Too Tall was my first Cowboys hero.
I never have been able to meet him....sure have wanted to tho.
I did receive an autographed photo from him in the mail.
It took almost 2 full-seasons worth of letters but it finally came.

I was blessed as a kid to have gotten so many responses

I met Emmitt when I brought my painting to his autograph session. Asked to shake his hand and he refused, then I look over, and Too Tall is posing for pictures with his arms around people. Here I spent about 50 hours painting a picture of Emmitt, drove 2 and a half hours to pay about $100 for his autograph, and he wouldn't even shake my hand.

A couple years later I met Jay Novacek at an autograph session, with a Sports Illustrated picture of him, and he reached out to shake my hand before I even asked.

Emmitt isn't quite the guy I expected, but still a great Cowboy.

You should go online and look for places where Too Tall will be signing autographs. He seems very personable.

I met Darren Woodson twice boarding flights between DFW and BDL the past few years, the second time on the way to his ROH induction. Hell of a nice guy. I can see how he was a LB in college - big framed dude, looked like he could still play.

That’s too bad about Emmitt! I also met Novacek and he was really nice.

Met your buddy Randy White at Canton in 1994 when he got inducted... he talked to us(my Dad and 2 brothers) for 10 minutes..... we are from Maryland and live on the Eastern Shore near where he was from in Delaware....... great guy.........kept kidding my Dad that he looked like a good friend of his that he would hunt with...... he signed footballs, pictures and hats.....

Franco Harris blew us off........ we were 30 out of 31 people waiting for an auto and he stopped at 29

Met Larry Allen at the Stadium during one of the draft parties. I saw him leaving and went up and asked for his autograph...except i didn't have a pen or paper, so he took a picture with me. Nice guy. Big. Man of few words. Likes his baggy white t shirts. Came across as a very genuine, humble guy.

You should talk to people in Dallas involved with fund raisers. Emmitt would have shaken your hand if there had been money in it.

So, I need to tell my Roger story. I know, I know, the folks from the other site have heard it too many times but the folks here haven't been blessed with it.

In 1980, we started a new company and rented office space from Roger's company and this was his first commercial real estate venture and I'd like to think we were partially responsible for his success because we paid our rent. One night they had a welcome cocktail party for all of the tenants in all 3 buildings and I've been known to welcome a cocktail on occasion so I went and upon arriving saw Roger with Cliff Harris and walked right up and shook their hands and told Cliff I was a born and bred Arky and told Roger I had been in the Navy and neither seemed to really care. Nah, they were very friendly.

Later on, I had the chance to briefly talk to Roger and told him he was my son's favorite player and he asked me what his name was and I told him and didn't think anything about it. I slammed down a couple of vodkas and deep throated some pigs in a blanket, gagged and thought it was time to head on home.

The next morning the receptionist called me and said someone was up front and wanted to see me. I checked to see if it was the authorities, it wasn't, and I headed up front. When I got there, this lady handed me an envelope and on the outside it read Private: Paternity Test. Nah, it didn't. There wasn't anything on the outside of the envelope, so I knew it was addressed to me. Inside was a freshly signed pic of the Roger with a note to my son, Josh. It read: Josh, really sorry this man is your father...Roger. Nah, it was a really nice note to my 8 year old son.

The point is he remembered and I wasn't anybody special, except to my son for getting him a Roger pic and autograph. He didn't have a name keeper with him and remembered that from a brief conversation. No need to tell you our favorite QB of all time.

Only got to meet Tony Dorsett, but met him twice. He has been the Chairman of the Apple Blossom Parade in Winchester VA for 3 different years I believe. I was part of the honor band to start the parade for 7 years. So while doing our thing practicing before the parade starts and knowing he is the 3rd attraction seen in the parade, I managed to get his autograph and talk to him back when I was 14yrs old and again when I was 17yrs old. A very down to earth guy that has tons of wild stories when he was growing up. So much so, I got in trouble trying to hear them all and was late getting back to start.... LOL In fact my mother still has pictures of us talking and another of him waving in the parade route.....

That's a great story, Coach. There is a great piece on Staubach, I think from "A Football Life", that shares his early life as an NFL QB on the Cowboys, and how he would hunker down in his apartment, responding to all the mail he received from fans. He finally had to get an assistant to handle the fan mail because of the amount of time he would invest in his personal responses.

They don't make em like that anymore.

Jay Novacek at an autograph session in San Antonio in 2003.
Very friendly and looked like he was ready to go to a rodeo.
One day during a layover at Miami International Airport I saw Roger Staubach browsing through a magazine stand.
So people went over to him and he signed stuff for him.I left him alone.that was in '95 or '96.
