Archer: For Vita Vea to make sense, Cowboys might have to do some convincing

Maybe (and maybe just wishful thinking) but maybe the coaches started warming up to the idea of a true 1 tech toward the end of the year. After all Richard Ash (6'3 333) and Daniel Ross (6'4 325) were getting some PT. If you're gonna use a big boy might as well have one with real talent like Vea.

You watch.....as our coaches finally realize the need and WANTS to draft the best 1 tech, he will get plucked with the pick right before us. Just our luck.

I think it is just plain sad that a defensive coordinator has that much say on who is drafted.

But I cannot visualize any other DC in the entire league that basically can veto an entire player type all by himself.

That is simply a bad organizational practice as you are beholden to that coach and his system more than simply taking quality players. Once he is gone, you may be stuck with a customized group of players that a new coach will be asking to change out.

I cannot think of any defense Vea could not help. He is not your typical space eating blob.

Best interior DT of his kind since Ngata.
That's what you get when the gm doesn't have a plan for the team.

Seriously.......... screw Marinelli.

Stop listening to that over the hill geezer and pick the best player there and if it's a Vea or Payne, two run stuffing DTs, then ******* do it Jerry, you freaking knob head.

Tell us how you really feel .lol:muttley:

I'm glad a lot of cowboy fans are coming around to vea:flagwave:

Here's how the conversation should go:

Jerry - Rod, we are going to take Vea at 19.

Rod - Who the hell is that?

Jerry - He's the big fat kid with long hair from Washington. He's a DT and can stop the run. He's Samoan or from Fiji or Jamaica.

Rod - I don't like it. We don't need a guy like that in our defense.

Jerry - Your defense has been mediocre, so zip it and I will take whomever I like.

The conversation will actually go like this:

Jerry - Rod, we may draft the DT from Washington at 19.

Rod - I don't need him. I have a guy from West Texas Christian Bible School I like better. I forbid drafting Vea.

Jerry - OK.

HahH you got me with "He's Somoan or from Fiji or Jamaica"

Here is the thing, I thought Jerry was the GM, I thought Jerry was responsible for purchasing the groceries. Why the hell does Marinelli have this much of a say in who plays on the DL? His scheme might not like it but guys like Vita Vea who are that big, that strong and can move with that speed are aberrations and should not be evaluated with the same lense of your broke *** bend but don't break scheme.

I dont think its RodM scheme that doesnt want a Vea type talent...........He looks at the position as a place not too spend a big chunk of salary cap, If a dominate DT were to develop or fall in his lap, he be as happy as a lark.

This follows the pattern set by J.Johnson, he had positions, and he told us so, position that he saved salary cap on.....he still wanted certain traits in those players, but he wouldnt likely pay the 2nd contract....

Wasn't one of the selling points of McClay that he improved the communication between coaches and scouts? That he got everyone on the same page? That alone would tell you coaches do influence the draft picks. They are communicating what kinds of players they need to work within their scheme. Otherwise there'd be no reason to communicate. Let the scouts handle everything.

I envision draft week as a total free for all where Jerry and Stephen basically role the die on draft day and make the pick after everyone else screams at them who to take.

Because as much as he tells us, Jerry is not a football guy. So he has no real "plan". Moreso than most GMs, he has to rely on what people tell him and unfortunately, I think he tends to listen to his coaches, specifically Garrett and Marinelli, moreso than his scouts, etc. It carries over to FA as well IMO.

So that's how you get no real investment in DTs, because Marinelli says he doesn't need it.

Okay then what are guys like Will McClay doing? Shouldn't they be saying otherwise? Heck where is Garrett in all this?

Garrett, most likely, supports Marinelli and what he thinks he needs. I don't think Garrett necessarily has a clue what to do on the defensive side of the ball.

In the end, it doesn't matter. Dysfunction rules and that is directly related to Jerry Jones. They are haphazard in how they make decisions, they have no clear "plan", etc.

Right but then you got an even bigger mess on your hands. Forcing players on a coordinator that doesn't want them.

What's he gonna do? Retire?

He's got one foot out the door already, and Eberflus could have dropped the banana peel.

I'm not screwing around with my draft based on the input of this short-timer. His previous input got us Melton, Hayden, Paea, and a string of disappointments and never-was like Joey Ivey. He's forfeited his spot at the table. Don't like it coach? Here's your gold watch.

I think Vea could step in tomorrow at the 3 and be the most dominant DT in football. He is that good.
