the Cowboys just a better defense away from being contenders?

We had a top offense last year with Dak and have secured our franchise QB and multiple weapons with a proven OL if it can stay healthy .

But what must improve is a defense which was statistically one of the worst in our franchise’s history

How much better does our defense need to be for this team to become more of a contender ? Will average be enough assuming our offense is top 5? Your thoughts !!

If this line holds up, then hell yes!!! All this team is missing is a legitimate defense to be a contender.

Top 10 would probably do it, but middle of the road and top 5 in turnovers might do it also. Have to be able to stop the run.

I think it has more to do with outside factors.

1. Win the East (should be easy although Washington is a QB away from owning the division.)

2. Avoid Rodgers ( We don't have an aswer for that guy)

3. Avoid NFC West teams (theyre just better than we are)

4. Stay away from Tom Brady in the poster (just a good general rule for every team)

So Wildcard weekend hopefully we play Washing or some other NFC East team.

Divisional hopefully play some NFC North team without Rodgers

NFC Championship we would most likely then face Brady or a NFC West team

Depends how much better that defense gets. Right now it's in the toilet. If they improve from basically rock bottom to being slightly below average, they'll be a much better team, but not Super Bowl contenders. If they improve to being just above average D, they'll likely be a playoff team, but without enough to win it all. If they become a top ten defense, then this team would be a SB contender, but that would be a MASSIVE (and pretty unlikely) improvement.

I think a good defense puts us in the mix, to get to that championship level will take player offense and defense to step up at critical moments in a game to put it away. So often in big games there will be that 1 big moment within a game where some one steps up and makes that critical play that breaks the back of the opponent, unfortunately we have been on the wrong side of those moments in recent times.

Sorry , I didn’t clarify. I didn’t necessarily mean SB contenders .

Contenders was a vague description.

I meant more can we win our division and possibly make a push in playoffs . Doesn’t mean we could win SB. I agree our defense would have to improve much more than it’s probably capable in one season.

We were lighting up scoreboards before Dak went down. I would think we would be even better this year offensively.

The defense cant be any worse... can it? All this new hungry talent cant help but make us better.

I always go into the season looking for an 11-5 12-4 season.

This year will be no different. Look at this year's opponents and tell me who is so scary besides the Chiefs? Nobody in our division is scary followed with Panthers, Raiders, new Orleans, Vikings, Pats..... BUT, that being said, you can never look at the schedule in May and think you know if those teams are going to be good or bad.

As bad as our defense was, and with The Red Rifle behind a constantly changing OL, we only won 6, but very easily could have won a couple more.

With the return of Dak and Jarwin and a healthier OL, our offense SHOULD score more points, which means another couple of wins. Our defense almost always lost the third down battles on opponent’s scoring drives in 2020, so common sense says if we win one or two of those battles each game, that’ll transfer into a couple/few more wins. Winning 2 or more games because of each side of the ball means 4 or wore wins, so yeah, a legit contender.

It won’t matter as we are not making the money playoffs.
6-11 record is what I predict.
