Hey, cut the man some slack, he once started 5 G's in a playoff game and won.

Any HC in the league would have concerns at that LT going into this season. It's not if but when with Big Smitty.

I guess he gets credit for admitting the mistake but who couldn't see this coming? We had fans on this board saying just leave him at LG to start and then worry about cross training at OT later, down the road.

The silliness of this franchise is amazing. You had a clear hole at LG. You drafted a kid to fill that hole since you signed ZERO OGs in FA. Put the kid at LG and just let him get settled there before you start thinking about training him to play for Tyron Smith. It's not that hard, people.
Was McCarthy a proponent of flexing players on the OLine while coaching the Packers?

Except you know that Smith is going to miss time and we don't have an athletic backup there. I can understand checking him out in OTAs at LT to see how much work he is going to need. Clearly, he is going to need work since they are now sticking with him at LG, so we shouldn't count on him to backup Smith year 1.

Cavanaugh says he followed up on this MM pc. MM said they are looking for discipline and cadence out of Tyler FWIW.
Maybe they should just draft a player out of Army then.

Very true Couch, but go find a LT and bring him in rather than strip your LG position to fill it. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.
We need a strong presence at LG.

Exactly right.

He has no business at LT this season, at all.

I'm glad he figured it out and made the change early in camp as opposed to the 3rd or 4th preseason game. Also give him respect for admitting it. I'm not the biggest McCarthy fan but he impressed me by admitting a mistake and correcting it. I'm glad someone in the organization is willing to do that.

At least MM discovered that Tyler Smith wasn't ready to contribute at LT at an early stage of his rookie year. From the sound of it, he realized his mistake and ultimately decided to allow Tyler to concentrate at LG from now on.

Now that Tyler is at LG, he's competing with McGovern, who has already shown he struggles to handle it there. It seems likely that it's mostly a matter of time before Tyler Smith takes charge of the open spot at LG. His #1 draft selection speaks to that idea.

In the meantime, it seems productive that Tyler has someone to compete with. Heated competition will normally bring out the best in a developing young player. Tyler will have the remainder of camp and the preseason games to develop a workable technique at LG. Here's hoping he'll do just that.

MM being critical of himself is humbling at least. Stinks to hear it but at least he’s willing to say he needs to do better with a real time situation. This approach is vastly different than Garrett’s

:hammer:

MM is a little slow on uptake. Unfortunate but at least he got there.

Garrett would not have got there.

Fine with playing both positions in the spring, you want to get a feel for what a player can and cannot do.
