I know a lot of people are down on Austin, and for good reason, but bringing him in at or near the veteran minimum if he is healthy would probably be a wise decision depending on how Street develops.

I see the Street draft choice as a strong one. Not necessarily because he is going to see the field a lot, but to rebalance our receiving corps. He might find himself inactive the entire season, but that wouldn't be a bad thing.

I'm a huge fan of Cole Beasley, I expect him to have a really big year this year, and Dwayne Harris is another great slot option. That being said, these two are clear slot guys, and aren't well suited to be the #2 receiver.

What this kid gives us is the ability to develop an outside guy behind Bryant and Williams. If either of them are injured, this kid will have to step up immediately.

That's also a scary thought. If there is an injury it would be smart to bring in Austin if he is still available and healthy. He knows the offense and when truly healthy, he can be productive. I don't know if I'd want to instantly depend on Street as the next man up.

This would be our current receiver corps

1. Dez Bryant
2. Terrance Williams
3. Cole Beasley
4. Dwayne Harris
5. Devin Street

I think Austin will probably find work before we need him, but hamstring injuries or not, he gives us good depth.

We're still a 2 TE team, so I'd expect Devin Street never to be active for a single game assuming everyone stays healthy.

The problem is that Austin hasn't been healthy. Thus it sets us back trying to find a possible replacement throughout the year. I like Austin but if he is replaced with someone that can give close to Laurant Robinson performance, I'd be happy with that.

If you analyze this draft carefully, they took what went wrong with 2013 and tried to figure out ways not to replicate it in 2014. This draft seems to be based on on insurance rather than need. So if Austin gets injured we have a viable replacement for him. The same goes for that linebacker we selected in the 3rd round.

but it is the most important function of a DE in the 4-3 and with the exception of one year he never was more than average. You can get a run stopper and a 6 sack guy a lot cheaper then spencer ever cost.

The double digit sack year was under the first of two tags. Before that when he was getting 6 sacks or the like he was on his rookie salary for being the 26th pick. The only time he was paid a large amount and did nothing was last year when he was hurt.

He isn't getting paid jack now so hopefully he repays some of that debt so to speak.

If we were to bring Austin back, I would only do it after the first game of the year, if he was available. I don't want to be on the hook for his salary all year when he gets hurt again.

As for Austin, with two starters already entrenched, Austin represents a progress stopper. Harris and Beasley have never been given a shot outside and if Street is a prospect they like which i think they do then he won't see the field if Austin is around.

I would rather give Beasely and especially Harris a look as he scores TDs or give the more prototypically sized Streets a shot. Nothing is sure in life but the better cases scenarios are with the youth.

i am not sure that Austin will ever be able to play balls to wall ever again like he used to with his hamstrings.

I would just move on from Austin. Let the young guys get playing time and be allowed to develop.

Exactly. I'd much rather let the young guys develop. We're far from one receiver away, so we need to invest in the future and let these young guys get those reps.

He already runs their routes so they think he will assimilate quickly because of that.
This is Romo, from the year after Robinson left:

“Laurent did a good job of … if it was a 12-yard curl route, he’d hit 12 yards and turn,” Romo said. “You don’t have to win by three yards every time. … Sometimes receivers will want to give the extra moves here and there and in some systems they allow you the freedom to do a lot of stuff. My thing is that our timing is pretty good as an offensive unit that you just need to be where you need to be on time. If you’re covered, you’re covered and I’ll move through to the next guy. If you’re not, then you’re not. But you can’t be places late. And that’s really what we preach as an offensive system and I think Laurent did a good job of that."

It's my impression that that's the kind of guy they think they're getting in Street. We'll see.

It's time to move on from Miles Austin. He should have his agent call the Browns and help bring along Johnathan Manziel.

Agree the ship has sailed on Austin even though I always liked him (except for his Khardashian phase). The thing with Street I think will surprise people this year is his ability to get deep. He doesn't have burner speed but he looks to have the ability to get deep and catch the ball in traffic. I think he will surprise some people this year on deep routes.

Seems like a no brainer.

Look I liked Austin at one time. What you pay is one factor, but the other one is a roster spot. Do we hold a roster spot for this guy? I just think it is time to move on. Dallas gave him chances to turn it around. He's just never been the same explosive player from the past.

Thanks for the reminder about Austin. The Street pick makes real sense now, reading your post, and the insurance policy of a " if healthy Austin" is intriguing

anyone, anyone who catches the ball, if he catches the ball and runs, replaced, moving on. Miles showed us all, he cant be counted on. OKay fair enough, hes replaced. No need to rehash or make a case for him, no point in spending money for him to collect and pull more hammys. Sports is also mental and Autins isnt physical or mentally prepped for the game. Another person has been put in his place.

IRVING, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys believe they drafted a third-round prospect despite trading their third-round pick.

They consider selecting Pittsburgh receiver Devin Street in the fifth round a steal.

Street had a third-round grade on the Cowboys’ board, which is why they packaged their fifth-round pick (No. 158) and a seventh-rounder (No. 229) to move up a dozen spots and draft him with the 146th overall pick.

The Cowboys see the 6-foot-3, 189-pound Street, who holds Pitt’s career receptions record with 202, as a pro-ready receiver. He’s expected to immediately compete for the No. 3 receiver role and gives the Cowboys a legitimate option as an outside receiver if Dez Bryantor Terrance Williams gets injured.

“Very, very accomplished route runner, great hands, great length,” Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “If anything, needs to work on some of the strength a little bit. Other than that, he’s played in a [pro-style] system, he knows the route tree. It will be easy for him coming in.”

Hè is definitely his guy, the conversation they had during the call after he was picked was like they were old friends, they both sound really excited to be working together so I'd be a little surprised if he was inactive for the year. Street raved about Dooley and vice versa.

Barring an injury, there is no room on the 53 for another WR. Street will have to struggle in camp for them to consider adding a WR. Street has essentially taken Austin's spot on the 53.

Well..

Sort of what they did with Spencer?

Gives him an incentive deal like Melton got.

Austin and Romo are good together.

But they both have to actually play.

A whole season without injury.

Miles was the no. 1 but couldn't stay healthy so he was replaced with Dez. As the no. 2 he couldn't stay healthy so he was replaced by Williams. As a no. 3 he couldn't stay healthy so he is replaced by the no. 3, 4, and 5th receivers collectively. I realize he had a rapport with Romo but the only way the younger guys get that is by playing.
