McCarthy: 9 seconds on the clock

Was listening to a sound bite of McCarthy being directly questioned why he didn’t call a time out with 9-10 seconds left on the clock at the 8-yard line before the half.

Dak was staring at the sideline gesturing for the time out but never got the okay to do so.

Nine seconds is plenty of time to run a pass play into the endzone.

McCarthy’s explanation was “we wanted the three points.”

This is just another example of McCarthy being a mental midget with clock management. This was his reputation in Green Bay and we’ve seen it play out time after time this season.

You get sacked, no FG
You throw a pick, no FG
You kick the FG, yes FG

The offense was not doing good and our QB is not confident. I was happy with the 3 pts with a 12 point lead at half against a sorry *** giants team with 0 offense.

Yeah I was pretty pissed off. That said you could call time out and have it go sideways and lose 3. I personally thought it was a risk worth taking.

I've also noticed MM isn't as aggressive on offense now that the defense is balling and the offense stalling. We aren't going for it as much as before.

I am ok with his decision. Points were a premium at that time and in this game and wind. If he calls a timeout and Dak throws a pick or time runs out, people would criticize him.

McCarthy did not get greedy and, in hindsight, looks to have made the safe and correct decision.

Nope just like in L.A. they would rather kick an FG than trust Rayne to throw.......They have 0 confidence in him!
Hence the game plan dink and dak.
Did Prescott have a pass over 20 yards yesterday against an injury-riddled Giant Defense?

Why would a sack preclude a FG?

Does this hypothetical involve Dak running back to the 40 yard line?

His decision is defendable, take the three and don't over-complicate things for an offense that's struggling.

What isn't defendable though is the pure slop we're getting from the offense for nearly two months,,,, that's bad coaching.

I just read your OP that it was the 8 yard line. Sorry, I didn't know that. Yes you should definitely take the TO to throw into the RZ. But maybe McC wasn't confident in Dak and thought he'd throw a pick. But the fact McC has been highly questionable this season on time management I think he just brain farted.

You have a kicker that is missing chip shots. He missed 2 EP yesterday. I would rather save the 10 seconds and go for the TD first..

At least give it a shot, right?

It’s really an indictment on the lack of confidence in Dak and the offense. That said, I don’t even believe that. I think McCarthy is mental midget with TOs in his pocket and time to spare.

No, it was a good call by MM. It was explained in post #2. As I also posted about it in another thread.
Don't do a LAC at that point. Take the 3 points on the road right before half. Do not give the opponent a reason to go into half time with momentum on a failed TD attempt.

I agree with the decision. Under 10 seconds, there's no reason to take a chance on time running out. I understand that there are two ways of thinking here, that you could call the timeout and get one more play in. But I also think anyone holding this against McCarthy just is looking for things to hold against him.

I’m fine with it. It’s pretty obvious we wanted to play conservatively on offense knowing they wouldn’t be able to score on us.

He needs to hire a clock coach that stands directly next to him when they get within 5 minutes of each half.

yesterday, was probably the least egregious of them, but still not the right call. He lacks confidence in the offense, his defense is playing well, and the Giants offense is/was totally inept. Additionally, in the back of his mind was the total jailbreak in the red zone earlier in the game resulting in a sack. Having said that, a 3 step drop back and fade pass was the right call after a timeout with 10 seconds. He’s lost in a clock management, not the 1st coach or the last. There’s a handful in the NFL that actually manage it well.

I have no issue with the call there. I think you have to factor in who your opponent is when making these calls. Playing a team like the Giants all you have to do is not lose the game, which the Cowboys did. Take the 3 and move on. You throw a pick 6, take a sack, or have a boneheaded penalty that causes a 10 second runoff and you get nothing.

MM has shown a willingness to be aggressive in the past, but it tends to come out at certain times. When he knows he has the better team on the field he becomes a more conservative coach.

I don't love the call, but I understand it.
