21 year olds are brash and tend to think they're invincible. They lack the maturity and wisdom an older person would have. Why I believe medical professionals should do more to help them make the right choice, in this instance it's probably to walk away from football and pursue a different interest.

Actually, being a bit more sinister, I think the smart decision would be to take the 650k salary and spend the full season recovering. He can retire at the end of the season with a house paid off and all his medical bill covered by the Cowboys.

Could be and it could also be that he wasn’t wrongly accused. Whatever happened he better hope it never happens again. There’s some concern with him or he wouldn’t have fallen in the draft.

The team said they did their research and were satisfied. But we do know how that has not panned out before.

They always say they did their research and are satisfied. What else are they supposed to say? It really hasn’t worked out with any of these players. Not saying it won’t work out with Williams but we’ll just have to see.

No clue about this type of surgery......will it impact his career?

https://www.si.com/nfl/2022/05/03/maqb-deandre-hopkins-future-in-doubt-after-suspension

• While we’re there, LSU’s Damone Clark was another player whose stock plummeted over the last few months for medical reasons. Doctors at the combine caught a back issue when he told them of problems he’d had with stingers, and it was determined that he should get disc fusion surgery. At that point, Clark was expected to be drafted on Friday night, somewhere in the second or third round.

But the back surgery may knock him out for his entire rookie season, and that was enough to knock him all the way down to the fifth round, where Dallas scooped him up.
I heard it’s the same as Moose got
And he continued his career

agreed but they are totally different players and situations...Jaylon would have been a top 5 pick pre a devestating injury, Clark was a 2nd - 3rd rounder pre surgery and didnt have a devestating injury persay.

The risk on Jaylon to the reward potential matched at that point in the draft given our DR did the surgery (i think), and the risk reward on Clark also matched at that point in the draft (actaully might end up being a better value).

I still dont have any issue with Jaylon Smith pick, just too bad the reward never really came

- Cowboys are still taking heat for gambling such a high draft pick on someone with such a horrific injury to add with a extremely lengthy recovery period.
Mind you that was not your common ACL injury, ala Conner Williams, Blake Jarwin – that was nerve damage.
We don’t see or hear about that kind of severe injury degree from big name players around the NFL.

- Just as you said, at that time Cowboys had the actual medical surgery specialist who actually performed the surgery on Jaylon’s knee
so they felt they had as much inside information. as any team, thus an even greater urge to gamble on Jaylon.

- Yes because he was a top 10 overall talent pre-knee injury, that was the huge incentive to pull the trigger.

- My question is because of Jaylon’s scenario, is there a new direction or philosophy on avoid spending on such high picks on red flag medically injured players ..period,
in regards of injury,.. ala Georgia LB and Butkus winner Nacobe Dean or Michigan edge rusher David Ojabo, Michigan (achilles tendon tear)

I'd liked to look into the severity of Moose's neck fusion.. vs Damone Clark's case.

Was Moose's case a much higher, more severe degree than Clarke and LVE ?

Didn't LVE eventually had to have neck fusion surgery as well ?
Can we assume it was a far lesser degree than Moose ?

Moose had a shortened career partly because of that neck. I think he plays 2-3 more years if not for that.

I will say this much, surgical technology has come light years since when Moose and myself had the cervical fusions. Its possible Clark may make a near 100% recovery.

Who did LVE's fusion?

Maybe not use that doctor.

Who knows
But the cowboys doctor discovered it
It’s fairly common so for you are me the odds of real success is probably really high. A nfl LB is a different story
But a 5th round pick for the chance we can get even 4-5 good years out of him is well worth it
The talent is worth the risk

According to the article, I say he's back by October.
Whether the Cowboys lets him play depends on how the team (defense) is doing at that time.

Why? His neck was fine last year. LVE looked like he either didn't trust it or he was just adjusting to the new defense but either way he improved a lot towards the end of the season.

Was this cervical or spinal fusion surgery? They are not the same.

Spinal I think, perhaps clitoral. Not colonish my inside sources informed me. Get it..? Inside sources?! Like poo...lolz

In the name of science!

He was accused of sexual battery and suspended in college. It was an accusation and he was cleared but it does put his character into question. Just because he was cleared doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, it means it couldn’t be proven. It did cause him to fall in the draft. Jerry spent at least 15 minutes during the Cowboys post draft press conference having to answer questions about his character.
Just because he was accused doesn't mean he did it either. Woman cry rape sometimes to get their way... not all of them...but some. Charges were dropped and people want to convict him. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

He put himself in a position to be accused. Whether he did it or not we’ll never know. They mentioned on NFL network that he’s had other issues besides that but didn’t go in to details. Concerns about his character keep coming up. All I know is he better never be accused of anything again. He better be very careful who he associates with. Nothing has to be proven for the league to take action, we found that out with Zeke.

exactly. I had the cervical fusion in 2001. I have a titanium plate in my neck on 1 level. It was at C5-6. I wish I hadnt had it at all. I retired at a young age from work because of it. That said, Im not an elite athlete. Praying the kid recovers fully, football aside.
I had an ACDF at C4/5 and C5/6 with corpectomy at C5. It turned out pretty well for me, but that’s because my spinal cord was being crushed by the two disc protrusions. I regained the lost function in my arms and legs.
