With all due respect (or unless I just don't know some of the guys listed), the chart doesn't really tell much.
Ware and Miller are the standouts. The others either too young or .. blah.
You need to look more closely.

That list is loaded.
Multiple Pro Bowlers (nearly half--6 of 14--of those that have played in the NFL already)
I could only find 2 players that have played in the league at least 1 year that would not be worth the 56th pick.

How well does the straight line speed of a 40 yd dash translate?
They say it doesn't as much as some. I noticed one of the explosive measurements (vertical) was not great, but another (broad jump) was.

I like his chances to be well worth pick 56, but we'll see if its beyond that.
He has huge upside with some polish

I don't want to interject negative thoughts. His results seem impressive enough. It's just that, watching the tape, he looks a bit stiff, with a gradual change of direction. It could just be those particular plays that stood out to me.

those saying sams reach and risk might be correct, but you best say like others Walker at #1 wasn't a reach on projected talent, there were better day 1 talent available that could stat game 1 but they chose walker? much like Clowney should have never been #1 was a total reach. Top 10 yes #1 no but sam at 56 or wherever we took him is better risk then taking player #1 overall with question marks. Guys got talent 1st rounds type skillset so worth the reach IMO

Your eyes aren't totally deceiving you.

I'm not sure he knows what plan of attack to take at times and his indecision hurts him.
But Quinn is the man to help with that.

They do say he has the heaviest hands of all the 2022 edge rushers, so he can fight through some things.
More power than some of the guys with slightly better short-area quickness.

I really like his chances to eventually help us.

As with most of these kids, they have gotten by on athletic ability alone. Once he understands the game, I'm confident he'll be fine.

A lot of good players on that list. 30% of the players are in this year's draft. I think the league is just getting faster. When Demarcus Ware came out, not many OTs were running sub 5 second 40's. Not taking away from this chart. Speed still kills. I am optimistic about Williams based on his production in college.
Many more players have speed coaches now because the value the league puts on that in drafting. Michael Johnson built a business on that in Plano.

Big guys didn't like to run, didn't really see the need for it but then it became about a better paycheck.

Exactly.

They train for the combine now, knowing it means dollars....whether the faster time truly translates on the field or not.
But training is really more sophisticated now.
I suspect a rookie D-Ware would run a full tenth of second faster in 2022

It was 36" at his proday. The article on him says he dunked his elbow in the net in high school.

If you think he looks stiff, did you see Drake Jackson?

What this list shows is SEC production combined with elite measurables.
Williams didn't just run a sub 4.55 he blew away the 40 with a sub 4.5
And he didn't do it at Randy Gregory's 235 pounds but at 261 pounds.

I don't see him having that bend and low center of gravity you'd like but the guy is dead quick the one Dallas defender he looks most like might be Micah Parsons. He's just fast as can be and of really good size.
Dallas is simply REALLY fast up front now. This guy is essentially Randy Gregory's replacement. He's a pure edge with great speed. He has to get stronger and add to his pass rush toolset but he comes in with the ability to flat run to the ball day 1.

Fans are irate but Dallas getting better in the trenches on both sides of the ball is smart drafting. Then you go get a WR in r3 where value meets utility.

The athletes are getting bigger, stronger and faster
Also passing at thh he e college level has increased so they have more passing down reps so that sure doesn’t hurt

100% agree that metrics alone justify a high draft pick for Sam Williams. He was consistently productive in the SEC and smashed every translatable athletic test for a DE. But on the field, I think there is a bit of projection to his game.

Quinn wants his RE to be a pure speed-rusher rocket. Williams didn't do a lot of outside-shoulder speed rushes at Ole Miss, and wasn't especially comfortable when he did. He looks like 4.7 fast rather than 4.48 fast on film, and he didn't have elite bend to run the hoop. He won more as a power rusher in college, but he's not really going to overpower pro tackles.

The metrics say he projects towards a speed rush role, and that's why athletic testing is an important part of the process. It shows you things the tape might not. But I'm not completely sold.

He has one of the quickest first steps in this class and many scouts note that. Thats how he gets so many bull rushes. He also has insanely good 1 cut quickness which he leveraged play after play.to get pressure.
This guy has sacks versus Alabama and Miss St who just sent OTs into the top 10 of this draft.
I know zero of his off-field stuff which sound like a red flag but his tape is very very good. 16 TFL, 12.5 sacks as a SEC edge playing both RDE and LDE?? Hard to beat that production. In fact it looks almost identical to J Clowney's who went 1st overall.

He does play too high for a guy that's 6'3". He rushes a lot like Micah, 1 step, plant and go.
