WR JALEN TOLBERT, DALLAS COWBOYS

CeeDee Lamb is expected to solidify his WR1 standing this year in spite of a few unknowns around him in the Cowboys’ receiving room. Michael Gallup may not be ready for Week 1 while still recovering from an ACL tear, leaving the position of Robin to Lamb’s Batman up for grabs.

Dak Prescott’s deep connection with Gallup (95.5 grade on deep passes in 2021) could be taken over by the rookie Tolbert, at least early on, or semi-veteran James Washington. Tolbert had five receiving touchdowns on 20-plus yard passes en route to his career-high 98.2 deep receiving grade at South Alabama last season. The third-rounder boasts the upside to come in and hold down the WR2 position while remaining a mainstay in the Dallas passing offense once Gallup returns.

As a rookie, Gallup totaled 33 receptions, 507 yards and 2 TDs. In his first six games, he had 1 reception in five and two in the other. His seventh game was his "breakout" with three catches for 81 yards. He didn't have more than three catches in a game until his 13th game. His true breakout didn't happen until the playoffs, where he caught six passes for 119 yards against the Rams.

It's nice to think that Tolbert can take over that "deep connection," but it took a while for Dak to establish one with Gallup, and we really shouldn't expect more out of Tolbert.

I would love to see this. But I don’t think it’s realistic to expect this kind of performance immediately. IMO Tolbert will probably take at least half a season to develop into a reliable NFL receiver. His competitive opponents at S. Alabama weren’t exactly the SEC. He played against teams like Bowling Green, Arkansas State, Appalachian State, Louisiana-Monroe and Jackson State to name a few.

Not saying he isn’t talented. But the secondaries he faced in college were 99% of the time not full of NFL talent. He has lots of upside. But he will need some time to get used to NFL corners getting physical with him and how to adjust routes in certain situations. I expect him to have 30-40 receptions next year with the majority coming after mid-season.

CeeDee will do a great job this year as our 1WR. He's not the weak link in the WR room. With Gallup out at the start of the season, veteran, James Washington will be our 2WR to start the season. We'll quickly see what kind of weapon he can be. This leaves our rookie. Jalen Tolbert as our 3WR and slot specialist. Don't forget about Noah Brown and T.J. Vasher. They will be contributors to this coming season's passing attack.

Hopefully, Tolbert comes along quickly. Dak likes the windows wide open, so the rookie better prove himself fast.

Tolbert seems to be a very talented WR prospect. He's likely to get an abrupt introduction into the world of WR replacement for Gallup, while he recovers from his ACL mishap. No doubt but what Dak will be charged with the task of getting Tolbert ready to be in sync with him. Good luck with that, fellas!

I'd be willing to bet we're all chomping at the bit to tune in to training camp in the weeks ahead. There's definitely going to be a large grouping of newbie players trying to get integrated into the Cowboys' system. Tolbert will be one of those souls attempting to get off to a flying start during that period of their training. He'll be closely watched by the staff and the team's many fans, also. Tyler Smith will be another to command attention. I can't wait to see all the new faces to be on display for their training. Here's hoping the staff gets 'em ready to play for real -- fun times lie ahead.
There'll be scads of new C'boys to get acquainted with. It'll be fun!

This is great optimism and of course I hope it's true. But when I think of breakout seasons, I think of a player that either flashed at times in his rookie season, or his second season. Diggs is the perfect example. This year I'll be watching Osa.

I think James Washington is brought here to fill the initial long throw and catch routes, ( a la Gallup ) and Tolbert needs go fill in Amari’s role to be reliably in position to catch the ball consistently, big shoes to fill.

Lamb will be still used in the slot , since that is where he shines and he can produce YAC after the catch. But Dak has to hit him in stride and let him hangout to get punished.

just my .02

I look forward to Dak throwing to Lamb late/behind on the slant and folks blaming him for not catching it (“he’s gotta help Dak out!”).

I'm hoping Tolbert displays an ability to catch consistently in pro ball. In college, he had the occasional drop. He was the team's longball specialist there, which renders the inaccurate throws (and dropped passes) more commonplace than the shorter routes. Let's see if he and Dak can connect well. It's no secret that Dak and Gallup had a fair number of drops between them. It'll be intriguing to see how well Dak and Tolbert fare in TC. I wish 'em success.

I know a lot of fans are not high in Noah Brown, but he is a good 3rd/4th receiver to have on our team. He has very good speed( announcers have confused him for CD at times ), he is a dog( aggressive, tough, and blocks well )and I think he is going to become more comfortable in our offense( he’s now been in it for a few years) and take a big step up in performance.

It will be fun if these guys can play! Otherwise, not so much.

I think our new G and Tolbert can play, and I think Noah Brown is going to surprise a lot of fans with his improvement.

I wish we would have invested in a better C though, AND I hope we go after Suh. Not to confident with LVE starting, either. He did play well vs SF in the playoffs though.
Many fans are saying Suh is washed up! How many of our D tackles had 6 sacks and stop the run like him? NONE!!!

As far as the center spot is concerned, I think Lindstrom would do well there, once he gains experience. In he meantime, we'll see what we get with whomever wins that spot. I think Tyler Biadasz will likely have to do in the early going this year. What occurs later might remain a mystery until then.

I think many of us aren't confident that Stephen will see fit to anti up with the expense to be had with Suh. I don't see it in the cards.

I expect TC to be fun from the aspect of the new talents being offered by the youngsters from last year and those from the draft. ;)

Whether we'll be able to win with them in TC and the regular season is a story for another day and the regular season to determine.

After all, we've been lucky to have so many rookie free agents get signed and seemingly capable of offering some promising talent.

The breakout star this season - if there even is one- is overwhelmingly most likely to be someone who was on the roster last year. Micah Parsons' are rare.

Other than Parsons, last year's class was very underwhelming. I think Cox has the most upside and will get the most opportunity. This defense is counting on him to be a key contributor this season.
