The bullish case for Scott Linehan

The Atlanta game is a microcosm of Linehan’s biggest flaw.
The man has zero ability to make in-game adjustments.
Every fan of the Cowboys that has ever played high school football; coached pee-wee football; hell, just watched a few football games in their life were screaming at their TV screens to give Green some help with a TE to stop the madness. But what does this clown do?He just kept leaving Green out there on an island to get beat while Dak was getting pummeled.
Seriously, what kind of clueless moron does that???
And forget about half-time adjustments. Did anyone.....ANYONE see any adjustments based on the opposing team’s defense all year long?
It absolutely boggles my mind, for all of JJ’s genius at making insane amounts of money, how many tens of millions he has flushed down the toilet on incompetent moronic coaches over the last 22 years.
His biggest weakness is maybe just stubbornness. Who didn’t see green was over matched? Who didn’t see you have to run at least once when you have 1st and goal inside the 5
Lots of things contributed to last year but the OC was a big part of it himself

Call it whatever you like, but the 2015 Cowboys were doomed with Weeden and Cassel playing QB. 4-12, 6-10, who cares?
I agree. They played very bad. But when you have an inferior QB you have to call the game differently and we didn’t change much
I agree he didn’t have much to work with but you have to figure out what they can do and do that

Linehan is awesome. We should have enlisted a QB guru in 2015 to come in and fix Weeden and Cassel. I read on here that's what we need to do for Dak........... *chuckles*...I bet they could fix their accuracy problems, I don't think they had any of the "glitch".

I'd put him in a half nelson and make him promise not to ignore Zeke down by the goal line.

I agree somewhat. He’s not as bad as some think but he also doesn’t adjust well at all. Green was getting killed in Atlanta and he never gave him any help.
True on this--that was a huge-head scratcher and coaching failure to not adjust.

Beasley for the most part runs one route the majority of the time.
Not really. Beas has been effective within the scheme to demand double coverage. If you can get that from your slot guy you've got to count on your other weapons to produce. But Dez is a mess and Witten is slow. We need upgrades.

We need a bit more creativity in the passing game no matter who the play caller is.
I'd like to see us add some wrinkles, but I can't see giving Linehan a grade less than B-. He gets an A for some of his previous seasons.

Following the 2012 season, Jerry decided that Garrett being HC, OC and play-caller was too much, so Bill Callahan was named the OC/play-caller for 2013; after which Garrett was allowed to choose his own OC.

JG then selected Linehan (2014), since he and Scott were supposedly on the same page (read: the lessor of evils, since Garrett didn’t want to relinquish play-calling in the first place).

Linehan is here mostly because of Jones’ demands on how Garrett should run his staff.

You guys are only down on Linehan because Dez and Witten are so bad.

No matter how bad anyone thinks Linehan is he is a markedly better play-caller than Jason Garrett.

So Linehan will go when Jason does.
Probably true
Hopefully they get the hint that both have their job on the line and some changes are needed

They aren't going to change.
I know that frustrates people but it is what it is.
The old school timing based offense was plenty good in 2016 and even in 2017 when the OL was healthy.

I absolutely detest the offense but it is better than what we had when JG was calling plays.
At least Linehan has a few curveballs.

I hope they win it all next year and Linehan gets a head job elsewhere.

This forum has become a swirling pool of silliness and this thread yet another baseless rant.

2014, 7th in yards, 5th in points
2016, 5th in yards, 5th in points
2017, 14th in yards, 14th in points

2015 got torpedoed w/Romo's back injury. Summary? 3 years of above average performance and two seasons in the top five of scoring. Doesn't sound remotely like a failed tenure to me.

Fans keep ranting and repeating the same stuff. Doesn't make it true.

Could we add a few wrinkles to the offense? Sure. The biggest improvement will come not through scheme but from more speedy playmakers.

Take it from someone who's been watching the Cowboys since the mid-60s, this is the Cowboys fans way. Has been, is now, and will be. It may be that way in every NFL city.

No Zeke..and qb in a sophomore slump..managed to win 9 games. Eh, I'll give him a pass. I'd like our chances against any of these championship teams outside of NE
Weird season in that they looked like the browns in some games and a playoff team in others

yep the whole offensive line [one guy] was hurt and everybody on the defense [one guy] was hurt. The coaches and receivers forgot how to coach and play. Zeke didn't get to play too.. It was all Fredrick's fault, he touches the ball the most.. lmao

I totally disagree Chip.

I've been active on message boards for 15 years plus.

This forum now resembles an Eagles board of hateful, loser fans who spew nonsense.
It wasn't always like that.
We always had some specific player to hate or heated arguments about the draft but we din;t have post after meaningless post about bad we sucked after going 9-7, that's for darn sure.

The mood was more upbeat after 3 straight 5-11 seasons than it is right now. Fans of other teams used to post here as opposed to their own boards because the hatefulness on their threads was too much.
Here we spent the bulk of the thread actually analyzing things. We may have been wrong or lacking many facts but we weren't just a bunch of miserable people.
That's a recent phenomenon.

I think the guy is a terrible offensive coordinator. 2 out of the last 3 years have been complete failures. His offense has no tempo, no aggression, no imagination, no flexibility. How he survived 2015 where he showed zero ability to adjust is amazing.

Can someone please explain to me what Jerry sees in him? Thanks.
No clue.

Interesting. I'm new to the board, any Cowboys board for that matter, but what I read here is no different than what I've heard on talk radio for the last 2+ decades, although I do have to say it's at a new level here. There are many folks on here that do make logical and fact based assertions, but it seems the vast majority are simply personal insults and derisiveness. Thank you for being a voice of reason.

23 years can do that to a fan base. I was more upbeat when Dave Campo was coach too. Figured it would be short lived and I was right. One of the happiest days I had was when Jerry hired Bill Parcells. Enjoyed most of his stay here but it went south in a hurry after he left. One failed season after another with below average coaches.

I wrote for an NFL site back then and called hiring Parcells Christmas for Cowboys fans.

I don't think its the 23 years. I think it's the nature of people online now. Everything is snark and emotional outpouring.
9-7 in year 2 with Dak?
4 years ago we were robbed in round 2 of the playoffs by the worst catch ruling I've ever seen.
3 years ago we lost Romo and trotted out dog meat at QB.
2 years ago we found Dak and ground out 13 wins before losing on a last minute Aaron Rodgers drive.
This year we lost DLaw 4 games, Irving 7.5 games, Tyron ~5, Sean Lee ~6, Zeke 6. Chido ~6 games ... I mean come on. 9-7 ain't that bad losing all that game time to your best players.
