When's the last time Dallas cut a draft pick outright?

I get that it's easier to keep them now with the larger practice squads, but I was trying to think of draft picks we've cut and I've been coming up empty.

All 11 guys from last year's draft are still on the team.
Everyone from the 2020 draft actually played snaps for the Cowboys. (Two are now gone.)

Ah, I think I found him. Jordan Carrell, 7th-round DT in 2017, was the last draftee who was cut outright (not put on IR or the practice squad).

The last guy who was picked before the 7th round? I don't know; I got tired of looking.

So I guess we'll be seeing all these guys for a while.

Did they cut Bradley Anae from the practice squad or was he sign off the PS by the Jets? I know the Cowboys cut him and signed him to the practice squad. Does that count? Anae was drafted in the 5th round in 2020.

Anae played for Dallas for two seasons before the Jets signed him off the practice squad. I'm thinking about guys who never made it out of their first training camp.

There isn't many.

Not sure if they kept both Jacksons from round 5 in 2019 initially. I think the DB was cut after camp but I could be wrong.

Maybe Ryan Russell from 2015. 5th round.

This could cut two ways though.....it suits the 'draft well narrative, but maybe part of that is our roster isn't exceptionally tough to make.

Generally I'd say most teams give their high picks the benefit of the doubt in year one.

Looks like 6th rounder Marquez White in 2017 and 5th rounder Danny Coale in 2012 didn't make the team. Not sure if they went to IR or PS.

I'm pretty sure we did a double with Marinelli two linemen that he was fist-pumping about getting late in the draft around 2018. Forget their names

I think about this sometimes too. It does feel like we used to let go of draft picks much more in previous years. I don’t know if that’s because the PS becoming such a mainstay now, better drafting/scouting/facilities, or just the reality of parity and teams having to depend on the draft for depth no matter what now - but yes, for at least our team, much different reality than it used to be. I think about it because one of those things that made Jimmy so great was he was known as someone who would cut anyone not a superstar if you screwed up. Feels like everyone is guaranteed something now.

It has not happened as often as it’s used to. Here are some fairly recent draft picks that never played a single down of regular season NFL football we eventually had to cut- all are no longer in the league.
  • 2017- 6th round CB Marquez White, 7th round DT Jordan Carrell
  • 2015- 7th round T Lawrence Gibson
  • 2014- 7th round LB Will Smith, and 7th Round DE Ben Gardner
  • 2012- 4th round S Matt Johnson, 5th round WR Danny Coale
  • 2009- almost the entire draft was out of the league in two years. Worst draft in team history.
Since Will McClay became a major voice in the draft, this hasn’t happened as often.

I assume you're talking about cutting guys in the year they got drafted? If so, they cut Mike Weber in 2019.

In any case, it doesn't strike me as unusual for that to be rare. Team's know even top draft picks have room to develop and improve once they get to the NFL, and lower draft picks may have even more room for growth, even if the ceiling isn't as high. It seems natural for any team to want to give a rookie a year or two of development before deciding their fate.

Weber was on the practice squad for the whole season. Pretty sure nobody mentioned in this thread so far was just cut loose their first year.

Yeah, I don’t know how unusual it is, I just realized I had this impression that was incorrect, that a decent percentage of late-rounders just wash out in TC every year.

Yea, the Cap has changed how we manage these lower round picks. Many of them used to be cut. But now we rarely keep any past Rookie contracts so we are constantly churning our bench which is made up mostly of lower round picks and Undrafted FA as their Rookie contracts are cheaper than any veterans we might have wanted to retain mostly as backups and special teams .

Good ole Matt Johnson.....wow. We waited a long time for that seed to sprout. Turned out to be a weed.

Bo Scarborough didn’t make the team
