There really is no significant benefit either way over the course of the game. The potential first half benefit of receiving is that you have a chance to score 1st, and then if things fall right you may have the last possession of the half as well, giving you more possessions. Of course in the second half that same benefit goes to the other team.

I’m not convinced it really matters
Having more processions increases you chances of scoring but many things have a bigger impact on the number of processions you get from turnovers to quick scores
Most teams do defer but just not convinced it really matters
In 16 we had a fine season and took the kick off every time
Lots of things much more important in a game that actually gives you a better chance to win
But some swear it matters and since we deferred last week and played well I suspect it becomes a trend this year

It’s not receiving, in and of itself, I have a problem with. It’s that we ALWAYS received as if the coaches never gave it any strategic thought whatsoever based upon opponent, weather, sun direction, etc. Just a one size fits all approach by the coach.

I've always been a fan of Deferring... Defense is usually pumped to start the game and when QBs are excited they then to throw high. Advantage to the D to start, however if you get scored on to start this can be a bad thing.

Statistically, the difference is almost zero.

Over the past five seasons, home teams have won 56.27 percent of the time. They have won 56.32 percent of the time when kicking off to start the game and 56.22 percent of the time when receiving to start the game.

Thus, road teams have won 43.73 percent of the time -- 43.78 percent when they kick off to start the game and 43.68 percent when they receive to start the game.

So, deferring and kicking off to start the game makes you 0.1 percent more likely to win.

But I still prefer it.

You have better odds of winning the toss than the game. I read a story where some mathematician calculated the odds of winning the flip and you have about a one pct better chance of winning the flip if you call the side facing up
Some poor grad students must have spent the day flipping coins lol

IIRC Garrett would defer prior to 2014 and then the running game took off and he wanted to apply pressure to the opposing defense right away
