Florio - "Cowboys commence putting the screws to Dez Bryant"

Per Florio:

"... This is why, Rapoport explains, the Cowboys offered Bryant a 10-year, $114 million deal, with only $20 million guaranteed.
But the Cowboys used a similar, ultra-long-term structure with left tackle Tyron Smith. And rumors have persisted for months that Jones hoped to persuade Bryant, through direct negotiations, to make a similar commitment that, given the non-guaranteed nature of NFL deals, ends up being a one-way street with no way out for the player.

Now, it appears the Cowboys have opted for hardball, launching a P.R. attack against Bryant and in turn making potential suitors think twice about pursuing Bryant, who would be far better off forcing the Cowboys to use the franchise tag on a year-to-year basis than accepting a deal that gives him some security up front but ties him to the team for as long as the team chooses to keep him...."

What a reach. The Cowboys had nothing to do with Rapaport's report about arrests. As a matter of fact, Rapaport did something he rarely does - he revealed his source on that story.

He called the police department and asked.

really dirtbag-ish if true. Guy has been one of the few players to suit up week in and week out since coming in the league. If you wanna be cheap and not pay him what he deserves then let him walk and get his.

He says that multiple sources told him that some off-field stuff had them leary of a long-term deal, and THEN he called the police department.

Whatever, I'm just glad Dallas (Jerry) is thinking harder and negotiating with more prudence than before. Dez is not a perfect player. He requires extra attention and consideration that others don't, and that has to be taken into consideration.

They'll get a deal done, but it needs to provide protections in case Dez wanders off the reservation again.

But as reporters go, there are few I detest more than Rappaport, and that doesn't change regardless. He's such wannabe, it's pathetic. I trust Mortensen far more.

when its all said and done, dez will get signed and it will be around 11 to 12 mil a year would be my gues. not top money but good money and i think dez see's that the real money comes from endorcements and dallas is the spot he will get the most money for that

We fans want Dez to remain a Cowboy. I think Dez wants to remain a Cowboy even more than the fans. Dez wants to continue to wear that #88 and wants his name in the Ring of Honor.

A deal will be done. Just a matter of time. And I think Dez gives the Cowboys a little hometown discount because a) he wants a ring and b) he is friends with many other players and will leave a little money for them.

florio and rappoport are the least trustworthy rumor mongers in the NFL.

the dez "incidents" are all a year old or MORE and none of them are anything remotely detailing a fear factor for behavior.

there is nothing wrong with dallas making that offer to dez as a first offer.
a couple tweaks and it will be about right.

offering someone 100 million can be below market but it is never insulting.

lol

Wait. We haven't even made the playoffs in any year Dez has been here and were about a year or two from having to start over with a new QB (with no prospects on the roster) but you think Dez will stay here "because he wants to win a Super Bowl?"

What a pile of horse ****!

The organization finally starts to show some restraint and not throw piles of money at the player and assume all the risk and that's called "putting the screws" to Bryant?

I'd call that good business, keep it up boyz!

And Dez, if you end up bound to that 10 year contract and are able to complete it, you're going to be a very rich man and probably a legend in Dallas as well

His statement was reaching but yours is equally so.

Dallas is right now 7-3 and has the pieces for a run.
We have no idea that Romo has only a year or two left. Romo is 34, Brady 37, Manning 38.
Elite QBs are hard to come by so those guys can make 15M plus to play til they are 40.

I agree and hope we do. Still with what I said being true, I wouldn't use 'wanting to win a SB' as a reason Dez would give us a discount.

Works both ways. Dez is positioning for big bucks too. He admitted that and talked about his "brand". He separates himself after he scores from team celebration so he can work through his signs.

It's all business. Both sides are maneuvering.

There is no poor victim athlete vs big bad ownership. Those days are long gone.
