Wanted to and calling it one of our two biggest needs are two different things. If we had to I'm fine with that group because Micah gets some snaps there on 3rd downs. So Lawrence and Armstrong are fine on run downs. Then in the nickel you have those two plus Micah, Fowler and Basham rotating in. I love the Williams pick and I always love upgrading our pass rush and i'm not saying it wasn't needed. I just think at DT, C, one LB and one CB we are starting weaker players.

Hope springs eternal here that Joseph is innocent and will push his way into the #2 CB spot on the other side of the polarizing Diggs.

If we played a game right now none of the guys picked start. Sam would get snaps as a pure rusher but very limited.

Massive upgrade at LG with Tyler Smith… that Smith & Smith left side is NO joke. The Cowboys turned around and picked up All-SEC and 3rd team All-American DE Sam Williams. I’ll be the first to say I really wish things worked out with Randy Gregory, but Sam Williams is 6’4, 265 pounds, and ran a 4.46 40 at the combine. Those are some freaky numbers. Dan Quinn could turn this kid into a household name.
Im with you Ultron. You can say they have the traits no matter what the humbugs say. First two picks have strength and athleticism. It’s an NFL holiday and Im not one to waste a opportunity to celebrate

I appreciate the optimism and I hope the players we drafted can be upgrades. But here's how I see it at the moment.

OL: Lost 2 starters and replaced with 1 so we're still behind here. Sans the penalities Connor Williams was solid in pass protection, while run blocking wasn't a strength. I would hope Tyree Smith is an upgrade, but he had his own penalty issues and probably not fair to assume he's an instant upgrade quite yet. Terrance Steele isn't better than Collins, but he wasn't 10 million better. We should still look at adding a veteran.

I agree with most of your post, but I believe Steele is a better RT than Collins. Collins was a good guard, but was horrible at RT. Why they didn't move Collins to LG and leave Steele at RT is a mystery. I suspect Collins refused to move back to guard. Collins and Gregory where both knuckleheads, I'm glad they're gone.

How is Smith considered an upgrade? We haven't seen him play in the NFL and he is literally a penalty monster which was the major problem last year and indicates to me that he sucks because why would you commit penalties unless you are having trouble with your blocks? This is crazy.

Let’s see them play at the NFL level before popping the champagne.
You can say that about every draft pick. I see the Ravens are the big winners so far. They drafted a big slow safety, a undersized center, and a gimp at defensive end. At least that is how Cowboys zone would have reacted if we were the Ravens.:facepalm:

Smith should prove to be an upgrade in a couple of years unless he is unteachable. It is doubtful that Williams end up being an upgrade over Gregory.
You mean Gregory’s 16.5 sacks over 7 years? Hell, if he can just stay eligible to play he should be an upgrade.

how did we upgrade? because he is new?....we complained about Williams, because he had so many penalties. here comes smith, who had 16 IN COLLEGE in ONE SEASON against INFERIOR competition that tulsa plays. how is that an upgrade, plus every scouting report says, the guy is raw and needs a lot of technique work...how is that an upgrade? we drafted a project in the first round.

Sam Williams is not better than gregory. DEs are so hard to project to the NFL. so until he gets at least one sack, or even gets to start, we didn't upgrade.

It's pretty obvious Quinn wanted Sam Williams all along. He gave him a private workout and he's been linked to the Cowboys since then. Guy knows what he needs for this defense.
As evidenced by the butt whooping they took on the ground in the playoffs lol. Let’s draft the guy who stinks against the run and has off field concerns. Awesome

Eagles, Giants, Cowboys all went Oline+Dline with their first two picks. Exactly the value you want out of the top of the draft.

Our problem is that the FO is literally creating these 'needs' by letting players go and using the draft to replace everyone or by signing 'bargains' from other teams in free agency. Expecting year after year of rookies to come in and replace the performance of seasoned NFL vets is laughable. When an elite talent drops, you can occasionally get away with it like a Ceedee or a Micah, but there's a reason why we aren't winning playoff games. You can't have huge holes that you just fill with rookies because it takes rookies usually at least a year to acclimate to the league. These guys we just drafted don't really look like 'elite talents' to me, so I don't really expect Tyler Smith to be that much better than the linemen we let go if at all. Same with Sam Williams. Not sure how much better Williams will be than Randy Gregory. Realistically, a lot of these rookies should be able to ease into the league and not expected to come in year 1 and be a significant difference maker.

This is like the 2018 draft in a way.

They have Smith to replace Williams, though rounds flipped.
Then Tolbert in the 3rd as Gallop was.
Then Williams at DE, though LVE was that year. But he replaces Gregory.

This was also when the selected Schultz, so will they go TE in the 4th.
Mike White at QB in the 5th, so will the spend one of them on a QB.

Yeah we saw Dak without a number 1 already. It was ugly. And that’s being nice.

Considering Alan Hurns was the best receiver that year prior to the arrival of Cooper, it's not surprising why the offense sucked.

Adding Williams to Parsons gives us crazy athleticism for our pass rush.

Smith never played a snap at guard in college so it may appear we’ve gotten better but it’s far from being obvious
