Brandon Smith and Malik Davis were better choices then Houston and Dowdle

Davis is a keeper IMO. Don't know if he's better than Rico but he is good enough to make this team. I thought they'd go 4 deep if they plan to use a true 2 back system as they claim.

Smith, sorry but IMO, no way he should make it over Houston.

Good point . Jalen Tolbert should look much better with a new pitcher in the game . Brandon Smith caught every mediocre pass thrown to him in pre season .
I like Brandon Smith, but his game is basically poor man's Dez Bryant or rich man's Jesse Holley. He's a big target against zone defenses and can win jump balls in man coverage but he's not a route runner than can work himself open. Not exactly a Dak type receiver.

Did you witness that toe drag TD catch by Smith in the Seattle game . It left Michael Irvin in the booth speechless and that’s impossible . He’s an NFL receiver if not Dallas I hope not in the NFCE .

sorry, that did bring a chuckle , what exactly is Dak type of receiver , please? WRs who show consistently 5 yard separation from DBs , only then he will let the ball go ? LOL.

In my opinion he is too self doubting himself ( may be after the calf injury ) and to avoid interceptions will not throw deeper balls to WR unless they can show lot of separation.

Guys that actually can get open against man defenses being where they are suppose to be on the called route. Not making the qb throw a 50/50 ball every time they are against man coverage.

Love the fact we kept 6 LB’s. If Clark can make it back with the neck deal that’s 7. This team needed it as Barr and LVE have had injuries in the past and Cox is coming off the ACL.

Hope Barr can last until Clark is ready to take over.

what exactly is Dak type of receiver? A wide reciever that makes a hard catch look easy and makes Dak look like an elite quarterback.

Of the 54 players on the team (including Reserve/NFI list LB Damone Clark), only 8 players are veteran free agents signed by the Cowboys:

  1. signed 03/22/2021 – DE Tarell Basham, VFA (2017 3rd round pick of Colts
  2. signed 03/30/2021 – S Jayron Kearse, VFA (2016 7th round pick of Vikings)
  3. signed 04/07/2021 – P Bryan Anger, VFA (2012 3rd round pick of Jaguars)
  4. signed 07/27/2021 – S Malik Hooker, VFA (2017 1st round pick of Colts)
  5. signed 03/08/2022 – DE Dante Fowler, Jr., VFA (2015 1st round pick of Jaguars)
  6. signed 03/18/2022 – WR James Washington, VFA (2018 2nd round pick of Steelers
  7. signed 07/27/2022 – WR Kavontae Turpin, VFA (2020 UDFA of FCL League)
  8. signed 08/03/2022 – LB Anthony Barr, VFA (2014 1st round pick of Vikings
All 8 of these players were signed in the last 18 months. 6 of them are former 1st, 2nd or 3rd round picks, and one was last year's USFL MVP.

The other 46 players on the roster were either drafted by the Cowboys or were signed directly by the Cowboys as undrafted college free agents (40 draft picks, and 6 college free agents). I remember back in the mid-oughts when Bill Parcells and Wade Phillips were the head coaches, and right up until about 2012 under Jason Garrett. The entire fan board loudly complained about poor drafting, and wasting money on free agents.

Now people complain because the Jones family and the Cowboys prefer home-grown players.

Edit: Only 17 players remain from the Jason Garrett era. In the last 3 preseasons, McCarthy has brought on 37 new players.

Can't believe Ridgeway made the 53.
We have a lot of defensive linemen.

That’s Jerry making up for not getting Quinn his defensive tackle he wanted in the higher rounds. ‘ I’ll make it up to you buddy, you can keep a hell of a lot of defensive linemen!’ ;)

They're heavy on defense (27 D vs 23 O).

I'm slightly surprised by Basham.

I like Basham's effort. Despite not being very athletic, it looks like he tries very hard. And that's the thing that helps him. At least it was when I did my imaginary roster.

Joseph should be ready for game 1 if he has a simple concussion.

Yeah, but I think the thing with Joseph has more to do with Goodell and Jerry beefing, and Jerry was probably advised to work the out of sight out of mind for all the NFL busy bodies.

I like the move. Makes sense given what he's been through, etc.

I came on here to mention how many of these guys were draft picks/UDFA’s.

I do want Dallas to be a little more active in VFA… but man are they drafting well. How they were doing FA in the early 2000’s (spending a lot in VFA) just isn’t the way to go.

The drafting well part is what makes me sad about the free agency part. It really wouldn't take that much work in free agency to put us over the top IMO because we are drafting well. Poor drafting teams try to win with free agency and have the same problem ... it's very hard, if not impossible, to climb to the top with one arm tied behind your back.

Sadly, we used to be one of those poor drafting teams who spent big money in FA, trying to win that way, and it didn't work out well for us, either.
