When they said they did an anterior fusion I assumed neck also. But then I have seen several references saying it was his back but I had never heard of an anterior procedure to the back....seems like it would be so much more complicated with all the organs but apparently it is a thing. I'd love to hear definitively what level it was.
Again - According to the article, he "ditched his neck brace by mid-April". Unless he had two procedures, I think that clarifies it for us.

He was accused of sexual battery and suspended in college. It was an accusation and he was cleared but it does put his character into question. Just because he was cleared doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, it means it couldn’t be proven. It did cause him to fall in the draft. Jerry spent at least 15 minutes during the Cowboys post draft press conference having to answer questions about his character.
I thought that was our 2nd rounder.

What exactly does that mean? Us dumb guys have no idea.
It means they go through the front of the neck to do the surgery, instead of the back. Maybe less chance of nerve damage and less cutting through muscle?

Good use of one of those 5th round picks. Instead of using a 2nd round pick as usual.

I wonder if he was a target more so then Dean, that many wanted in the 2nd round. He too may miss time this season. Eagles used what a 3rd round pick. Which the usuals slobbered over.
I would have been ok with a 5th on Dean. So maybe they were waiting for either one to drop into the 5th. Good strategy if true.

i mean one was the best lb in the nation, doesn't look to be missing any time and didn't have his spine fused together. i'm excited for clark, but there's a pretty clear distinction

A mere 5th round, late round pick on a guy with that kind of size/speed ratio, and productivity at a big school competition conference, i'll gladly take that low risk/high reward.

Not like it's a high 2nd round pick ala Jaylon Smith.

agreed but they are totally different players and situations...Jaylon would have been a top 5 pick pre a devestating injury, Clark was a 2nd - 3rd rounder pre surgery and didnt have a devestating injury persay.

The risk on Jaylon to the reward potential matched at that point in the draft given our DR did the surgery (i think), and the risk reward on Clark also matched at that point in the draft (actaully might end up being a better value).

I still dont have any issue with Jaylon Smith pick, just too bad the reward never really came

Was this cervical or spinal fusion surgery? They are not the same.
exactly. I had the cervical fusion in 2001. I have a titanium plate in my neck on 1 level. It was at C5-6. I wish I hadnt had it at all. I retired at a young age from work because of it. That said, Im not an elite athlete. Praying the kid recovers fully, football aside.

Nope just ate up a bunch of cap space and burned yet another of our 2nd round picks in the last 10 years.

My range of motion is sketchy with my neck. I have tingling and numb spots down my right arm and hand. I have muscle spasms and my grip is lacking. This is all due to the neuropathy from my neck fusion surgery back in 2001. Everyone reacts differently from this , as for me, its been an up and down journey. I worry for the guy because he is a linebacker. Leading with his head is kinda in his job description. Not like a QB that has had this surgery.

I worry about his ability to walk, never mind playing linebacker on the biggest stage in the world.

All it takes is for the neck to get tweaked and the kid is done. Necks are a fragile thing. The nerves in there control organs, arms, hands, range of motion.

My best guess it that it was ACDF surgery (Payeton Manning had this done). This typically has the neck brace off quickly and a nine-month recovery which would fit the timelines. If this is what it was then the big risk for him is that the disk at the level above or below the fusion would be under a bigger load and carries an increased risk of damage. I suspect he's gonna have to be smart and leave the game before he can't play anymore but for millions of dollars and the ability to keep playing the game I love, it's probably a risk I would take.

i hear ya, but speaking from experience, all the $ in the world wont help him if he takes just a awkward hit to the neck. Manning played QB. He didnt have the same risk.

No argument from me on this one. But a 21 y.o kid isn't gonna make the decision someone that has lived it and understands the full weight of the decision would.
