The Dallas Cowboys have quite the storied history. I thought it would be fun to look at some facts about our favorite team’s history and it’s record by decade:
  • Cowboys regular season record by decade:
    • 1960s: 57-45-4 (.558)
    • 1970s: 105-37 (.739)
    • 1980s: 79-73 (.519)
    • 1990s: 101-59 (.631)
    • 2000-09: 82-78 (.512)
    • 2010-19: 86-74 (.537)
    • 2020-21: (so far) 18-15 (.545)
  • Cowboys playoff record by decade:
    • 1960s: 1-4
    • 1970s: 14-7
    • 1980s: 5-5
    • 1990s: 12-5
    • 2000-09: 1-4
    • 2010-19: 2-4
    • 2020-21: 0-1
Home Playoff wins: 26
Road Playoff Wins: 9 (Have not had one in 29 years!)

  • Cowboys road playoff wins in 60s: 0
  • Cowboys road playoff wins in the 70s: 6
  • Cowboys road playoff wins in the 80s: 1
  • Cowboys road playoff wins in the 90s: 2
  • Cowboys road playoff wins since 2000: 0
  • Last playoff road win- Jan 19,1993 in the NFC championship game vs SF!
Was fun looking at how the team has done over the years. Puts the current playoff drought in perspective.

Those numbers show that the 70's Dallas teams were greater than the 90's Dallas teams.

To further the point, in the 70' there were six franchises that could win the SB, Dallas, Minnesota, Los Angeles, Miami, Pittsburgh, and Oakland. All super teams. In the 90' there was just Dallas and San Francisco. They were the only super teams(maybe Buffalo) and that's it.

The 70' will always be the greatest period in Dallas history.

Those 70s teams had so many road playoff games because the Rams and Vikings had a cakewalk over their divisions most years.

If my memory is correct, the Cowboys lost more playoff games to the Rams at home than on the road, that decade.

Yet the Steelers are considered the team of the 70's.

four superbowls will do that. if dallas would have beaten the steelers in both superbowls then cowboys would be the team of the seventies.

When someone says things like this player or team will always be the best you know they are just emotionally fan boying.

The 90's Cowboys were the team of the decade. The 70's Cowboys were the little brother to the Steelers.

3-9 in the playoffs since 2000 explains the fan funk.

In the three previous decades, the worst they had was .500, 5-5, and that included 3 NFC Champs game losses in the 80's.

It is interesting that the owner stated he wanted to be relevant at the end of the season, not contending.

There was a time when those Superbowl or bust fans had reason to feel that way but that time passed long ago.

If a bullfrog had a shotgun up his butt, he wouldn't be afraid of snakes.

The fact that they faced the Steelers twice and lost sealed the deal. That 70's team was a great team but still second to PIT.

I'm still more annoyed about losing SB V to the Colts.

Those Steelers teams were loaded. That Colts team was worse than the one who lost to the Jets two years earlier.

The 3-9 numbers in the playoffs and the seeming satisfaction with just “being relevant” is what drives me crazy. With no apparent plan or desire to make changes at the top.

Those of us in the Dallas-FW metroplex have watched the Rangers owner fire their manager and also their long time GM for a lack of results and even the Mavs owner got rid of their long time GM and their HC last year. The Cowboys owner would never consider those kind of changes. Just be “relevant”.

Yeah, as much as I hate to do it, that Steelers team in the 70's was my best ever. Incredible balance from O to D and between the run and pass, no weaknesses.

Nepotism rules the Cowboys.

Fans just see records, but they don't take into account the competition.

In the 70's for Dallas to win the SB they had to get through what would be considered San Francisco type competition through the two rounds of the playoffs and then meet another super team in the SB, equivalent to playing San Francisco three times to win a championship. The only reason that Dallas wasn't the team of the 70's was two losses to Pittsburgh. If Dallas wins just one those games they are the team of the 70's.
