Is Micah Parsons not sound in the coverage department?

I haven’t watched preseason at all, but based on the excitement in this forum regarding MP, I’m a little excited. I looked at some clips from college, but I didn’t see much as far as coverage skills are concerned. I read some criticisms that he’s not sound in this department.

based on what you’ve seen in preseason, is this a sound assessment? Was there even enough to see from this point specifically?

well first off let me say hes not a Safety or corner , his primary job is to stop the run and rush the passer , when he is asked t cover wil be rb or maybe a tE..his speed and recovery skills are above average and should help him like if hes late trying to get out in converge..he looks solid to me but we will find out soon enough..

i will not be heavily judging him on his coverage skills as he should be doing that very often and will make the hof on his best skills.if he should live up to his expectations..

He’s playing time was definitely limited. But from what I have seen is more than adequate . I think he can compete with any tight end in the league

don't think it's been answered yet in his limited action. I also don't believe it's a strength of his, and one of the reasons Cox is getting a lot of love as well.

I am sure over time we will discover what his weaknesses are, but I don't think coverage is going to be one.

..oh man, Parsons is the real deal. Think Mack, Singletary, Urlacher ..etc. Except with few more tools, like speed and radar coverage.

All we know right now is he is a raw athlete.

He fell on a fumble and held a guy up for a tackle and we’ve put him in canton.

He is a blue chip prospect though 100% but if he can’t defend that pass in coverage or as a rusher then it’s a bad pick.

He is raw in coverage. Due to lack of experience. Wasn’t asked to do it a lot.

that being said. He has shown a lot of promise in coverage. Has the speed to cover RB’s and TE’s in man.

has the quickness to cover receivers in the short zones or that are dragging across the formation.

he had a few good coverage snaps in pre season. Including following a receiver across the middle in zone and closing the distance before the ball could get there.

I think we will see some mistakes and times he gets beat as he learns. But from a physical standpoint the ability to stay with guys and his explosiveness to cover ground in zone when the ball is in the air, are evident.

I would say that in obvious passing situations. He will be more valuable either rushing the passer or to spy QB’s.

I think about how many good “running” QB’s the league has now. Imagine a guy with Parsons size and speed spying QB’s like Lamar, Russell, Kyler, etc. I think he will be very useful in neutralizing that part of their game.

He wasn't brought in to be a coverage guy. He's a run defender and a rusher of the QB. We have other LBs for coverage like Jabril Cox.

I recall that pre draft, coverage was his concern. It is something he will have to learn as he gains experience.

He runs a 4.3.
He should at least be able to run stride for stride with just about any WR or TE in the league.

Bingo. Athleticism isn’t the end all be all. That being said. Having micah’s size and his speed and explosiveness gives him a major advantage when it comes to covering. He will frankly, have more room for error than most linebackers due to his athletic ability.

Micah Parsons is a destructive player in the middle of the field, that is extremely quick to attack the ball. He looks like a hungry pit bull going after a pork chop. He wiggles his body through the OL and blows up blockers. Plus, he would be a 10 sack a season guy, maybe more, if he was just rushing every play.

Whether he’s good in coverage is yet to be seen, because Penn State, and hopefully Dallas, want to play him to his strengths.

Agreed. Honestly if they let him rush regularly. I think Micah can get 7-8+ sacks a year.

I also think Micah would be a great OLB in a 3-4. If the cowboys ran that scheme.

Prior to the draft. Micah’s agent in an interview stated that quite a few teams running the 3-4 were scouting him and considering drafting him to play OLB
