Like most Cowboys fans, I’m excited about the defense’s ability to get TOs. It’s a huge reason we are 5-1. But if we are being honest without the fan glasses, our defense still has a very long way to go. Here are some areas we must improve if we’re going to have a serious playoff run:
  • We are 20th in the most important defensive stat: Points per game, giving up 24.3. Not terrible, but that needs to improve because the better teams we may face in the playoffs tend to be able to make your offense score less. We can’t depend on the offense alone to win games.
  • Our 6.3 yards per play is 29th in the NFL. (Without the 14 TOs we’ve had, we would all be talking about how we are still getting gashed for big plays)
  • We are ranked 28th in yards per passing attempt with 7.4.
  • We have 11 sacks, which is ok, but that ranks us 23rd. We could really use an improvement there.
Our defense is certainly better and still improving. I want to see us get better in the above areas and I will feel even better about our playoff chances.

Being the 3rd youngest roster in the league and with so many young players playing key roles on defense as well as significant players soon to return off IR, AND the fact that they are only 6 games into a new coordinator and scheme, you would expect the defense to play its best at the end of the year. Like that's not merely a fan's hope, it's just logical.

This team can win the Super Bowl this year, Robert. They just need luck like any other contender.

We need LB, a pass rusher and or a BIG BAD DT like the kid from Georgia, Jordan I think his name is, a WR, and 3 offensive linemen.
A coach. An owner. A quarterback and running back

No, we don't have a championship level defense, but more like the Saints one that won the Super Bowl. Great offense with a defense that is very opportunistic.

If your offense is scoring it's better to get beat hard and and get some turnovers than slowly give up scores drive after drive.

With a high powered offense, teams tend to have to go score for score. In that process they are willing to take more chances, which leads to more turnover opportunities

Nah brother.. that Packer defense in 2010 was 5 in scoring and 2 in yards. They were REALLY good.. Now the Saints were the ones who were 20th in scoring and 25th in yards but #2 in turnovers.. I think were like record good in defensive scores that year.. as evidenced in that Super Bowl..
And the saints were lucky enough to be up against Peyton Manning who never played all that well in a SB; or to be blunt not all that great in most playoff games he was in.

If you look at previous Super bowl champions you will find plenty of defenses that weren't dominant. Instead, they were opportunistic. That is, they created takeaways.

Most cowboy fans. Realize if you can keep the other team from scoring 27 points or less. You should be able to win some football game. I truly believe we have a championship offense. I do not believe we have a champion defense at this time. I still want a middle linebacker. Strong safety. Defensive tackle. Sure we are looking much better than we have in the past. I just don’t know if it’s good enough for a championship. . We’re getting there lol
Well stated!
Least we are better than last years abomination

Championship defense? No, not yet. Championship defenses don't get burned for 75 yard TD's against middle of the road teams with a rookie QB. The Dallas D made Mac look like a pro bowl QB in just his 6th start in his NFL career.
Yep!

Nobody expected the defense to be rebuilt in just one off-season. Another strong draft and some development can make it happen.
If we can repeat last year's draft that would be outstanding

Defensive takeaways not just about luck.

Impressive and eye opening data below.

"That defense's legacy (Saints 2009) will always be somewhat tainted by the bounty scandal (Payton and Williams were both suspended for a full season after the NFL found that players were rewarded for big hits that knocked opponents out of a game -- though all player punishments were eventually rescinded on appeal since there was no evidence they were targeting opponents with an intent to injure). But there is no denying how disruptive they were."

The NFL does not even let defenses play that way bounty or no bounty.

I agree. One year away.

The NFL has 32 teams now and there are no perfect teams. What’s the definition of a championship defense? If the definition is “good enough to get to a championship” then the answer is yes, it is, right now, today.

There’s no question in my mind that the Cowboys can win a championship this year. I don’t know if they will, but they can.

Another thing you have to realize is how the NFL has changed. How many teams do you see holding their opponents to under 20 points? Back when we were winning championships in the 90’s, that was common. Now? Less than half of games.

I love what Quinn has done. He’s not focused on yards or even points but turnovers. THAT is how you build a championship defense in 2021.

Dallas is currently 3rd in the NFL with +7. Not surprisingly, the two teams ahead are Buffalo and Arizona, maybe the two best teams in the NFL.

Great comparison to that Saints team. They did take the ball away quite a bit. Not sure Dak is as good as Drew yet but he continues to impress me every week.

They are quite similar, that yr I believe Darren Sharper had 9 interceptions, kind of like Diggs this yr.
