How much does home field advantage actually help?

So you travel someplace else to play a game. When the other team scores, everyone cheers. When you score, not that many people cheer. I can't see this really bothering any professional athlete. Of course, there is the crowd noise issue when your offense is out there, but most teams have mastered the silent count. Maybe greater familiarity with the field might be an advantage to some home teams, but is that really that big of a deal?

I don't see the home field advantage as being that great. I guess I could be wrong. Do you guys think it makes a big difference?

While the home field crowd at some stadiums definitely impact the game with noise, it’s also the travel aspect versus players sleeping in their own beds with no travel. Just an inconvenience that, combined with whatever advantage the home crowd offers, is worth about a field goal in ‘advantage’.

You are used to playing on the fake grass in a dome, now here you are on legit grass out in the cold something you aren't used to, yep big deal as is travel and time zones. Huge advantage playing at home that is why these teams try so hard to get that home field ........advantage~~~~

Sleeping in your own bed beats the hell out of planes, hotels, bus to the stadium, so much easier for the home team.

Not a lot. The value of home field advantage is negligible these days. Vegas used to give 3 points for home field..that figure is down to an average of about 1.5 points league wide..the absolute top stadiums in the league are only getting 2 or 2.5 points..home field is worth about 1 point for the cowboys - obviously below the league average

If home field didn't matter -in the regular season - you'd expect over the long term the win% for home teams would be very close to 50%. I guess if someone has a Stathead account they could check but I'd be very confident that over the long run home teams win% is above .500 by a statistically significant amount. I don't count playoffs in this because HFA is determined by better record.

Home field isn’t a huge advantage for the Cowboys. They lost a season finale elimination game to Philadelphia at home in 2013. They’ve had 2 number one seeded teams lose at home in the playoffs in 2007 and 2016. Two of their four losses this season were at home to a couple of mediocre teams. Their overall home record at the current stadium isn’t all that impressive. They opened up the stadium losing to the Giants. The Cowboys haven’t won a Thanksgiving day game since 2018. Some of their most embarrassing losses have been at home. So much for a home field advantage for the Cowboys.

Opposing teams love coming to AT&T Stadium and beating the Cowboys. It’s not an intimidating environment. Dating back to the final years at Texas Stadium home field hasn’t been a big advantage for the Cowboys.

The stadium has sounded loud ** on TV this year, in past years it sounded like a public library [at times]. It’s up to us (the fans at the stadium) to make it loud and hostile!!

I haven't actually checked the numbers, but I don't think it matters nearly as much now as it did in the 80s/90s. I used to be a heavy gambler back then, and home field was more important than who the better team was. Within reason, of course. Now it's hardly a consideration.

Crowd noise. Do crowds get loud anymore? I can hear the quarterback's cadence. That was never a thing. It used to be that his own teammates couldn't hear him. Go back and watch a playoff game from the mid to late 80s. The crowd noise is extreme. Today it's almost nonexistent. Is there some kind of technology blocking it out?

The Cowboys record at AT&T Stadium is 57-45. Not sure if that includes all the games this season. Their playoff record at AT&T is 3-1.

it helps alot but the team cant play flat

if youre down 21-0 the fans arent going to make noise

or if you have that thanksgiving game with 65 flags the fans will be more irritated

home teams are 91-98 overall this season. The value of home field is decreasing. It’s not gone entirely. Just not what it once was.

It's getting worse every year too, kind of sad. I legitimately hate that stadium and all it stands for.

Cowboys are 21-9 at home in the playoffs. NFL teams all-time are 334-163 in home playoff games, a winning percentage of .672.

That’s somewhat misleading because you don’t know what would have happened had they played the same team on their field
Keep in mind the home team had a better record during the season so obviously was the better team and likely would have won on the road too
If you took the best teams and put them on the road they likely would still win

During the season you are not playing based on wins or loses
Your just playing the schedule
During the playoffs the team with the better record plays at home so they should win more
Some stadiums are an advantage like GB because of weather
But overall if the best teams play the worst teams they would win about the same on the road
