Crazy fact that solidifies my belief on mediocrity

I read this morning on NBC sports a fact that surprised me and I could not believe was true, and it turns out to be very true.

In the last 23 years, every single team in the NFC has played in the NFC Championship Game except Washington, Detroit and Dallas.

For me, that just solidifies what I already knew about how mediocre this franchise really is. We haven't even come close to the championship game and I don't see that changing.

Oakland and Arizona have played in SBs this century.

Unless you have worked in a family run business, you will find that no matter how right you may be, if you are an outsider it is difficult to help make any real change, The Jones have complete control of how everything is done and they will feel they are the only voice that matters. Hence keeping an under-performing coach many years too long. Most GM's that had to be held accountable would have cut him loose long ago. But Jerry can do as he wants as he has no real accountability within the organization. Change only occurs when the fans stop coming and the media stop discussing his team.

The Jones and the Cowboys are in a rather unique situation. There are few other pro sports franchises that can print money like the Cowboys can despite 25 years of mediocrity.

Drove right by the Cowboys merchandise distribution center yesterday and outlet store.
Never for a second I thought I should stop to even look at any merchandise.

Matter of fact, I thought of pulling an Earl Thomas on them, as he rode off in the cart. But there were cars by me, they may have thought I was doing that to them. :laugh:

Jerry is a savvy businessman and it's highly unlikely he would put up with the type of underperformance from employees in his non-NFL business dealings, but finds it perfectly acceptable with this team.

And despite that, there are people on this board that will tell you that Jerry is a fantastic owner and done a great job in the stewardship of this franchise.

If that surprises you, you'll probably be shocked to find out that those other teams have played in at least 2 NFCCGs in that time.

Here is another fact that is demoralizing. Since Aikman retired in 2000 the Cowboys have won only 2 playoffs games. 24 teams have more playoff wins. ESPN was killing the Cowboys last night.

What has he done to make this a successful franchise on the field? He hires one coach that brings success and people treat him like he's the next best thing since the switch from magazines to toilet paper?

Its a big switch for this franchise. When I was growing up, being a super bowl contender seemed like a birthright. Even in Landry's worst years toward the end, you had the sense it was just a temporary blip. Now, there is just no end to the mediocrity in sight. The losing mentality has become institutionalized in the front office of this franchise. It permeates the entire organization.

They are like the Toronto Maple Leafs or Montreal Canadiens.
Can suck forever, with the lore of the stanley cups/superbowls in the past, yet people still go to the games/buy **** no matter how bad they are.

The culture sucks around the team and has for years, there is no real accountability (Ty Montgomery would likley have been coddled here after the fumble) and the face of your franchise is the owner/GM........I don't blame anybody for tuning out anymore, the team is being sabotaged and the guilty party doesn't even know they are doing it.

You are absolutely correct. Maybe it is just nostalgia but I remember thinking as a kid that it didn't matter how much we were behind, Danny White and the offense could always pull off a win. Two huge comebacks versus Washington and the Saints are the wins I remember the most. Too bad those Cowboys choked in three straight NFC Championships.
