Teams usually have to overpay in a trade or to sign a FA.
Cowboys don't make many trades, just like most NFL teams.
Cowboys usually don't overpay for FAs. Was Deion the last big FA the Cowboys signed?
Cowboys usually overpay their players before they become FAs.

It may have all started after the 50 million dollar Brandon Carr experiment failed.
I think that's when Stephen forever tightened the purse strings on big free agent contracts.
Could be mistaken though.

To me I think the Cowboys are so afraid of making a big mistake in free agency, they are going to the far extreme in the opposite direction. Some quality free agent signings could have pushed this team over the top in past seasons but now we will never know.

All teams should build through the draft; but once in a while the opportunity crops up to get a cornerstone player on the open market as well. It could be argued that Dallas' decision to pay guys like Zeke, D-Law, and Jaylon Smith have hurt them in this regard as well; but that probably belongs in another thread.

The Cowboys have a terrible track record of hanging on to draft picks who are good players and paying them like elite players. They waste their solid draft record by not churning the roster and keeping salaries in check. They could then sign better talent in FA to fill holes.

Exactly. The overpaying of their own second contract free agents limits the cap for other higher tier FAs in the offseason. I think Stephen needs to go to some kinda middle ground negotiating tactics school for contracts.

All that can be hoped for is a fluke year from anyone not sick, lame, lazy or too old who settles for a vet minimum prove it deal.

And as has been the case, those type flukes rarely happen for this team.

So they are stuck with the Carlos Watkins and Brent Urbans of the world.

It is what it is.

The Cowboys last four seasons: 33-31 regular season, 1-2 in the playoffs, This is what they've paid handsomely to keep together?

Someone actually compared Dallas to the Chiefs. :muttley:

The Chiefs are 48-16 the last four seasons, 6-3 in playoffs and 1-1 in SBs. THAT is what you pay to keep together.
How dare you show these facts, great point thanks

All comes down to having a GM who is terrible at evaluating talent. The gift that keeps on giving!!!

I'm glad that Pappy has become a fan.....we got a steal in the draft with Dak, and I am glad that he has jumped on his bandwagon!
Dak and Zeke best buddies are exactly the two guys who will hold this team back from achieving anything more than mediocrity. I won't name all their faults, most already know - not to mention the obscene contracts for the talent level.
I'm having homemade eggrolls tonight! I'll never be a fan of these two. I'm a fan of the team. The video was totally spot on.
I'm a show me kinda guy and they haven't done that. All hype and expense thus far and stats - lots of which are arguably garbage time when playing from behind - which mean nothing unless it translates to wins.

Dak as a PR King knew from the get-go he had to befriend Zeke in order to finally receive what he wanted.......that unwarranted unearned PAYCHECK!!

1) Teams build through the draft.
2) The Cowboys have been drafting very well overall.
3) Usually have to overpay for trades and FAs. Cowboys don’t do this.
4) Cowboys often overpay to keep their players. Jerry is too loyal to players and fans. Yes, the majority of Cowboy fans wanted Dak, Elliott, Lawrence, et al at any price.

Chiefs would be nothing without Mahomes, Hill, and Kelce. All players they drafted.

One can talk Bills, Bengals, and Browns but they are not some super team. Let’s see where they are after they pay the QBs a second monster contract.

Right now, the Cowboys can compete with any team out there.
we have been drafting well offensively. not defensively. perhaps this past two drafts may change that a bit. we will see

Drafting BPA can lead to that. Drafting BPA is actually the best way to draft. Less reaching is better long term.
we drafted 45 defensive players from 2005 through 2019. I believe it was 54 offensive players......we hit on one impact player on defense. namely Lawrence. in the same period we had about 9-10 impact offensive players. so its not like we didn't draft defensive players, we just kept missing or gambling. Taco was BPA...or was it Watt? we missed that one. LVE...injury history, we drafted any way. Smith, Lee, Hill, etc. in the second round. missed on all (Lee, Smith injury prone). with that said, we drafted well offensively in all kinds of rounds. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc....

now, I left out 2020 and 2021 drafts.....its yet to be seen. we did focus defensively obviously.
