No one has done anything note worthy without taking a chance. Tyler Smith is raw but putting him at LG will give him time to develope. Let's just hope he turns out to be everything they dreamed of when they drafted him.

Really his biggest problem when pass blocking is him placing his hands below his waist. If the coaching staff was smart they tell him to keep his hands close to his chest. Or force him to take boxing lessons.

Everyone cried when we drafted Travis Fredrick as well. You would think people would eventually learn they don't know what they don't know. I'm happy to give the kid a chance, and we have a track record to support the pick. I'll choose to be cautiously optimistic, for now.

That doesn't mean I have agreed with our FA approach to this point.

I'm happy to give him a chance too. That said, I disagree strongly with the choice.

Murphy's Law states that what can go wrong will go wrong. I think this applies to the Cowboys offseason and the 1st round tonight. The Cowboys had a weak division and dominated last year. Rather than take advantage of this and clean up weaknesses to make the draft easier in free agency, they sat on their hands and did next to nothing outside signing James Washington and Dante Fowler. This is despite having needs at OT, OG, DE, and positions the FO hardly ever addresses in 1T DT and S. Not to worry. There's always the draft right? Well, the rest of the division loaded up in round one while we only had 1. Then they got very solid players. Meanwhile, the Texans get Green and the Chargers get Zion Johnson. This leads to us taking a player in Tyler Smith who committed 16 penalties last year. Still plenty of picks to go, but I have a bad feeling about this season.
There are many reasons to have serious misgivings about this season.
I will pick the Cowboys lack of addressing the glaring holes on their Oline in free agency as the major one.
You never want to go into the draft with a pressing need.
It makes you have to reach for a position instead of going BPA.

We are watching the FO make compound mistakes. And it’s ugly.

1. They undermined MM and he is now effectively neutered as a HC
2. They decided status quo was the way to go with the coaching staff
3. They cut salary and failed to add any upgrades to the roster
4. They refused to touch the OL in FA telegraphing a OL selection at 24… and other teams ran circles around them
5. They painted themselves into a corner and had to reach for a raw, development player— who does have upside and talent— but also got flagged 16 times last year

Flat out poorly run FO. And don’t forget about the Jones family scandals, Kelvin Joseph’s train wreck , Dalrymple’s indiscretions, and Dak’s applauding fans for throwing bottles at refs. It’s been awesome! Cowboys!
A proverbial train wreck of an off season.
I think we may have just been passed by the Beagals as the best team in the NFC Least.

I agree with everything except #4. They were so bad in FA that there were lots of holes to fill and thus impossible to tell what they were going to do in the draft. Jones just proved they were smarter than everyone else.

Agreed. They went from going heavy in FA with little regard to the draft to the complete opposite. They need to be somewhere in the middle. At best, maybe 4 of your draft picks will be starters, most will probably be depth players, and a few will not make it past the practice squad. Thus, free agency should be mixed in. Plus, the fact that we are so quiet in FA means that we can't move up in the draft because we will not have enough picks to try to address other holes. I think the Cowboys should try to sign 2-3 big FAs a year, a few bargain deals, and the rest of the acquisitions should be in the draft. That would be somewhere in the middle. Signing a player like a Kam Chancellor would help us not have to force picks.

I'll counter with the fact that the oline was a very clear weakness in the game against the 49ers, and we lost 2 linemen to FA without signing FAs to replace them. So, I think @Hawkeye19 is actually correct in his assessment that we telegraphed that we were going to go oline.

Yes, now, I understand that our cap space was very limited this year. That said, they could have afforded one big signing if they wanted to do so. Besides, when we had the division by the throat this offseason, this would have been a great offseason to try to go all in. Instead, we've allowed this division to go from weak to very difficult. Thankfully, we have Dak who is still the best QB in the division. He and Parsons are the two saving graces we have this season in this division, and we are fortunate this draft is so pitiful at QB.

Other teams have the same cap we do, but somehow manage to obtain talent.
See Rams exhibit A.

he's one of the best run blockers in the class.
as long as he does his job...well....i could give a damn about the rest.
tyler smith was a solid pick because he's a really good player with a chance to be better.

Just as well if that's the case considering Philly just got Jourdan Davis
