I want to give them an 8 but I have to give them a 6.5. They are good, but when they don't get turnovers they are not stout enough to make a critical stop. Top defenses get 3 and outs when they need to get the ball back. That is not the Cowboys defense.

I would say the same thing about the offense. When they need that last minute drive to win the game the don't get it.

But, at the same time I would say both the offense and defense are really close to being great.

I would give them a 7. Outstanding at takeaways and much improved all around. Room to improve? Of course but headed in the right direction for sure.
a 7....we got turnovers, but gave up a lot of yards and allowed too many yards after catch. had trouble stopping the run at clutch times. suspect to outside runs.

From a 1 last season to a 7 this season was a great step in the right direction.

I would say a 6. It was a huge improvement from 2020 because of two things:
  • Micah Parsons is a stud.
  • They forced a ton of turnovers
The reason that I can’t give them a higher score is the big increase in TOs masked a lot of problems that still remain.

This defense has problems consistently stopping the run when they weren’t ahead on the scoreboard as evidenced later in the season and especially in the one playoff game. We also need more consistency in the pass rush besides what we generated from our stud rookie LB.

On the same page as you Bob.....I worry what we did well covered a heck of a lot of warts.

Exactly. One only has to read the stats for the linebackers to see that this defense wasn't all that...They were exposed in the game against San Francisco, unable to stop the run and an opening drive that was a terrible harbinger of how the game would proceed. San Francisco diced them up in short order. I think the secondary is a 7, the line a 5 and linebackers a 3. The lone exception is my abysmal grading of the line backers is Micah Parsons, of course, who earns a 9.

Yeah I hate to say it but this defense gave up a ton of big plays.
Parsons and Diggs stopped the bleeding on quite a few occasions and made this defense look much better than it really was

We were ranked #7 in scoring, #19 in yards and #1 takeaways. Even though we gave up yards, we didn't give up points and we got the ball back for the offense.
That's a solid B(8) and good enough defense to win a SB with.
It was. Now, if both units can function well the same season...

7th for points conceded, 1st for takeaways, 1st for scoring, and they got better as the season wore on.

I just don't see anything to complain out. Garoppolo had a QB rating of 67.4, The 49ers rushed at 4.4 ypc with Deeboo Samuel having a bit too much success but when it mattered, the defense put the ball in the offenses hands to win it and we couldn't
get it done. We lost the playoff game because the offense could execute, whether it was penalties, blocking, Dak/RB's not getting it done...whatever but the worst you can say about the defense was that they couldn't carry the offense by scoring themselves, IMO it was the best defense we've had in a decade.

9 Grading on a curve based on what we saw last season. They’ve exceeded pretty much all my expectations..

7 would be a straight up grade. Good defense that must depend on turnovers. Still have issues with stopping the run.

<<< 7.25 >>>

Comparison to last year. No one expected this magnitude of turnaround.

Now, let Quinn draft some peeps who really feel his tune. We could get into top 5 for 22'.

The defense appeared to get better as the year went on because playing the Commanders twice as they were sick and injury ravaged and the Giants and the eagles playing their second string made things look much better than it really was.

Look at how many yards this defense gave up.
This defense was saved by our young studs who got turnovers that negated the amount of yards this defense allowed.

That said you are 100% correct our defense gave the offense and opportunity to win that playoff game and they spit the bit.

If Jerry would just invest a high draft pick in a giant run stopper to anchor this defensive line our defense could be elite in not only turnovers but yards allowed

7, hopefully they’ll be able to generate more pressure up the middle with Galimore being completely healthy and OSA having a year experience and an off-season in a pro weight training program!

No need to get few NTs to help stop the run.
