He's the 56th pick, so on-field production like Gregory is a fair expectation, without all the suspensions hopefully. It would be great, though, if he outperformed Gregory's production. But I'm trying to be rational.

We can hope for a rookie year like Olujari's with the Giants (50th pick, 8 sacks), but it might be more like Carlos Basham Jr. (61st, 2 1/2 sacks). The previous year, four DEs were taken in the second round. Only two had more than six sacks their first two seasons (with 6 1/2 the best).
The Giants might have a really good defensive line, Olujari gave Tyron some problems in the first game last season against the Giants. We may have the worst defensive line in the division. I think the Eagles defensive line is overrated. As much as I like Davis (Mountain of a man), his stats are underwhelming. He could be a big bust plus the Eagles have no all pro or pro bowl defensive linemen last season. They have a bunch of good players but no stars. When I compare him to Gregory I am talking about Sam’s four year career in Dallas. Next season he just needs to earn some snaps in the rotation.

Yeah, it will be disappointing if he has a Gregory career. We will see in training camp. Nobody saw Parsons as this devastating pass rusher until we started hearing practice reports.
I really wanted Parsons in the draft but never expected him to be as good in pass rush. Speed is only a small part of it, getting off blocks is something he does much better than I expected

I'm just saying second-round picks are a mixed bag. What we got from Gregory when he played wasn't bad for where we picked him. Let's go back to the 2019 draft since that will be four years. Breeland Speaks was taken with the 46th pick. He's now with us, having had 1 1/2 sacks so far in his career. The only other DE taken in the second round was Tyquan Lewis at 64. He has 8 1/2 sacks in his career. In comparison, Gregory's 16 1/2 sacks so far, essentially in a little less than four years worth of games, look like a gold mine. Of course, we're hoping for Frank Clark (53.5) or Markus Golden (44.5) type numbers. I just don't want to be unrealistic in my expectations.

I remember the Frank Clark and Gregory debate. Seattle was going to pick the one we passed on.:facepalm:

At the time, I thought Gregory was the better choice characterwise. He had the marijuana issue, but Clark had domestic violence and home invasion charges hanging over his head. He did get arrested last year on firearm charges, but has kept his nose pretty clean otherwise.

Can't say I was necessarily pulling for us to draft either guy, though. Knowing what we know now, we could have traded down into the early third and taken Danielle Hunter (60.5 sacks) who went with pick No. 88.

Micah Parsons is the chosen one. So it’s unlikely Williams will be on his level.

that’s ok though. Williams is still an explosive DE and has a ton of physical ability.

My personal opinion is it's a mistake to compare anyone to Micah Parsons.

I really like the Williams selection but Parsons is special.

Honestly, this thread is borderline blasphemy.

Yep and i'm so glad the thread wasnt hijacked from those demeaning picking Sam because "he no Micah".

We liked him so much that we potentially took him early as: 1) we didnt think the off field induced drop would see him fall all the way to 88.....2) we liked him a lot 3) we could see that with Micah and DLaw we needed someone that may be given less attention, with a skill set that's built on speed (interestingly a Combine speed that indicates he's much quicker than Johnson ll)

The thing that gets me with Parsons is how stupidly explosive he is within a couple yards of the ball. He closes at rocket speed. It's like another gear all together. I'm super excited to see Williams, but I don't expect anyone can close quite like Parsons.
Oh of course that’s crazy to expect. But if he can learn beating his man enough to pressure. That’s a win

Do you feel Sam Williams has the closing speed similar to Micah Parsons rushing the passer? He seems to close the gap quick.
Ummm....No.

Nobody has Parsons' speed to the QB.

I'm a fan of drafting Sam Williams and he is fast, but not Micah Parsons fast.

Closing speed? Maybe, but it's hard to say until you see him against similar competition. I just feel at this point making any comparison to Parson's is very premature.

You can’t compare football performances with Parsons who was just ridiculous in the Cotton Bowl and that turning out to be an early indicator of what he can do in the NFL.

You can however compare the athletic profile though. In terms of numbers:
  • Parsons vs Williams:
  • Weight: 246lbs vs 261lbs
  • Length: 31 1/2 vs 33 1/8
  • 40 yard: 4.39 (Pro-day) vs 4.46 (4.38 pro-day)
  • Vert: 34” (pro-day) vs 32.5” (36” pro-day)
  • Shuttle: 4.34 (pro-day) vs 4.33 (pro-day)
  • 3 cone: 6.89 (pro-day) vs 6.93 (pro-day)
  • Bench: 18 (pro-day) vs 25 (pro-day)
  • Broad Jump: 126” (Pro -day) vs 123” (pro-day)
I think it’s pretty clear that both are elite athletes but that Williams tested much better if you do an apples to apples comparison (pro-day) and the factor in weight.

Exactly. It’s not a fair comp. Parsons shows elite speed. He might be a freak.

Yeah I have super high hopes for Williams, but I've never seen a player close with the speed and explosion Parsons brings. He's real special, like potentially a generational talent.
