What should be the penalty goal?

I suspect nearly everyone agrees that this team had way too many penalties this season. Given that it's next to impossible to play a game with zero penalties, what should be the goal to strive for? Would it be asking too much to expect this team to play each game with no more than two penalties?

Top ten in penalties.

Looking at 2021 the least penalized team was the Packers with 69. #10 was tampa with 97.

So 4-6 penalties a game would be nice on average.

Dallas had 127 penalties, good for 7.5 penalties a game

I agree with post #2. Two a game is asking for too much because refs can make that many mistakes alone.

Come to think of it, didn't we almost lose to the Patriots due to too many penalties? They also happen to be the only playoff team the Cowboys beat all year. How the hell did Dallas manage to win 12 games and avoid beating multiple playoff teams. Fascinating.

Eliminating pre-snap penalties would be a good start. No excuse for having false starts, illegal formations or delay of game.

Exactly, along with defensive players jumping offside.

There are always going to be some holding, PI, etc., during play, but there's no excuse for the pre snap nonsense.

No matter how impossible it is, the goal for the players and coaches should always be zero penalties. That way they don't get complacent and think it's okay to screw up. As far as what's acceptable? top five least penalized teams.

This!! You may just have to go old school and if it’s sloppy in practice…wind sprints. Put the pressure on. I’m sure the Connors would be taped to a goalpost after a few practices

The first suspect here is coaching, starting with MM. It is one buck that stops with him. It was clear almost from the beginning that the yellow laundry was falling at an alarming pace. No effective measures were taken. The players themselves. While some bad calls happen virtually every game, they do balance out in the long run, as the very close number of penalties against & in favor of Dallas indicates. What surfaced, especially against the 49ers, was an obvious failure of the Cowboys players to have self-discipline on the field.

Lack of discipline. Those are Jerry & Stephen. Why them? The unique structure of the Cowboys means that the players are not ultimately accountable to the coaches. Their retention by the team & even to an extent their place on the depth chart are determined by the owners, not the staff. That is a major flaw for Dallas.

Cowboys lead the NFL with a total 141 penalties on the season. League avg around 100 on the season. I would gladly take the league avg

Take half of Connor Williams penalties away - Is Dallas still in the playoffs with a home playoff game? Just food for thought - not a proclamation :)

How would you approach this as the HC?
Other than verbally harping on it, what are the other options?

Dallas had 127 last year. Even if you’re still top 10 in penalties, that’s a big improvement. Carolina was 10th at 107, nearly 20% fewer penalties.

Imagine just 20 less penalties: would have had a monumental impact on your season

Hard to say since why do guys hold to begin with? mostly because if they don't they are about to be beat by the defender. Right now Conner Williams and Tyler Biadasz are being pushed back and the results often time is holding. I do think G and C must be addressed

Get Colombo back as O-Line coach he is a throw back to the power and mean blocking style. Get the old hand and footwork back. These penalties on the line could have been coached and gotten better. This guy we have needs to go bye bye.
